People in the comments are absurdly negative about the M2. It all depends on your needs. I’m a software engineer and data scientist and the M2 MBA having increased CPU and GPU really suits my needs and the slower/write speed isn’t going to affect me in general. For me, it is worth the upgrade from M1 to M2 in terms of performance. I’ve been using M1 for two years and it’s great for programmers, but for data science the M2 is just an extra boost of power that adds up to it. I personally took 16G memory because 8G is just not enough for me these days. I’m using 256G because I’ve never reached this limit in nearly a decade of coding. Keep in mind that 99% of the reviews are for KZbinrs and video editors. Just weigh the pros and cons with your budget and decide what fits your needs. This M2 is an absolute beast on the market and some people think it’s worth buying it and some people don’t.

Future Greginator is badass! Got my new M2 MacBook Air 16GB/512GB a few days early this past Saturday. It's a beautiful machine with build quality that's superior to any Dell XPS laptops I've owned. Space Grey looks good. I wanted Midnight but the scratch and fingerprint issues chased me away. I don't record/edit/render video so it runs smoothly and cool with Office 2021 apps and streaming video. Feels strange using it after over a year with my M1 iPad Pro 12.9" and magic keyboard. I keep reaching for the Air's screen to touch an icon or scroll through a website. Had no idea how acclimated I became with the iPad's touch screen. Same with the iPad’s Face ID vs. Touch ID on the Air. Face ID easily wins that battle. If I made the decision today, I'd return the Air and stick with my iPad + magic keyboard setup. Gotta give it at least a week, though. Never thought I'd be so comfortable with a tablet. Based on my 3 days of use, Apple is gonna sell a ton of these new Airs.

I recently checked both models of the Air in the Apple Store and clearly, the old M1 Air is nicer to touch and specially to pick up due to it‘s wedge shape that is so thin at the front and almost ideally fits into the hand. Jony Ives understood product design very well. The new one is ok, but the older one was better despite it‘s slightly higher weight.

I don't understand the new Air design, is just like a thinner MacBook Pro and it appears to have higher dimension because of its squarish format. This was the reason and the lack of the notch (I don't mind the 720p camera at all) I just bought the M1 Air today and it is to me, more elegant than the new Air. I love it.

To each their own, but I prefer the look of the M2 Air to the M1 Air. I also think it fits nicer in the hand when carrying it around, whereas the M1 has a sort of sharp feel to it, which isn’t ideal when you are walking around the office carrying it all day.

While the old M1 AIR is nice I have to say the M2 has the better keyboard hands down. It's the same one on the 14" and 16" Pro models. The key travel is much deeper on the M2. The key travel is way too narrow on the M1 AIR. Was going to go with the M1 AIR as a second computer but the M2 keyboard is just better in every which way including the function key size.

@@chanceslaughter3237 The MacBook Pro, either model, is certainly the best bet, because it automatically comes with double the RAM for the base price AND you get three or four external monitors vs ONE with an air, and you get increasingly longer lifespan for components by just having a fan. Heat is what kills computers. And you get the ports. I keep my machines until they are literally too old to function. So for me a machine that is artificially limited to one external monitor and has almost no ports, and no FAN for almost 2000$? Yeah that makes the Air a hard pass for me. You can never get those features back no matter how badly you need them later. It’s not worth buying a pretty machine that gives you half the Ram, a smaller SSD, and in every way is inferior.

We have a 16'' M1 Max MBP 32/1TB, and an M2 MBA 8/512GB (10GPU). I really love the MBA. It's light weight and has better portability. Also, I edit video via FCPX (two to three video per week) and the MBP is a huge time saver. Point is, the 16'' MBP (Portable Workstation Computer) is an amazing computer. It replaced a 15'' 2014 MBP and I'll never look back (it literally takes me 10% of the time to complete some tasks). The M2 MBA (Portable Laptop Computer), is great for our personal use (Coffee shops, shopping, school work, etc.). Two different use-cases. Maybe we could have purchased the 14'' M1 Max MBP for both use-cases; however, I like the 16'' screen when editing video on location. Just my thoughts. Finally, I feel that the 256GB/512GB speed difference is real. If you are considering the two, spring for the 512GB if you can (It's faster and you'll have more space). If you can't, enjoy your amazing laptop. It's one of the best laptops (256GB or 512GB) that you can buy at this time!

Hi Darel. Appreciate your informed feedback. Is the 1TB drive for the M2 MBA as fast as the 512GB?
@DMoneySmooth
@DMoneySmooth 2 жыл бұрын
@@deepsoulfulsounds We have a 1TB MBP and a 512GB MBA. I will say this, the NANDs in the 512GB MBA are fast, really fast; however, those NANDs are about as half as fast as the NANDs in the 1TB MBP. Note though, you don't really recognize the speed difference if you are moving data from online to the computer (You'll be limited by your wifi speed on this, trust me). The only time you might really recognize this difference is if you are playing games that access the drive a lot, or you edit videos using the drive as storage on a regular basis. Even then, the MBA does not appear slow (If this is you, I would recommend a MBP btw). Also, instead of springing for 2TB in the MBP, I built an external NVME 4TB drive (ACASIS TBU401 Enclosure with 4TB Inland Performance Plus NVMe, formatted as exFAT - makes the drive Windows compatible). It is as fast as the internal drive in the MBA (~2200 MB/s writes, ~2700 MB/s reads. MBP has ~6000 MB/s writes & reads btw). Finally, with "sound" being in your name, the MBP speakers are WAY better than the MBA (MBA speakers are good btw, just no low end). The MBP speakers do Dolby ATMOS and reproduction of the lower frequencies, 300hz and below, is amazing! I have a set of Beats that I don't even use to watch movies anymore as I love how the speakers on the MBP perform. Hope this helps!!!

