Professor Flood gives a fabulous overview of the lives and work of two mathematicians, Hamilton and Boole: www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...
William Rowan Hamilton (1805-1865) revolutionized algebra with his discovery of quaternions, a non-commutative algebraic system, as well as his earlier work on complex numbers. George Boole (1815-1864) contributed to probability and differential equations, but his greatest achievement was to create an algebra of logic 'Boolean algebra'. These new algebras were not only important to the development of algebra but remain of current use.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and...

His trips into the parts of mathematics that I haven't learned much about, together with the stories of the pioneers involved, never disappoint. They are a perfect appetizer for further studies, placing things in their historical and logical context, without drowning in the massive detail which is appropriate after one has such of a larger contextual picture.

I love how this lecture combines the history of the ideas along with their essence. Unique in its kind! "[These two] mathematicians [have] liberated algebra from the constraints of arithmetic."

This Great Irishman describes the compulsively scribbling Hamilton so tenderly , that it's nigh impossible to not be enchanted by both of them . I'm totally in awe by his lectures , with their delicate balance of wisdom and wit .

It felt as if there had to be more , beyond the quaternion , especially in 8 dimensions . Apparently there is : Octonions ; and there are other Hyper Complex Number Systems . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternion

This series by Prof Flood is the kind of good preparation and presentation that makes a reiterative assessment of the underlying principle available to students. It provides Orientation, from the various approaches of past investigations into phenomena as it is, ie WYSIWYG Physical existence derived from duration history.

The 1-0 of superposition "synthetic" duality (?), implies that because there are those alternative identities of 1, then there are an initial combination of states of +/- position/area or probability 1, or operation 1 by transition conducted through zero, =reflection so the simultaneous function of 1*-1orthogonal = "area" i, ie simultaneous states of infinity-being (Singularity) quantum mechanical in cause-effect duality in one-way operation, constitute the vector origin of all information as Phi in the Universal wave-package. (?) (Comment, possibly not mathematical closure) QM multiplicity/duality, multiplication-division of 1-0D is the infinite enumeration-quantization of the Quantum Time-duration Fields Mechanism, Eternity-now, into infinite, dimensionally compound phase-state modules. Because the real numbers are abstracted identities of continuous interference connection of irrationality, ie numbers are dual natured divisions and active modes between superimposed density-intensity of time-duration, AM-FM probabalistic constants. i, j, k multiplication properties of i => Quantum Superposition omnidirectional-omnidimensional unity-connection universally. (See 3Blue 1Brown on Quarternions) So if the alternate name-identity of the dimensional categorization that is generalized to be eternal-infinity superposition, the here-now singularity is the Universally distributed quality temporal "monopole" vanishing point of phase-state modulation. The identified set of all connection is synchronous Eternity-now, self-defining, and the basis of Boolean Algebra. (by the inherent "Rigour" of eternity-now temporal superposition -> probabilistic occurrence) Boolean Logic 3D+T field of "live" synchronous (phase-locked circuit-chemistry) phenomena. QM-TIMING.
