As a Korean, I can confirm that it is a common Korean proverb. “울다가 웃으면 엉덩이에 털난다“. Although I must confess that I haven’t thought of it in such philosophical, historical manner!

As a Korean, I can confirm its an actual quote. When I was a kid if I cried after being disciplined by my dad. He would tell a joke right after to make me laugh and then hit me with that quote which would make me laugh even harder while still sobbing.

What George says is interesting. Crying is healthy release/processing, but what about laughter? You laugh when you're suprised, happy, but a lot of people might also laugh when they're nervous. I've noticed doing that myself, sometimes. So yeah, I think it can be release, but not of pain, more of nervous energy.

I bet every Korean watching this is nodding, not shaking their heads. It’s a very common expression in Korea, but doesn’t have any serious implications. I think it just provides some relief from the mood becoming too awkward when someone is crying, by making them crack up, laugh, whatever.

To *actually* give more thought to that "saying" - and, *trying* to give it some, 'context' - a melodramatic series could evolve out of it - *but* "They laugh and cry at the same time!" that's why...- let's keep Graham Norton's level-headed agreeableness!

울다가 웃으면 엉덩이에 털난다 is the word she was trying to say - we do say it a lot, but not in a serious way I think growing up, we used it to make friends feel better and make them laugh more when they cried, then laughed bc they felt better

Its a saying. Its like how comedian Bobby Lee tells the story of how his mom was walking with her 5 year old sister to school after the Korean War and realized that she forgot something at home so she told her 5 year old sister to wait and she'll run home and be right back. When she ran home and came back her 5 year old sister was was dead and in pieces on the road bc she had been hit and run over by a US miltary jeep that used to tear around Korea back then. So she went home got her parents who came and had to pick up pieces of their daughter. Out of that trauma you somehow have the their sons who are f'ed up but hilarious.
