Michael Deakin Don't bother being in the conversation if all you can attack is a straw man. None of the science or the economics is called for "going back to the dark ages". Indeed climate change is already costs over half a trillion of lost economic activity each year NOW. www.worldbank.org/en/topic/climatechange/overview Whereas the denier narrative is coming from the fossil fuel industry and right wing ideologues. There is much discussion on here about the laughter at circa 9m48s. To be honest, I think they were laughing with her and not at her. The laughter was also accompanied by a warm applause. Greta was pointing out the arguments and put downs that people in authority tend to reply with. To the credit of those who attended, I think they recognised and were acknowledging the truth in what she said and were laughing at how they themselves as politicians etc tend to reply and the irony of it. Adults do tend to put children down. Indeed, the older we get, the higher the age of the person we put down as 'too young to understand' gets older with us. Regardless, I didn't sense any malice in that laughter. There is also scorn against the politicians in the room. That may nor may not be deserved, but I think that those who took the time to attend and listen to her are people who also share the same concerns as the rest of us. In many ways, Greta Thunberg was very likely preaching to the converted. If we do not tackle climate change with the urgency said to be necessary and the worst comes to the worst, the circumstances will be just as bad for politicians as they would be for anyone so it is worth remembering that they are people too and have as much a vested interest in protecting 'the world as we know it' as anyone. Since we are currently talking about at least decades in the future before the worst effects of climate change take place, it is also worth remembering that a lot of those politicians sitting in that room will not be politicians at that time and not receive any preferential treatment if even that will be possible. Nevertheless, those politicians who are actively trying to instigate change need to be empowered and the only way to empower a politician is with strong public opinion. This is why Greta Thunberg is important. She doesn't hold the solutions, but she has the ability to garner attention and mobilise public support - thus also those to indirectly empower those politicians who are also keen to see things moving forward much quicker.
We truly have been blessed and rewarded with a true representative for humanity, in cause and belief and the truth. Cos that's exactly who Greta is, this amazing, yes, amazing young woman who speaks nothing but the truth, the ABSOLUTE truth. Her speech here has proved that all the more, and what she says is not to be doubted for a single second, cos it's a hundred percent correct. If a world president should ever be selected, one who could lead us into the future we now need to work hard about creating for our children, our children's children, there's only one candidate: this wonderful amazing truthful young girl. Greta, your words are what I now listen to only, I couldn't be more happier to say that Earth well and truly deserves you to walk it

Video misses the beginning of her speech: "My name is Greta Thunberg. I am sixteen years old. I come from Sweden and I speak on behalf of future generations. I know many of you don't want to listen to us - you say we are just children. But we're only repeating the message of united climate science. Many of you appear concerned that we are losing valuable lesson time, but I assure you we will go back to school the moment you start listening to science and give us a future. Is that really too much to ask? In the year 2030..."

Is time for scientific responses. University of East Anglia published on Sep 2013 that "the earth will cease to be habitable somewhere between 1.75 and 3.25 billion years from now". We need more sustanaible data about that announcement, I think it is time to treat with respect what was pointed out by Greta Thurnberg. And avoid laughter that tend to underscore what was mentioned by this young woman: the responsible people do not see with seriousness the great problem that we will face in a short time the inhabitants of the planet earth

I suggest that those watching this video go do a Planetary Dynamics course. It's not easy, but you get a full understanding of how planets are formed. You understand how various atmospheres work across a range of worlds and their tectonics. And to all those who laugh at this wonderful girl... The shame you will be feeling in 15 years - you deserve it. Just to put in perspective how stupid humans are: One Carrington level CME from the Sun hitting us will wipe out all electronics on one side of the Planet. (Or more depending on duration) No-one bothered to harden power plants against it, because of the cost. Yet we have an entirely electronic society. Now the kicker: That happened in 1859. Our reaction? Willfully ignoring it. Ironically, it might be the answer to our carbon problem. By sending half the planet back to the stone age. And these kids cant use an abacus. Here is what happens in America alone: www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/what-damage-could-be-caused-by-a-massive-solar-storm-25627394/

Why does no one ever speak about the fact that we need to reduce population, plain and simple method to reduce pollution environmental degradation and methane/CO2 emissions it would seem but I suppose that can never come to pass as long as countries compete for resources and we bicker about trivial things
@Norgg.5 жыл бұрын
The wealthiest 10% of the population produce half the emissions, those are the ones that can be easily cut first. Reducing population ethically through education and access to family planning would take much more time than we have, and even so we need to work towards net emissions below zero.

In 200 years, no matter what happens with how bad CC will get - she'll be remembered as one of those who spoke truth to power. It's no consolation, but I truly believe her name will be in the history books of the 23rd century and beyond. Unfortunately, the powers she's going up against are more than willing to see large swaths of humanity die so long as they can preserve their wealth. And if it is threatened, they will kill for it.
