Maybe there is a flaw/problem that's causing these processors to destruct prematurely.
@zushikatetomotoshift15752 жыл бұрын
That is cause when the CPU is overvolted it does that. In mobo bios they set the cpu to overvolt. Many motherboards do that. My 3800X was stock at 1.448v I undervolted it to 1.320v. Undervolt your zen and zen2, Not sure if this applies to zen3.

Chip shortage. The demand is too high for quality/durability check from the factory so the CPU could have been a R3 from binning in normal condition but since we're still in a unusual condition, it may have been quick tested for getting the chip out of the factory to satisfy demand.
@navashen36862 жыл бұрын
From what I've noticed and tested with all stock settings my Ryzen 5 3600 was using 1.45v during certain workloads which is "normal" for these chips, but in gaming scenarios i noticed it used to use 1.45v - 1.5v which is way too high, so i contacted Amd technical team and they basically told me to leave all the settings on auto which was of no help. So i ended up doing my own research on these chips, mostly testing theories on my own system and then i came to a conclusion that the way voltage is applied to these chips in an all core scenario is not correct, so to test this i manually set my load-line to level 3 and used the per ccx mode on my motherboard with the override vcore option. This resulted in better voltage control and better overclocking results. The values achieved using this method: CCX0 @4.5Ghz CCX1 @4.4Ghz core vids @1.3v Vcore @1.326v previous stock values: CCX0 and CCX1 @4.1 - 4.2Ghz core vids light load 1.45v in-game 1.45 - 1.5v prime 95 1.25 - 1.28v in conclusion the stock auto settings causes the chip to be overvolted which can result in degradation and in-time possibly killing the chip. Note: all test were at stock 90A EDC All these results are from personal testing and can vary from one chip to another.
@RaidSoft2 жыл бұрын
A lot of this can probably be blamed on the motherboard manufacturers honestly, they have a tendency to not use AMD's specs for their default or "auto" settings on stuff, a lot of this is to push a bit more performance out of the chip so they show up better in tests etc... It's very scummy behavior because it's not clear at all that you're running outside spec.

Thank you for the work you've been putting in, Greg, I've been learning a lot! My interest in building/diagnosing PCs started when my older brother refused to help me with my PC. It would randomly turn off - like no windows shut-down, it'd just turn off (It had a power on range of anywhere from a few seconds from start-up to an hour after). My first instinct was to clean it. I know now that having my PC on a carpeted floor isn't all too healthy for my PC in the long run, but I had nowhere else to put it. While cleaning it, a pillow feather flew out of the PSU. Not knowing the damage a feather can do to a PSU, I thought it was fixed after it was removed. Obviously, it wasn't fixed. Not knowing what else to do after sorting through a few different options, I took it to Fry's Electronics. I told the employee about my PC and how it'd randomly turn off. As soon as the words, "feather in the power supply," left my lips, he gave the slightest s**t eating grin I've ever seen. I had a sneaking suspicion that I needed to replace my PSU and that guy gave me the confirmation I needed. I went home and ordered another PSU. The same PSU but a modular version (I didn't want to deal with stuffing all of the extra, unused, cables next to the drives). It was fixed after that. Again, thanks for your awesome work! I've been able to help friends and family with their PC problems and I am grateful to have someone to keep learning from!

From my own very limited experience it does feel like chips are getting pushed much harder then they used to be and are dying much more often. It's no wonder there's not much to gain from overclocking modern CPUs compared to what we were used to in the past since the manufacturers already push them so close to their limit. During this pandemic, I've been using my PC a lot more (work from home and personal use) and i had my 3700x dying on me. One of my colleges had his 2 month old 12700K die on him a few days ago and is now struggling with the warranty to get a replacement.

Extreme tech did a piece on AMD failure rates last year. A vendor reported DOA rates of around 3% across the board for AMD chips. In comparison, the vendor said they have only seen 1 DOA Intel chip in the entirety of their business history, and it was a 9700k. Power GPU was the company. Harken back to the FX chip days and close to 1/3rd of all chips were DOA.

I tried my best to fix it and was extremally stressed being a full time student and having a salaried position. working 10-11 hour days. I had to scramble and buy a prebuilt, I certainly did not overpay at least. It all worked out as I then took parts from that computer and made a new computer for my Niece. Who is now blown away by the power of a good graphics card, I bought her a 6650 xt and she has no businesses having a card that good. Appreciate what you do and helping others for no cost, now I actually have the knowledge I wish I had at that moment. You will probably enjoy hearing all the things I did and what the issue actually was. I took the GPU out and really cleaned it up, along with the motherboard. I tried running one stick of ram but nothing, turns out I didn't try both ram sticks. I later discovered that one of the ram sticks was broken, and that was the problem. You should have seen me researching how to flash a bios and looking everywhere for the battery only to realize it was behind the GPU and hidden. The GPU, CPU, PSU and board are still good. I may buy a cheap case and ram, throw it together and give it to someone in my family.

It's most likely that the reason for you finding 3600/3600X chips dying more often is just the fact they were the golden value option that basically everyone went for if they were building a system when Ryzen 3000 was current since the price to performance was so good on the 3600 specifically.

Thanks Greg, that was valuable info re: the Bad Ryzen 5, 3600 Series CPU's! Not using one of those in my Next 'Budget Build'!

I had the same case and it had a problem with electric static charges. I could turn the computer on by touching the back of the motherboard with an HDMI lol. And if I just moved the case around on my table sometimes it will power off. But if I put the case on the floor no issues whatsoever. Let's say I got rid of the case

That's just bizarre. I've never seen a bad CPU cause PSUs to power cycle rapidly or have their fans not spin. Very strange.