I'm a data engineer and I have the M2 MBA with 24gb ram and 1tb of storage just because I own a Nikon Z9 and I prefer having the previews on the internal drive. The laptop doesn't break a sweat but then again I could still run plenty of complex code on the 10 year old MBP. You can't edit 8k with 1000 USD folks. This is a lightning fast machine but if you want to bash it with multiple 8k streams just keep it real, you need more money for that. I have yet to feel it overheat even when exporting huge raw files to full quality JPEGs or editing huge TIFFs in Photoshop.

I decided to buy the older M1 MacBook Pro that's on sale at BestBuy for $999. There's just too many compromises in the new M2 MacBooks. The SSDs are 1/2 the speed of the previous model (if you get the 256GB model); and the CPUs are missing a heat sink - leading to frequent thermal throttling where it's outperformed by the older M1 chip. Apple should NOT be selling any computer with 256GB SSDs in 2022. It simply ruins the premium experience and pisses off the customers.

But here's the question of balance, if I buy the 1Tb configuration, does it do it in the same way as the 256G Single Slot, do they put in a Single Slot 1Tb SSD?with lower performance? Would I need to buy the 2Tb version to get the performance. I've asked Apple, and the ones I've talked too are clueless. So much for Genius ...

I love my silver M2 MacBook Air with 8 Core GPU, 16GB Ram, 256MB HD! It is far and above, better than any prior MacBook Pro or Air that I’ve owned, going back to my very first clamshell MBP (with card slot and removable battery) from Fall 2008 (with the duel video cards that were never used as Apple claimed they would be)…. There is ZERO 256 SSD speed issue like almost everyone (even you) cried about before it came out. Perhaps I don’t notice as I use 2x 5TB SSD externals. Only downside, just having two USB-C ports (and on same side, silly not having 1 on each side). I’ve not yet, hooked it up with my Thunderbolt Samsung monitor as I’m in Boston and the monitor is at my office in Singapore. Overall, the design of the new Air is superior to all prior designs! The Chip is perfect! Speed is perfect! Fanless is perfect! My top of the line, 13inch, 16GB, Intel Core i7. MacBook Pro from 2018 was so slow, hot and the battery even swelled to the point I couldn’t close the cover, with Apple having to replace it and the case in 2020. The 2022 M2 Air can go on a single charge for over 24hours vs. that i7 Pro only lasting a max of 3-6 hrs. Video renders are lightning fast… There is NO reason, IMO, to upgrade to 512 SSD. I recommend saving money by going with the 8 Core vs. 10 Core and go with 16GB of Ram upgrade over that of the SSD. Why spend the money on the extra Ram? IMO, if like me, who keeps 30+ Safari and 30+ Firefox tabs open, it’s essential… If not, then 8GB would be fine.

16:14 the only shortcoming I can find with the M2 MacBook Air is that it doesn’t come in the same colors as the redesigned iMac. My 11” MacBook Air is starting to hit its limits-lots of modern websites, in particular, really pound on both CPU and RAM, at least for an older machine-so I’m in that gray zone where it wouldn’t be unreasonable to upgrade, but it’s not quite a necessity yet. If I could’ve gotten this with a dark purple outside and a light purple keyboard deck (and I don’t care whether the bezels are black or white), like the purple iMac, I’d be typing on it right now.

Does getting 16GB memory serve the same purpose as adding 512GB SSD ? with 16GB memory, will the swap issue be taken care of ? i dont do heavy workloads at all. I bought the MacBook Pro 13” M2 with the 512GB SSD as i really wanted the Touch Bar as i never had one before - its sexy. I had an original MacBook air back in 2012 and it was fab but i swapped it for a MacBook Pro 2015 which I’ve had now for the last 7 years. I love the design so picking this over the Air, for me, was a no brainier. TBH the pro design has been around now for many years, tried and tested, works perfectly where as this new air design ….. looks nice, but how will it stand up to long term use. I also chose the silver colour so my new MacBook looks just like my old one - minus the light up logo (boo) but this is because the colour is rumoured to chip easily on these new coloured ones along with finger prints which drive me nuts. Plus as much as the new screen looks lovely - the notch man, haway, I thought we were moving away form notches lol - don’t want to be stuck looking at a notch for the next 7 years - its been bad enough over the last 5 years since the iPhone X came out….. Love my macboook pro 13” M2 2022…. Don’t understand why everyone is dissing on this….. tried and tested design why change perfection.
