I worked for a movie theater when this came out. We had an employee showing at around 1 am (after all the customers were gone) the night before opening day. When the "film break" part happened, we all thought it was real. All except the manager who read the memo that it happens in the movie and not to think it was a real break. The rest of the management staff started to freak out and were in the process of getting up to sprint to the projection booth to save the film print as the first public showing was in about 9 hours. And then the shadows appeared on screen. A friend of mine sitting next to me laughed so hard he fell out of his seat and was laying on the ground in tears of laughter. This event is definitely in my top 5 best theater viewing moments.

I’ll do you one better. A few years ago my friend and his wife were watching it on DVD and had selected theater version (the DVD gives the option for the TV version where the Gremlins start channel surfing and John Wayne yells at them instead) and when it got to the part where the film melts, she starts freaking out before realizing it’s not only part of the movie, but that being on DVD, there was no way it could start melting and malfunctioning that way. He was hysterical about her reaction before she realized her blunder.

I love this one. It's crazy and I love it's self-aware to make fun of the first movie. I also love that they add another aspect of the supernatural to the Gremlins: reincarnation. According to director Joe Dante, Mohawk in this movie is actually Stripe, the main Gremlin from the first movie reincarnated. That's why he tortures Gizmo. Mohawk remembers Gizmo killing him when he was Stripe.

@TheeGoatPig Daffy, the crazy one, is potentially a reincarnation of the Gremlin that was killed in the blender, which is why he destroys the blender in this movie as revenge and because he was killed head first, his brain is blended up making him nuts. George, the tough one, might be a reincarnation of Haskins, the Gremlin that was killed in the microwave in the first film. Which is why George is cautious of it. And Lenny, the dumbest one, is probably a reincarnation of the plate throwing Gremlin. Mainly because he throws things. Interesting, the original script had Gremlin Lenny switch sides to protect Gizmo from Mohawk and George and push them into an oven, killing them. Which would mean that Lenny would be the first Gremlin to go from being "evil" to good. But he was also an Eternal like Gizmo, a good Mogwai, even in his Gremlin form, and if he was born next to Gizmo, he would have probably teamed with him and not turned into a Gremlin, but instead because he was born next to George, he would follow orders given by George and Mohawk because he was not very smart.

The weird thing about the Hulk Hogan cameo is that he was WWF Champion at the time of filming, but when the film was released, he had lost the title earlier in the year. Also, they did a different version where it looked like the VHS broke, and John Wayne sorted the Gremins out, but people thought that it was an actual issue with the VHS tapes. Originally, the studio wanted to cut the Hulk Hogan cameo, but it was well received by test audiences, so it stayed in. I think you took this as a serious sequel when, in reality, it was a giant middle finger to sequels, which is why it is so different from the first movie. And don't worry, some people didn't like it, but grew to love it.

Greetings Ashleigh Yes, Pheobe Cates was in the first one and the pool scene was in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" 1982. The 'thing' with the badge is the metal version of a barcode, in this case to identify an employee. You should know that Elvira was NOT the first or only person to show and review horror (or another genre) movies. She was just able to go from local to national and be REALLY good at it. As for the movie, it might actually be one of those 'bad horror movie' cult classics. Dr, Catheter is being played by Christopher Lee, actor known for horror films and playing Dracula in several different films. The twin lab assistants are the same ones from Terminator 2 where one plays the security guard and the other is the clone which the T-1000 changes from floor to fake security guard that stabs the first one with the metal liquid long finger, Gizmo and the Gremlins are BOTH puppets and animatronics, depending on the scenes in the movie. Yes, the black and white movie is a real movie. The wearing of the white mask by the Gremlin is a reference to "Phantom of the Opera". Yes, the Gizmo references to "Rambo" and "Rambo 2" are pretty accurate. Part of what makes it a great sequel is that director's freedom to create many different and weird Gremlins. While you caught the jokes and some of the references to other films, the 'disgusting' and 'scary' looks of the different Gremlins that some people enjoy were not to your liking which led to you enjoying this film a whole lot less than the first. Either way you were able to get past the viewing experience. Have a Great Day. Keep being awkward, remarkable, and your adorable self!!😁🤪😇😇😇☺☺☺☺

the film critic who is attacked is Leonard Maltin who actually didn't like the first one, but did for the second. I prefer this one over the first. "IT was nothing like the first one" that is the point. It is self aware and the film is a satire making fun of itself and Joe Dante had complete creative control. It makes fun of media, it makes fun of marketing, it mocks the three rules, it does everything to make sure a good time is had which I waa disappointed to see you didn't. It also predicted the creation of tv channels for cooking, horror, etc. The voice of Brainy Gremlin is Tony Randall who is most famous for The Odd Couple tv series.

