If they had included Gardner's ending ("So may you all.") it would have flavored the entire film differently. Still love it.

Jeremy Geragotelis it's incredibly weird that they chose gardeners Tale to be a Kids film at all it's I mean the source material is just coated with adult themes not a lot of levity to towards kids film

What? Was Grendel angered at finding Umfirth dead? At 3:43, even Hrothgar seems shocked by Beowulf's actions and attitude.

I wonder how John Gardner would feel about this. It's very hard to put together the movie's intentions.
@Bandersnatch418 жыл бұрын
missmoonjelly it is an odd choice for a Kids film I mean they do make things a lot more silly at the same time they do keep in a few dark Concepts white Grendel biting people's heads off and stuff like that but at the same time to make Grendel too cute
@TS2dethmonkey11 жыл бұрын
I hate to sound like one of those people, but I preferred the book. I think this film made Grendel a little too sympathetic and made Hrothgar far too villainous (and stupid for that matter). In the book it felt like that it was a little more grayer, with Grendel becoming more villainous (though still sympathetic due to the fact that his villainy is driven by an insanity due to his loneliness, inflated ego and unhealthy brand of nihilism) while Hrothgar becoming more sympathetic and pitiful, making both characters no different from each other. That and I liked that there was a sense that in the novel, Grendel was a unreliable narrator.

you make a good point. I ouhgt to reread that book again at some point

TS2dethmonkey Secondly, if it ever got a live action adaptation, Guillermo del Toro would be the perfect director. He's often had a fondness for storytelling in which the focus is on the monsters/creatures, to whom he gives a lot of humanity
@Bandersnatch418 жыл бұрын
TS2dethmonkey no I totally agree with you the book is a million times better than this in fact it's a very odd choice for a Kids film considering the heavy adult themes in the source material. but they could have done a whole lot worse

The one part where the movie does better than the book is Beowulf who comes off more like Hannibal Lecter and in a lot of ways is all the rough edges of Gardner's Grendel without any of the sympathetic bits.

i feel really sorry for Grendel. i don;t care how evil and sadistic and insane he is said to be, i still think he is an amazing character. And i was sad that Beowulf had to kill him.
@SuperCaders10 жыл бұрын
In this, Grendel is depicted as a sympathetic, poetic and more human-like character in a plot that revolves around his point of view on Hrothgar and the Danes. At the very end after Beowulf kills him, I thought about the saddest moments in my life watching Grendel succumb to his wounds outside and helplessly cry for his mama.

Cade Terry in the novel it's a lot more gray area he still a murderous bastard at the same time he still sympathetic it depends on how you view the book

I'm still trying to figure out how he ended up toward the window. I mean Grendel looks strong enough to where he can shoulder rush Beowulf into the wall hard enough to kill him. And the dog? Pft..all he had to do was lift his foot and step on him, the whole scene seemed pointless to me. But I suppose he had to die somehow, even if it didn't make sense. I agree though, Poor Grendel. .-.
@nathancaldwell5443 Жыл бұрын
@@Maximus1Decimus The book was far more brutal, Grendel tried to do that, but Beowulf only fastened his grip, and managed to brutalize and torment the monster. Grendel at one point has a vison of the dragon in Beowulf's place, mauling him.

@inkdork Oh, boy, if you've read the book, I feel a bit more pity for him, as it has more on his disconnection from his mother after the event with the tree. And BOY, was that a traumatic even for him! He was only a child when that happened. But, eventually he "puts her aside" to go the the Shaper's funeral, ultimately breaking away from his mother entirely. And then he gets his arm pulled off and THEN he really wants her. That's the part that sort of gets to me :( . Poor Mama.

Interesting that as thought-provoking as this all is, we have just traded one monster for another and have just put human traits on Grendel while damning humanity.
@Bandersnatch418 жыл бұрын
bahamutkod in the original story it's a lot of Grey area at the same time you hate Humanity for what they've done to him at the same time Grendel is also evil for what he has done to the people of the mead-hall both are sympathetic and hateable for different reasons this movie it's blurring the line too much
