All 50s'-70's Gretsch's have the factory neck screw under an ebony plug, it's just the way they made 'em. There were two types; this one is a dovetail neck joint, if the screw went into the side of the neck it was just a channel joint. My first was a '65 Tennessean I bought in 1967 and it had this identical issue.

Man, great work. For being loose, that neck was really on there. I agree, the screw is unnecessary.

@@StringTechWorkstations btw, 0.90" is the width of the head of the fret and 0.055" is the height of the tang, correct ? i'm no expert
@StringTechWorkstations

.055" is the height of the crown. The tang is the portion that goes into the saw kerf; it is .030" ( including the bead ). The tang without the bead is .021".

Was the screw part of another repair or factory install?

I have seen these on enough Gretsch guitars over the years ... that I would have to say yes.

Gretsch went from a screw in the bottom, to a screw in the side, in the late50s/early 60's. Its factory. The plugs in the bottom were usually ebony, I dunno about the ones in the side.

A lot of the early Gretsch neck joints were kinda crude .... the Korean and Japanese joints were much better.