Interesting facts for Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) (1) When Gizmo first sees the janitor (John Astin), he says "Gomez", referring to The Addams Family (1964) character made famous by Astin. (2) After Gremlins (1984) became such a surprise success, Warner Bros. immediately wanted a sequel, but director Joe Dante had had enough of Gremlins for a while and declined. Work on this movie proceeded without him, as the studio approached various directors and writers. Storylines considered included sending the gremlins to cities like Las Vegas or even the planet Mars. After these ideas fell through, the studio finally asked Dante again, who agreed on the condition that he be allowed to do anything he wanted. He also received a bigger budget. In the DVD commentaries for Gremlins (1984) and this movie, Dante stated that he felt that this movie was a case of waiting too long to capitalize on the success of Gremlins (1984), which hurt this movie's chances of success. (3) In a corridor of the Clamp Tower, one nameplate says "Vectorscope Labs". This is a reference to the movie Innerspace (1987) also directed by Joe Dante. (4) When Kate arrives at Billy's office looking for Gizmo, she finds mogwai Daffy on the top of the Clamp Tower model playing with some airplane toys located over him. This is an homage to King Kong (1933).

It used stop motion animation to create the creature. Godzilla was released in Japan in 1954. It used a man in a suit on miniature sets. It was released in the US in 1956 as Godzilla King Of The Monsters. It was heavily changed with new scenes with the actor Raymond Burr. TRIVIA 1: CNN has a video in its archive that it's been holding on to for decades should the end of the world be imminent, its staff are instructed to "hold the video for release until the end of the world is confirmed." When the producers of "Gremlins 2" found out about it they added it to the script. TRIVIA 2: When Gizmo sees the janitor he calls him Gomez. This was an inside joke as the janitor was played by John Astin, who played Gomez Addams in the 60s Addams Family TV series.

_Shin Godzilla_ is easily my recommendation if you review some kaiju movies. The story is similar to the original 1954 Godzilla movie with a modern touchup, and it stands on its own. It's my favorite of all the Godzilla films.

Honestly, I think she should start from the beginning, with the original Japanese version of the 1954 film. It's a classic for a good reason.

Aye. I think a large aspect of Shin Godzilla's theme hinges on viewers being familiar with the other films & what's considered "the norm" in this universe

@@kneau EXACTLY. Ashleigh would probably spend half the movie talking about not understanding a bunch of references that she has no experience with, and would probably end up not enjoying it nearly as much as she could, as if she started it from the beginning.

The theater takeover happens differently for several different formats. One was for VHS where they made the tape glitch and did some stuff. In the novelization the Brain Gremlin's name is "Mr. Glasses", and that scene is replaced with him breaking in, taking the author hostage, and taking over the book for a couple of pages.

I think Gremlins 2 is a perfect example of a studio changing the sequel to meet their unintended audience after kids loved Gizmo from the first one. As a kid when this came out, it was the first Gremlins I saw and loved it. The camp and pop culture references were great. I was completely shocked when I finally watched the original.

I think if you want to do another ridiculous horror comedy, I would suggest Leprechaun for when Saint Patrick's Day comes. It's about a vengeful leprechaun that tries to kill people who stole his pot of gold. It stars Warwick Davis who starred in Willow and was Wicket the Ewok in Return of the Jedi. It also stars Jennifer Aniston in her film debut, oddly enough. It's dumb, but in a hilariously fun way.

Apparently when the studio came to the director, Joe Dante (normally a horror/comedy director), with the idea for Gremlins 2 he didn't want to do it, not being sure how to top the original. When the studio insisted he said he'd only do it if he had full control. So he made it outrageously bigger & very meta to get back at the studios & had the freedom to go as creatively crazy he wanted, . You should checkout the Red letter media re:view of it, lots of interesting facts about the film there. Hulk Hogan was very popular at the time so they thought, yeah we'll throw him in there!

This movie gets so much better with age now I am of adult status and get more of the in joke references and the "F@ck It" attitude the director had for this movie when he was coming up with ideas on what he wanted to do this time round.

The film that you thought was Godzilla, was in fact the 1953 classic ‘The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms’. It is indeed worthy of a place on your reactions list. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was one of the early atomic monster movies, and it helped inspire a generation of creature features and directly inspired Godzilla. The film's story concerns a fictional dinosaur, the Rhedosaurus, which is released from its frozen hibernating state by an atomic bomb test in the Arctic Circle. The beast begins to wreak a path of destruction as it travels southward, eventually arriving at its ancient spawning grounds, which includes New York City. The VFX in the film were the work of the legendary Ray Harryhausen. I had the honour of meeting Harryhausen in 2002; he received an honorary doctorate at the same ceremony I was attending for my graduation (I studied film design). The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was the first live-action film to feature a giant monster awakened/brought about by an atomic bomb detonation, preceding Godzilla by 16 months. Another giant monster film worth watch is 1954s Them! which features a nest of irradiated ants in the New Mexico desert.

