His wonderful laid back style has never been surpassed

I wish God didn't call Gregory home so soon. Gregory still had so much to give to his students & fans. Something he enjoyed. Something he looked forward in doing. He loved encouraging us. His generosity alone, to come by our school, to take time to teach and encourage us, is something we cherished.Even today, l'm sure those of us whom he taught, he left a trademark in our life. With me, he touched not only my heart, but my life. I still cannot imagine not seeing him around, stopping by at Broadway Dance Center. Hearing the door, seeing it slightly open to our class, seeing him enter quietly then catching up to Barbara's combination, tapping along as Barbara Duffy continued to teach, and Gregory joining us. Then taking over. Loosing him is like loosing family. Though l know Gregory's spirit is still with all of us, loosing someone is always hard. Loosing Gregory was like loosing Richard Elmer, Frank Hatchett and Chuck Kelly all in one all over. Still up to this day, it's up to all of us to keep their legend alive, by keeping them in our prayers.

Love this! Thanks for posting this. Miss him so much! He touched my heart by believing in me. I will always be grateful to God when he came around by surprise then entered our class ( Barbara Duffy's) and teach us. I loved that Barbara continued to tap along with us! Thanks Barbara!

Yes, Gregory Hines was a master at manipulating sounds and silence, to create his irresistible rhythms. I had the chance to make a dance in his honor, in 2002 at the Gypsy Awards Show in Los Angeles. He was grateful, humble, and honest. What a great man!

@@bboross I just saw your reply. Looked you up and wish I had a home with a floor and a mirrored wall so I could follow your video instruction. You make it look tryable. Why don't you post the tribute performance you did?

There's a viral video going around fb of a very talented young lady tapping to a video game song. Demi something or other. I was kind of turned off by the clip, because of the loud music in the background. She had me, but the music ruined it. I googled Mr. Hines, because I remembered he didn't need music to hold the audience's attention. He only need the floor he stood on. Thanks for the upload. This man was a national treasure.

Hi Amy, thanks for your comment. Yes, I've always loved Gregory's jazz timing, and making rhythms by using silence between taps as much as with the tap sounds (unlike you know who). I was so fortunate to make a dance for the Gypsy Awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in 2002, to a version of Cool by Dave Grusin. Gregory was one of the honorees, and he sought me out after the show to compliment me on the dance - what a great guy!

Look for "Cool from West Side Story" in the Musical Theatre playlist on my channel to see it.

Bob Boross Wow! Very cool, Bob! Thanks for sharing your experience! I guess that’s where I get my “silent spaces” in tap. I have a tap poetry piece on my channel that resonates this style. Blessings, Bob! 🙌🙏✌️👏🏻

Yes, and what a great transitional dancer from the old masters to the newer speed demon tappers like Savion. Gregory knew how to use silence between taps, matched with an infectious and surprising syncopation, that just pulled the viewer IN to the tap dance, rather than just impressing with speed (i.e. Savion) and therefore keeping the viewer at a distance. He was very gracious, too. I choreographed my version of Cool from WSS (there's a video on my channel) in 2002, for the Gypsy Awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. He was an honoree, along with June Haver. Well, Gregory sought me out after the performance/show to tell me how impressed he was with my choreography. What a great guy - gone much too early.
