Martina can sing better.

Martina has a better voice. It happens a lot with composers, for example Bob Dillon can't sing a lick but his songs win awards world wide.

While Martina gets more views, the royalities generally dictate that the songwriter makes more from a song than the performer. Therefore, For everytime Martina's version of the song is played, Gretchen will make more money from it than Martina. It reminds me of what Dolly Parton said when many people thought Whitney Houston was the writer or at least the first performer of "I will always love you". She, said: "They can say Whitney wrote the song as long as I get the check"

You heard her basically denounce how the song got sold or filled out. Peters did a lot of favors....she propelled Yearwood too. Garth Brooks wife. The way it works isn't fair or nice . But the songs were for sale. I personally will always love Gretchen's own versions of her own songs best. I DO wish Terry Clark had picked up When You are Old instead of McBride. Terry had the vocal chops and her other songs were all sort of abrasive. When You Are Old is Peter's best. And it didn't hit. But I think it could have if Clark had picked it up

Gretchen has a nice voice but a little weak on some of the strong parts. But that in no way takes away that she was the writer of a very powerful song. Martina has a stronger more faceted voice. My actual favorite for singing this song is Pat Benatar.
