Jazz singer Gregory Porter looks like a linebacker -- which makes sense, because that's exactly what he used to be. Although a shoulder injury put an end to that career path, things have worked out pretty well for Porter--his 2010 recording debut, "Water," earned him a Grammy nomination the following year. His sophomore effort is called "Be Good," and he talks about the record and performs some of it live in our studio.

Saw him at Paris' Eurostar station in mid-December. Couldn't say a word in front of him. I wanted to tell him that this is one of my favourite songs, but he's physically massive and impressive. Although I looked stupid, he said "Hi !" Amazing and unexpected Christmas present !!! Great Artist overall.

West Coast radio needs to pick up on this brother. I heard this cut for the first time while driving in the bay area listening to KCSM. It moved me to the point I had to pullover. His voice and phrasing was remarkable. This song was tailored for him and his lyrical style. Be Good is also a great piece.

I would love to listen to the station you mentioned. The only problem is that we don't get it here in Chicago where I live. In fact, there isn't ANY real jazz stations here. We do have what they call "smooth jazz" here but in my opinion, that isn't real jazz. We have a college station here that plays real jazz but it has terrible wattage so that it hardly can be heard by those who don't live near it. The state of jazz radio in my hometown is past pathetic.

What is absolutely terrible is that there isn't a single radio station here in Chicago that is playing this cat's music. This is music that can make better people of those who hear it and truly listen. Instead, we're inundated with "music" that refers to bitches, hos, and gettin' paid by any means necessary. We need music like this that reminds us of Ellington, Hughes, and Gaye. Why should it be that we never hear music like this while being drowned with the dreck that I described earlier?

I could be wrong but it sounds like the piano player screws up the time after his solo. When the singer kicks in again the piano hits a left hand chord a beat too early, ie a bar of 4/4 but then one of 3/4, which everyone else just seems to roll with. I've listened over and over and it doesn't seem right to me.

Tokyo has 150 jazz coffee shops... Japan loves jazz... this alto sax is Yosuke Sato... Sadao Watanabe another more famous alto player... I was there and one coffee shop in Osaka had Oscar Peterson Quartet for 3 weeks, imagine the cost but Japan is prepared to pay... I am in Toronto, famous bass player Neil Swainson plays Feb 9 at small place next to convenience store, seats maybe 100, disgraceful... he travelled the world with George Shearing
