I had one like that when I was 5 years old. It had this spring loaded mechanism with a ratchet timer and you could put a paper cap into it which would go "bang" upon release. I also had a realistic replica of a German Luger, which would fire rolls of caps too! For my toy soldiers, I had some miniature cannons - field artillery models. These were either loaded with tiny firecrackers or with the stronge metal type caps. These had a little shell you could load with tiny potato punchouts, like the ones used in "spud guns". This was in the fifties, we did not play cowboys and indians but WWII battles against the Germans. Most of the time in in bombed out backyard ruins of which there were still many at that time.