OH! That scene from "Rambo" wasn't in the first Gremlins movie. I think you might be thinking about that Black & White car racing clip. That clip was from "To Please a Lady", starring Clark Gable. Remember towards the end of the first Gremlins movie when Gizmo was driving around in the store to help Billy? Gizmo raced the car up that shovel, using it as a ramp... jumped out of the race car in mid-air... grabbed the cord (or chain) that opened the window... and then Stripe... who was in the fountain... getting all bubbly and such... got hit by the light (morning sunlight, I think). Stripe then fell back into the fountain... that went all freaky and bubbly...only to pop back up a few minutes later as a juicy, dripping, popping gremlin skeleton. AND THE DAY IS SAVED... THANKS TO THE MIGHTY HEROES!!!! ~ I know... it's strange what I've got up there in what I call that Swiss Cheese Memory of mine. ;p

Someone else mentioned it, but that was Sir Christopher Lee as Dr. catheter. He was Sauraman in Lord of the Rings, Count Dooku in Episode 2 and the start of Episode 3 of Star Wars. A genuine badass of a man. The two other main scientists who are twins were also in Terminator 2 as the mental hospital security guard that gets killed by the T-1000 that looks just like him. Mr. Clamp is a good character actor who has played several roles over the years. The one I remember him best from is playing Lex Luthor’s dad in the Smallville tv series.

I’m sure you’ve heard this already, but the lead scientist is Christopher Lee (count dooku, Saruman) - the twins are actually twins, and they were in Terminator 2 as the guard that got stabbed in the eye by the T-1000…Mr. Clamp is supposed to be a parody of Trump - he was also in Scrooged as Bryce the slimy California producer dude. Also yes, Phoebe Cates was the topless girl at the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So - just some info. 😉

That was not "Godzilla". That was "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", an American monster movie, based on a Ray Bradbury short story, about a huge prehistoric beast, that is released from an icy tomb and wrecks havoc upon the modern world. Pretty much the plot of "Godzilla" but before Godzilla. In fact, "Beast" did so well at the box office, the Japanese film industry took notice and decided to do their own version of it called... you guessed it, "Godzilla". Now if you do watch Godzilla, make sure it's the 1954 version called "Godzilla". They released a version for the American market in 1956 that is best left unmatched. But I would recommend "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" over all. The movie that spawned the modern rampaging monster movie.

*Hi Ashleigh!!!* *Here you go...explanations!* I love both the first movie and this one, and part what I love is how the first one is so earnest and the sequel does a 180 and gets so meta...so cleverly stupid and silly! The logic problems with the rules and a few other things have always nagged me at the back of my mind though. Watching these movies so many times I've come up with some theories on how Gremlins physiology works just for the peace of my own mind... How did Gizmo get to be good when every other mogwai/gremlin is always bad? Now, what I've heard is the official canon is that with mogwai (which translates into "monster" in Chinese) only 1 in 1000 are good hearted like Gizmo when they are born, the rest are mean terrors like the others. I prefer my own theory I came up with... The water that got splashed on Gizmo in the first movie was the dirty water Billy used to rinse his paint brushes. The water was tainted, so the mogwai were too. Then in this movie Gizmo gets splashed _again_ with water contaminated by paint. I always imagine Gizmo was born from a drop of water from a crystal clear mountain stream. The mogwai reproduce asexual. I imagine they do this by holding fertilized eggs outside their body but embedded in their skin. It may only take a drop of water to waken them, but it has to be H2O. This is how you can hydrate them and clean them without causing a baby boom. You could give them milk, alcohol, etc, to drink or bathe them in it and they wouldn't multiply. The water has to be within the right temperature range too, close to normal mogwai body temperature. Even though like snow is frozen H2O it's too cold to awaken the eggs, even if it melts a little. This is why nothing happens when they are in the snow in the first movie. They don't have an infinite amount of eggs either. The older eggs eventually die and drop off like dead skin cells and new eggs are constantly being regenerated by their body metabolism. This is why some parts of their bodies seem to get wet but no new Gremlins pop out...the water just happened to hit an area with no eggs, but the water eventually will find some. So it's also why when Stripe jumped into the pool in the first movie, or in this movie when _George, Lenny,_ and _Daffy _ (the actully names the production crew gave these gremlins) set off the sprinklers, the chain reaction wasn't even bigger, their bodies eventually ran out of viable eggs until they could eat and recharge their systems some. Am I scaring you yet? The eating after midnight thing... This really gave me a headache as a kid until I figured it out to my own satisfaction. The Sun is the weakness of the mogwai. Only sunlight kills them, other light just causes them pain and is hard to tolerate. So, direct sunlight will kill them, but I figured even indirect sunlight has an effect. It keeps them too weak to go into a pupa stage. But at midnight the sun is directly behind the Earth and the mogwai are at their strongest. Then they only need to eat to trigger metamorphosis. They hold onto this strength past midnight, it takes the sun rising, turning night back to day, to weaken them enough to be safe to feed them again. So no matter where they are in the world, the no feeding after midnight rule will still apply only to the midnight of the time zone they are in. I know I put too much thought into this, but it's how my brain works... Best Regards!