First gen Ryzen has had issues with a core or two dying. Can usually be saved by disabling them in BIOS. Never had any issues with Zen 2.

It's interesting how this series exposes reliability issues that would otherwise get swept under the rug. The value of this series is incredible.

I moved from a 3600 to a 5800x at the beginning of the year. In the nearly 4 months of use, I've had zero issues with the 5800x on an x570 hero mobo. With some issues I had while using the 3600 on a prime x570 pro, I'm starting to think most were from the cpu rather than mobo, gpu, or monitor. Didn't realize zen 2 had so many issues.

I like that sometimes it can be a mystery issue with similar symptoms to something we've seen 100x's before.

I personally don't think it's a CPU issue I think it has to do with some motherboard revisions. Remember how originally AMD and board partners weren't going to support Gen 1 on Gen 2 boards, then the same with Gen 2 and 3? Most likely because of issues like this. These new Gen Zens pull more power than the previous Gen, to the point where it could fry things on the Mobo and in extreme cases, kill other components. That seems to be what happened here.

Try washing the pins with isopropyl alcohol and a brush. There is probably some oxidation on few of them that's why they don't work after some time. I stumbled upon such issue already but washing the pins fixed it.

Thumbs up, thanks for the vids, AND FOR ADVERTISING Signal RGB, everyone complains about RGB software but no one seems to know about Signal RGB.

Just had to deal with something pretty similar to this last week, my pc just died on me, took 3 days off swapping parts and it had a ryzen 5 3600, with a lot of the same issues

Hey Greg, You always complain you don't have a debug LED on the mobo. You can get PCIE DEBUG cards on one of those Chinese webshops. Never tried it myself. Maybe something to try when troubleshooting?

Really like Signal RGB, also running Fan Control that JaysTwoCents reviewed. I've been able to remove all other RGB and fan control software from the PC. It handles all my devices with one exception which they, I'm sure, will add at some point. These are the solutions I've been looking for.

I have had a problem with the second channel on Ryzen 2700X. One rma, replacement lasted 5 months, same problem. Second 2700x from stock lasted 3 weeks then same fault.32Gb memory, shown in bios, only 16 Gb usable in win 10. Ended up using 16Gb in single channel mode. Not ideal, but on my own system so fine. Broke 3 pins from the outside of cpu but still works fine, this was after the second channel fault(dropped it !) Now on Intel for main system.

umm just food for thought.. have you tried to short the pins of the ryzen CPU.. I remember when I used to have an issue on my old old system (amd duron) and an old AMD A86600k. I just lay it flat on a old power supply (silver ones / china PSU/unpainted PSU) for about 10 secs.. then plug them back to the respective board.. then CMOS reset.. well it might turn back on.. if it does great.. if not well its worth a try.. if you have the time.

I also enjoy your content a lot. Getting in and getting your hands dirty on these computers literally. I'm almost looking forward to my pc failing so I can problem solve it the way you are teaching. Maybe I'll get the chance.... I have a ryzen 5 3600..........

I had this VERY same issue once, I was cleaning my computer “ I always do a deep clean every 3 months “ once I got everything put back together it did this. Turned out to be a memory issue, which was very weird but once replaced it worked fine

No Debug LEDs of any kind? Hopefully those boards at least still have a PC Speaker header? Maybe you could get your hands on one of those PC Speakers and have it to plug in for situations like this one. For as long as I can remember, PCs with speakers have had POST code beep patterns that would indicate if there was a problem and what the problem was. I presume it's still a thing today?

I have had pretty much same/similar issues with my aurus b450 ryzen 5 3600 itx setup, so i really suspected it to be the motherboard during watching this video. But interesting to hear about your experience the ryzen 3600(x) failures, cross my fingers that mine will keep working.

Hey Greg been enjoying your series of Fix or Flop! I just wanted to let ya know that I have a Ryzen 5 3600 since Jun of 2020 i believe so far it's held up! Praying it continues for a few more years lol.

Love the entire series Mr. Salazar, my only correction is that a PC can P.O.S.T. and not have video out. P.O.S.T. is the system Power On Self Test. In most cases a single short 'beep' from the pc speaker indicates a passed P.O.S.T. Higher end systems include a hexadecimal display that will display the post codes. Keep up your fine work.

@Greg Salazar: get yourself a chunk of copper or aluminum, or just a tower cooler without fans, a small one... and place it on top of the CPU for testing :) you dont need the pressure to cool the cpu while in windows. I was even running a sytem for 1 week, incl gaming, with a tower cooler just resting on top of the CPU :)

I had a 3600X / b450-f asus mobo, had a point where my pc was consistently blue screening on load, memory errors when launching apps and when rebooting it would show a black screen with a red CPU light on the mobo. Had no spares to test with so ended up upgrading to a 5800x & x570 asus board. No issues so far a year later

I had a dead 5800X. One day my system would blue screen at the login screen and boot loop until it would eventually just post in safe mode. I did a bunch of troubleshooting and eventually swapping in my old 3600 fixed it. I just got the warranty replacement 5800X yesterday.

i wonder if the power supply 'clicking' or tripping out noise is some kind of build in safety feature on certain spec power supplies.. i had never heard that noise before. great video again! EDIT: and yes, after a quick Google search i found out that the clicking/ticking noise is actually a safety/protection feature in (cross my fingers) most units.
