Iran’s ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ Movement - Dr Shabnam Holliday

The death of the Kurdish woman, Jina Mahsa Amini, in September 2022 sparked the largest protests in Iran since the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The protests threaten the legitimacy of the Islamic Republic as a political system.
Beyond Iran, the protests have highlighted that Iranians reject gender-based, race-based, and religion-based violence. In addition to addressing the complexity of these protests, the lecture will place them in historical and regional context.

Shabnam is Associate Professor in International Relations at the University of Plymouth.

The list of demands presented here (21:33) is absurd. Insisting on the equality of men and women is essential; dragging in LGBT... rights is a guarantee that you will be ignored. One is fundamental, the other is tertiary. The most important rights to pursue are these: 1) The right to speak and publish without intimidation or arrest 2) The rights of habeas corpus: no secret arrests, representation by council, open trials. 3) The right of women to be regarded as fully equal to men in society. It is embarrassing to see the feminist class persistently get this wrong, and to place relatively trivial matters above these essential concerns.

That's your opinion; they have the right to set whatever priorities they want. LGBT issues are not at all marginal to LGBT people, or those who know them.
