I am shocked at how well he can transition from extremely high to extremely low notes. Incredible tone on the low tones as well.

I felt the rhythm was there, and was not rushed, I feel this was his interpretation. I know Derek, and one of the finest tuba players I know. This is an 18 minute piece, and he endured better than many pros I have heard do this piece. Great job Derek

I´m enjoying myself so much listening to this! And then you get to the alternate cadenza and play it wonderfully, and so I enjoy it even more. You, sir, are awesome

See brass players. The length of this piece shows why you don't squeeze on high notes.

Wonderful performance. Gentle soft playing. Exact pitch. great musicality of the player. Excellent orchestral accompanyment. Should be made into a commercial disc for the enjoyment of the general public.

Thanks you for this recording! As I am at the moment busy writing a concerto for tuba, is it very interesting to listen to different examples in the genre, beside Vaughan-Williams, of course!

The best tuba concerto version I have ever seen in my life! I have a question - from 4.37 , when you are playing that lovely part, I noticed you are playing a bit different then in the music sheet that i have got (and you version is million times better). Could you please tell me how you play that part because I want to play it just like you (because it sounds awesome).Thanks.

+Tiesiog Simas Its the alternative cadenza. If you have the original, its on the back of the booklet.

You move too much. But that's just my opinion. I know it's to be musical, but when you think about it, is it really helping?
@jadenshort63394 жыл бұрын
I know this was 10 years ago but do you know see why he was moving? It’s not to “be musical” this beautiful piece is so good and he’s having so much playing this that his body just can’t help but move. There is no such thing as moving too much.

Also on tuba cause of the bigger mouthpiece it doesn't really change the embrechure (I can't spell lmao) at all compared to a horn or trumpet, if anything, the movement adds to the performance
