SPOILERS I always saw Judgement Boy as being metaphor for indecisiveness towards yourself and having others make decisions for you, especially later on when Judgement Boy gold is introduced and he says 'you're walking your own path for the very first time' this is also the one time he drops the gold instead of the heart, representing that 'the guest' has started thinking for himself and facing the path ahead. TLDR In a nutshell he wants the guest to think for himself and not have others make the choices for him

To add on, I like to think that the reason why Judgement boy always presents a question, though always disregarded the following answer, is because he always to a decision made in the past that was already made, or had a similar event that ended with similar results, this is especially prominent in Volume 2 when he's pressing the main character about her ex-boyfriend. The protagonist can *say* that they will do what they think at that moment is the right thing, but the decision was already made, "and they get to live with it".

Is it fair for Judgment Boy to say you'd chose money over love without your say? No. But decisions never are fair, are they? Even if you decide love above all else, as long as the doubt exists inside you, your heart will feel the weight, and it will only be a matter of time before it shatters and sways. You could say you have no doubt, but I doubt anyone in Gregory House can say while being completely honest with themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised how many people would go with the one they love in this only to feel better about themselves and make themselves look like a good person to others. This isn't saying that there aren't any people in this world that would genuinely go visit the one they love who was hurt over signing a contract that might net them more money.
@crystalore10 жыл бұрын
Well, if I didn't go to the hospital to visit my GF if she got hit by a car, I would go there anyway..hint hint.
@PrincesTomboy10 жыл бұрын
It's funny how most of the comments missed the point about how humans lie about their real answer... by lying about their real answer. I personally would probably have asked that Judgment Boy be more specific, since we don't know how much money or how bad a car accident. Sounds like she'd die before you got all the way there, anyway, signing a contract would only have taken a few more minutes... From the way he frames it, before your pick your options are "change your life with all of the money!" and "hang out a little more with the girlfriend who will probably be fine either way I mean no one in fiction ever dies from getting hit by a car", and after you pick both options turned out to involve "your love interest is dead, by the way." As much as I love the character, he's really just throwing false dichotomies at you so he can complain about human nature. This guy is just the grown up version of that "would you rather eat a bug or eat dirt" game they play in preschool! Except after you pick bugs, he calls you a liar and an insect-racist for secretly picking dirt.
@PyroGothNerd10 жыл бұрын
The idea behind it is that when faced with these hypothetical questions, people pick what seems to be right, but when faced with the real thing, they might not do what they say they would do. For example, there have been many cases of people just watching as people are beat up or worse, and not just Kitty Genovese. There was an incident in China where a little girl got run over by two trucks, and no one tried to help her for ages. There was also the Milgram experiment (psychology.about.com/od/historyofpsychology/a/milgram.htm), where it was shown that many people have trouble resisting authority, and some of them even began to enjoy doing what they thought was inflicting pain because they were told they would not be held responsible. He points out that even if you say you would do one thing, in the real life situation, you might not do what you thought you would do in that situation. He is designed to mess with your mind and make you question yourself. Personally, I hate hypothetical questions like that, because I know what I say I would do might not actually be what I would do. It's even worse when it's one where you can only save one person, or you have to choose the lesser of two evils, and stuff like that. Although there are some that are really badly thought out, like, there was one I heard that went like this: "You are being led through a cave by the ocean by a fat guy. When he leads you out, he gets stuck in the hole, and you are all trapped, and the cave begins filling with water. Luckily, someone brought a stick of dynamite (What the heck?) but using it would kill the fat man. However, if you don't use it to blow up the fat man, everyone else will drown, except the fat man, whose head it sticking out of the cave. Do you kill the fat man, or let everyone else drown?" It's still a somewhat troubling question, but there's too many ridiculous elements to take seriously. On the other hand, there are many troubling hypothetical questions similar to this. For example, there was one where your boat was sinking while you were with your two kids, and you only had time to save one. One was a 5 year old, and the other was an infant. That one scared the crap out of me, because I felt guilty either way.

What the people in the comment section don't seem to get is what the choice actually is. The key word isn't *dies* it's *alone* . She was going to die either way but with the choice to take the contract first the love of your life doesn't even get the honor of having you by her side as she passes away. Overly sentimental? Sure. @WaspCameraInSpringfield8 жыл бұрын
+SleonHikari Unless we're also a brilliant medical professional in this hypothetical scenario (which isn't specified by Judgment Boy), why would our presence at the hospital significantly improve our girlfriend's chances of living? Judgment Boy doesn't specify that she's close to death when he sets the scenario up, and really, how long would signing this contract honestly take? Because, again, the way he sets things up, we can take it as leave that signing the contract will benefit us financially, which will go towards treatment for the girlfriend (or *would have* done if she wasn't at death's door, which again is not specified by JB). And of course, the whole scenario is totally arbitrary anyway if Orangeskin McMoralhighhorse is going to just declare "Nuh-uh, YOU'D ACTUALLY TAKE THE BAD CHOICE!" regardless of what we say. This is a really dumb character.

Or will you succumb to it and abandon reality? What are you going to do? I say we should consult the balance of truth. JUDGEMENT! NOW! You have chosen the madness over the mediocrity. Then Judgement Boy says the character picked the contract and is a huge jerk about it, even though moments later made it clear we were going to the hospital. Judgment boy calls you out on hesitation, or lack of resolve, later on it's revealed that only an iron-clad devotion to your choice can beat judgment boy.

the character SAYS he'll go to the hospital, but Judgement Boy's scales basically work by predicting what you'd ACTUALLY do in that situation (unless IT ACTUALLU HAPPENED OH NO), and shows you that no, you're just saying that cause you wanna look good, but in reality youd choose your job over spending time with a loved one for the final time. Judgement Boy judges you and forces you to face the actions of your decisions, be they real or hypothetical...but rather than kill you or anything, he punishes you by making you face the weight of your own decision, forcing you to face the truth of what you would've done. It was your choice, and you get to live with it.

It took a while to accept that this is an anime, but then I noticed that in the intro, when the doors open up before the name of the show appears, it reminded me of Detective Conan, or case closed for some of you. Just a little tid bit.
@OdaSwifteye5 жыл бұрын
It's an anime in that it's an animation made by a Japanese person in Japan but the art style the show used for the majority of projects is fairly unique and doesn't fit anywhere per se. I'm sure this is what the conclusion you came to but for the record, Anime should never be defined by its art style. Any nationality can duplicate the style and such styles were based on foreign works anyways. If you aren't using it to define animation made in Japan there's no point having the definition to begin with.

I don't know, man! She was going to die anyway, so the narrator would've been heartbroken AND jobless. I wouldn't feel bad if I were the one in the hospital, they've got a life ahead of them and it'd be selfish to throw that off for a few hours of comfort!

So you didn't say that she would definitely die so wouldn't her family be able to stay with her until I'm done signing the contract. It would benefit her if she survived and you didn't say she would die so I need more info to make that kind of decision.

Spoilers because the series wont tell you this information: Judgement boy doesn't make up scenarios atleast it was retconed to not work that way in the second season judgement boy judges actions of the second guest so what judgement boy said was not a hypothetical scenario more like "Hey remember when you did this" And trying to catch him lying, which he did, so with the information given from the second season, the main character here actually did fucked over his dying girlfriend by going to work.
