I don't know how many of you remember, but in this scene, the characters are actually practicing martial arts moves in order for them to escape. Because fighting would have gotten them imprisoned, they choreographed a dance in order to practice. Watch the kicks, sweeps and hand movements. Brilliant.

You have an African American tap dancer with incredible rhythm who took his art to a new level. You have a Russian ballet dancer, one of the most highly trained and disciplined of all time. Two masters of their craft, both very different styles, and they find a way to make them compliment each other in a short masterpiece. The use of karate and the kick for kick is brilliant, they did more in a three step kumite than Van Damme did in his whole career of ballet inspired karate.

Perfection! As someone who took YEARS of ballet growing up and was mildly obsessed with Baryshnikov, I can also appreciate Hines! It's the juxtaposition of the two... Mikhail, so precise and graceful and Gregory Hines with the jazzy relaxed moves. They compliment one another. It's not about Baryshnikov being "better." They are two VERY different styles of dancers, which mesh perfectly together! One of my all time favorites!

Yeah, but Barishnikov was better.

It’s also the brilliance of Twyla Tharp who found a way to put them together, using their strengths. This film has great showcases for the things they each do best. There Le jeune homme et la mort, and that incredible Russian Folk song for Baryshnikov, andBoat that’s leavin soon and the biographical improv for Hines . Then there is tge workout piece and this. Beautiful balance.

Incredible display of grace, precision and athleticism byMisha and Hines. I'm blown away equally by the cinematography! That camera man caught some absolutely incredible angles which made the performance even more dynamic. Sometimes when we watch a great film with an all star cast, we forget about HOW it's filmed a great cameraman can make or break a film.
@vinvass26749 жыл бұрын
Agreed they way the camera moved to properly capture this was remarkable and made it possible to watch the whole thing with the best view. One of the criticisms of some films like Xanadu is that the camera was too low at eye level and didn't look down on the dancers and use the correct angles. This means you can't see how many people are behind the leads and it creates a blurred, muddy effect.

It was a cold war film at the time the cold war was over, but two great dancers agreed. Gregory was a good friend of mine and nervous at the time about going to Russia. He and "Barry" became good friends after the movie wa made

a good ballet dancer knows where every muscle in his body is and what it is doing at every moment. No extra movements -- as someone said, precision. Hines is more relaxed and free. both great.

Gregory Hines is so gangsta, and Baryshnikov has this amazing centre of gravity - he just manages to stay so upright - who's got the watchable quality? I reckon that's why I've watched the movie more than twice.

I'd have loved to watch Baryshnikov and Patrick Swayze together.
@ammasophia46634 жыл бұрын
Swayze was trained in ballet, so the difference of style would not have been as profound, in my opinion. Part of Hines delivery can be seen in the slightly hunched shoulders and looseness in the body. Swayze, would not have brought that sharp contrast to our eyes.

I only wish I could ever dance that perfect! Both are wonderfully talented dancing the same choreography but with their own styles..
@AngelaCelesteMay5 жыл бұрын
One thing I always notice is how their respective dance backgrounds/training is evident in the way they hold their upper bodies: Hines is often more bent at he waist in classic tap dance mode as the concentration is on the action of the feet and this feeling of being grounded, and Baryshnikov is upright as ballet is all about pulling up.
@TheStaceyAdamz11 жыл бұрын
I love the mixture of their styles. Both are amazing dancers and their moves are so similar yet different. you can tell that Baryshnikov is a classically trained ballet dancer because of how fluid some movements are. The same goes for Gregory Hines. So sad we don't have legends like this anymore.

You can see how Baryshinikov has so much command over his movements that he can imitate jazz, modern and anything else that Hines does. But Hines has the body posture and ease of dance that does not include imitation. Both are excellent and this comparison is fascinating!

I got to see Hines in Vegas in the mid-80s, in one of those places where you sit at tables instead of theater-type seats. My seat was RIGHT next to the stage; I literally could rest my elbows on it & Hines was within about 3 feet. He was utterly mesmerizing; I knew from seeing him on film that he was an incredible dancer & actor & babe, but in person....holy moly! The electricity & charisma poured off him in near-visible waves, and the way he moved was almost superhuman. We're both lucky he didn't end up slipping in the big puddle of my drool. OTOH, I coulda leaped up onto the stage, saved & comforted him, & had his everlasting gratitude. Ah, dreams.
