I was recruited to play baseball on the east coast. My dad and I took a tour of a few other schools in New England we decided to drive up into the Boston area from Long Island. I was gassed so I feel asleep for an hour while he drove. When I woke up, this song was playing while we drove through Providence in Rhode Island. I had never felt so at peace. There was nothing to say and we just sat and drove through the town on a beautiful sunny day during the summer. I'll always remember that feeling of serenity and genuine happiness. It was a really cool moment with my Dad and I'll remember it for the rest of my life. Thanks Greg.

Hang on...186,000 (341,000 now) are VIEWS. Not people. Some people like me, have viewed this 20 or 30 times. So, if 1,000 people view this 10 times each, that's only 10,000 views. So you can't really rely on those numbers. Also, how in the world, can you possibly make a statement like "nobody's heard of him"? Who's "nobody"? Are you implying that you know EVERYONE, and somehow KNOW what they know or DON'T know? For god's sake man. I bought all his music as well, but sometimes I don't have access to wifi so I use a desktop and listen to his stuff 2 or 3 times in the same day! See what I'm gettin at...

My favorite lines: "Churches and trains They all look the same to me now They shoot you some place While we ache to come home somehow" ^^ exactly what I was thinking while listening to this song almost non-stop on a train from Landscheid, Germany to Amsterdam in January of this year. Definitely. To me it signifies that discovering truth and meaning in our existence is tricky. Some turn to travel to reinvent themselves or discover something in themselves and the same can be said about religion but we’re often still left with a longing that these things promise to fulfill.

I love this song. I live in Amsterdam, near a windmill, and this song really touches me-especially because at the beginning, you can actually see the windmill. To me, this song represents feeling protected and safe because of Amsterdam. It feels like the song is sung from the perspective of the city itself, not a man. So the line 'she follows me down every street' makes me think of how I follow Amsterdam through every street. I’ve truly become myself in this city, and I literally found myself here. That’s why the line 'in Amsterdam she flies' resonates with me so deeply! The song even brought me to tears when I was on my way to view a new house, just outside of Amsterdam. It felt as if I was leaving a part of myself behind. But no matter where I go, I carry the city with me-it will always be in my heart.

I heard this song for the first time 5 years ago, I remember when I was traveling with my family crossing Europe in a camper. I'm scared but fear has never done good things, this song gives me courage what I need to really do it.

One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life, and a very wonderful video to accompany it. It makes me think of waking up to a beautiful morning next to a the most beautiful woman I know, my wife, and how much she's gone through with me, how much she's carried me. Imagine waking up in a new country, traveling the entire world with her. Seeing, hearing, tasting, experiencing new things we have never done before. Sharing the love we have with only each other as the sun sets over Amsterdam. The look in her eyes as we head to rest from the long adventurous day, and how she seems so worn and tired with her make up washed away, but still more beautiful than the Moon herself now full-bellied and bright through the window. Feeling like i'm about to cry of joy every time before I kiss her, and finally falling asleep tangled in each others arms. Greg takes me there with this song, even though im still waiting to meet the girl of my dreams. I will find her someday. I know this. Because no matter how many times churches and trains take me away from my grief temporarily, nothing will compare to coming back home to rest in the bed with the one woman I love. Thank you Greg.

Having visited Amsterdam a handful of times now, coincidentally starting a long-distance relationship with a Dutch girl just a week before the US travel ban started in March 2020, and then later playing this song in several concert halls (always giving the man credit) I can say this song makes me feel incredibly grateful to be alive at the same time as Greg... The waltzing feel of this tune and the piano will always resonate with me.

Song explanation 💕 from Genius On “Amsterdam,” Gregory Alan Isakov personifies the Netherlands' capital as a lover. Isakov is a self-proclaimed traveler, so the song may be based on his personal experiences with the city. However, he never revealed the song’s true meaning, not even to Laura Goldhamer who directed the stop-motion music video in close collaboration with him. She told Esquire the video, which took over a month to finish, was created at Isakov’s farm-yet she “never once asked Greg, ‘What is this song about?’” I know why songwriters never explain the meaning of their songs. I love that it’s open to interpretation

This song makes me feel like a kid again…I don’t know another way to describe it, but it transports me to being 6 years old playing in the grass and flowers with my older sister, a feeling of peace. Being to young to worry about things, not having a care in the world, only caring about what toy I got to play with, or if mom made spaghetti for dinner. We weren’t 19 and 21, we were young and naive, not knowing what the world held for us.

Honestly, there is so much more to The Netherlands than just Amsterdam! If you have the possibility to visit other cities or even regions in The Netherlands, don't hesitate to go there to!

Discovered this song from "Girls", while I was watching I fell asleep and the show played for hours, I was gently woken out of a deep sleep by the beauty of this song, and of course it made me cry. So beautiful, so thankful to be able to hear this.
