In 1989, Gregory Hines created "Gregory Hines' Tap Dance in America," which he also hosted. The PBS "Guest Performances" special featured the most seasoned tap dancers of the time, and showed a rare insight into the "Masters" of tap dance, who helped shape tap dance into the art form that it has become.

A wonderful spectacular exhibition of the incredible skills of the beautiful art of tap. It has blown me away. Gregory was an inspiration with the Masters of tap and the entire cast. Young Savion has taken forward the next generation to maintain the beauty of the art. Loved every joyous moment. God bless Gregory (gone too soon, his work was not yet finished) together with Hinton Battle, Sandman Sims, Jimmy Slyde, Honi Coles, Buster Brown. RIP the greatest

I didn't believe when l got word of Gregory's passing. I ran to the phone, called my school, Broadway Dance Center. The recording stated classes were cancelled in Gregory's honor. I then put the TV on. There it was! Tears just rolled down in unbelief & in pain. I had felt something way before, something was wrong when he didn't come by the school. I asked my instructor Barbara Duffy. She replied, "you know him, always doing movies." I accepted that. It made sense. Yet, as time moved on & there was still no sign of him entering our class, nor no signs of him around the school, l immediately knew something was wrong. Hoping l was wrong, l still told Barbara. She looked at me. Later, l gave her a card. I informed her my being charasmatic from a young age l had certain gifts. That there may be a possibility we may see him around the school. That it's nothing to be alarmed about. It's a sign he's still with us. After l gave her the card, that following week, we began our warm up, when suddenly the door opened slightly a little. Just as Gregory used to do, then slowly & quietly enter catching up to our class and join us. l knew it was Gregory's spirit. Barbara looked at me amazed, and as our eyes met, l could tell she recalled what l had told her. When l watched the unveiling of the stamp in Gregory's honor on TV. the speech Maurice gave was just so touching! I could feel his emotion he still feels, missing his brother though a few years passed, those feelings haven't changed. The love for each other is still there. That's really beautiful. I admire you both for that. Plus, having his daughter Daria, your niece, stand right beside you, giving you moral support, as you shared with us, your emotions, l could hear the tears inside your voice. It's natural to feel this way. It's me & l along with others, still feel this way. Yet as l told Barbara, l'm telling you, "don't be alarmed if you see Gregory around for a second. lt's natural." The main thing is you both remained close. I wish my sister was like that. After we lost Mom of cancer, the controversy of Mom's will and bills she left me with, caused me to discontinue at Broadway Dance. Believe it or not, but your brother came 2x to me in a dream on not giving up. He stated my mother requested he was the only one to convince me. That the controversy my sister & niece were causing, she was too ashamed to talk to me. That if anyone could convince me on not giving up dance, it was him, Gregory. I even asked why he left all of us. He said, he had no control of that. That he just got special permissions upon Mom's requst to speak to me. Maurice, l didn't want to go into all of this, but l felt this was/is the only way you can understand where I'm coming from. Please take care of yourself. My prayers remain with you. Pray that l may return to Barbara's class & I can keep on tapping, just like l promised your brother Gregory.

I knew Greg for well over a year. Oversaw his dinner service at the former Factor's Find (23rd and 10th) while he started in Sophisticated Ladies on Broadway. So generous to everyone who worked at the restaurant, and even invited his favorite line cook (not the Chef) to the show, and invited him and his family backstage afterwards. A class act all the way! Anyone who hasn't seen him and Barishnikov dance head to head in White Nights has missed a tap and ballet classic!

Savion took it to another level. I've seen his show on Bway 2 times and was blown away each time I got goosebumps! Damn, I'd give anything just to be in the back of the room with all those great Tap Dancers. I'd be so quiet they would never know I was there.

Guess you never saw Greg and Baryshnikov in White Nights. Or saw Greg live. Davion is great, often mentored by Greg, but Savion's only brought it maybe to Greg Hines's level.

@@karendouglas9027 Yes, I saw both White Nights and Tap in the movies, and I own TAP on DVD. News flash Gregory Hines and Savion can both be great dancers, one being great; don't take anything from the other. "Savion took tap to another level"! You know who said that? Gregory Hines, Sandman! If you saw Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk, you would say the same! I've also met Gregory Hines in a store I used to work in Manhatten in the 1990s and sold him a pair of sneakers for his son.

(lol) I might be the only person that remembers Gregg Burge from the kid cast of the PBS educational show "The Electric Company" along with Irene Cara. Now movie star, Morgan Freeman, back then was "Easy Reader" on the show. I saw Hinton Battle play the Scarecrow in "The Wiz" on Broadway. I also remember Gregory Hines' club act with his brother Maurice & father called Hines & Hines & Dad. Johnny Carson used to book them on "The Tonight Show" a lot. May Gregory & Gregg forever Rest in Paradise.

RIP, Mr. Hines, but he wasn't great. His posture for a dancer was not acceptable, bent over with shoulders hunched up. Seeing the Masters of Tap was great, but this younger generation seems like they would rather show off than keep totally true to the dance.
@averagejane09
@averagejane09 4 жыл бұрын
Right. Best never to change or celebrate anything different lest you be accused of showing off and not being true. Gregory Hines was a very acceptable dancer and maybe his style wasn't your favorite but he was clearly very accomplished and respected by all the masters who showed up for his show. He clearly loved the dance and revered the masters that came before him. You can see it in how he interacts with them. But, just like music, fashion or any other thing in this world, each generation puts their own unique stamp on things, which is lovely and how this world keeps spinning and progressing, and some old farts just don't like change and like clockwork poo poo the young.
