Thanks everyone! Shoutout to Jake for editing these videos - there's a ton going on behind the scenes and he does an incredible job. A couple more fine details: I used Gretsch's stock Remo Permatone heads on all of these. Coated over clear, and the bass drum has a coated "Permastroke" as I call the Permatone Powerstroke. For the 16"/18"/20" bass drums, I used the 20" Agop Signature ride and upped it to the 22" Signature for the larger 22"/24" sizes.✌

Great demo, great editing, AND..... that 20/12/14 has me salivating! They sound BIG, but with the control of the smaller diameters. NOTHING sounds nicer than a 5-lug, 8 x 12 Gretsch tom. 💓

I love listening to you play, Noah! A very creative mind on the kit. My personal favorite was the 24” kit (I’m just an ol’ rocker at heart)

Great video! Gretsch Brooklyn sounds amazing to me, but the video format of showing all sizes was super useful for me living in a large city and hauling gear is a real challenge. So a 16 bass drum really speaks to me in terms of transport. But I’m hearing the right bass drum frequencies, and the right fullness around a 20. Ideally at 22 and beyond. In some venues I play, if I do get my 22x18 there it’s challenging even fitting it through some door frames around some tight corners. If anyone has a success story playing a 16 or 18 I’m all ears!

As soon as you got to the 20" my ears said"now there's the bass drum. Although 18's can work well in light situations and jazz, they just still don't have that kick drum sound ( some might but, not many) as for the 16, forget it too. Or if you're in a fusion band then use them all at once. For all around playing I'll take the 22 or 24 all day long over the others.. With all that said this is a great demo video. Cheers

Listen to some of my videos, tell me if my bass drum sounds like a bass drum. It all comes down to tuning and volume, not pitch. As size increases, so does volume. Pitch mostly comes down to tuning.

Thank you. I really enjoyed this video. I agonised for years on whether to move down from a 22” kick to a 20” and finally took a leap of faith to a Progressive Jazz USA Custom (20/12/14) and am so happy I did. Videos like these really help. The Brooklyn series is outstanding and the exclusive finish you have is stunning. Great work. I don’t think I’m ever going back to big drums.

20” BD are the best size EVER! 18” are great and a 22” is perfect for Rock and really laying into it but a 20” just does it all.
@TimBatkin

Yes I agree. I will never go back, might even go smaller (18 or 16), but I do love my 20. So much easier to move and I tune mine wide open with no port and it has a mighty low end punch. It’s funny, when I used 22s it had PS3 on the batter, EQ3 ported Reso and a huge blanket on the inside and it was just a thud. It lacked the tone.

For playability nothing beats a 14"X20" bass drum. They're like rally sports cars. But for sound, give me a 14"X24" all day. Nice playing and a good demonstration!

At 12:47 I notice that there is some kind of black cover mounted on the tom? I assume to prevent scratching from the snare drum. Where can I find one?

20 inch bass drum is ideal.

Great comparison… But hard for me to get past anything smaller than 20” just not really sounding like a kick drum… so I think that might be the minimum for me as much as the smaller 18” kick is really appealing for transport. Overall, all the drums sound really good… gotta love that Great Gretsch Sound! Some great playing going on as well… well done!

I like your jazz approach. When comparing different size of bass drums, it is very difficult to do it when you are playing different licks with each kick. Additionally, the kicks are almost inaudible. That's my problem with Gretch drums. 30 degree bearing edges can be nice on toms, but for any kind of rock they are useless on the kick. You can't hear the kick above the mix.

I notice that the toms are always tuned high in videos, why is that? Bop tuning is limiting the appeal of any set.
@spvdrums

if you want to slack the head and muffle it up you can do it on your own time. high tunings show the actual resonance of the drums and smaller kits tend to go dead with low tuning
