We put the Gretsch G2622 Streamliner to the test to see if it can hang with the big boys in the world of jazz. Is it a dream come true for aspiring jazz cats or a tone-deaf nightmare? I have strung this up with my custom gauge strings (13-15-20-28-38-48) and did some work on this inexpensive guitar to see if it is a good pick for beginner jazz players.

● An honest sound demo to see what it sounds like for jazz
● Playability deep dive: neck feel, fretwork, and action ️‍

When Rich Severson plays it looks and sounds like a guitar plays itself and his fingers just glide over like surfer gliding ocean waves. Magical stuff. And soul flies away too. Real classical playing.

I had to rewind the Minor lesson a few times, but yes! very useful! and your tip about just knowing the two repeating fingering patterns to play it makes it a lot easier - thanks Rich :)

I'm not sure what you are playing through but this is an awesome tone for the guitar. I put your string set on my Epiphone Joe Pass and while it helps it never gets this good. I was gifted a similar model Gretsch 2 years ago and it plays great but never has this level of jazz tone. Please give more details on tweaking our guitars to get the best tone, including the amp settings. Thanks for sharing your talents.

I am able to get these kinds of tones from the Epiphone JP and this Gretsch. Although I think the Gretch G2420 sounds a little better. What kind of amp do you use? What settings? To me, the amp has the biggest effect. Some amps need to be dialed in very tightly, and some can never get a good jazz sound. What tone and volume on the guitar? What brand and size picks? When I first started playing jazz, I could never get a good jazz tone. Over time I found that I need to pick the strings more gently, particularly on chords. I also switched to a medium pick, a dunlop celluloid which is a standard shape. I always put the guitar volume and tone on 10. Occasionally I role the tone down to 8. It actually sounds to me like rick lowers the tone more than I do, but I just don't really like that sound. It just likes clarity IMO. I use a DV Mark Jazz 12 which is a great amp. I generally use setting of volume 25% to around 45% depending on the guitar, bass 33%, mid 65%, treb 45%,. Sometimes I use bass 40%, mid 65%, treb 65%. I also have gotten a good jazz sound on roland cube amps, like the roland cube 20. But the amp is critical. I purchased a quilter amp that Rick uses some times, and I had great difficulty getting a really good jazz tone out of that. I returned it. You also need to use the neck pickup exclusively and you should be picking close to the neck pickup. You also need to make sure your pickups arent too close to your strings. Its very easy to do this. Just set the pickup close to the strings, then lower it to see if it makes it better or worse. I usually also make sure the top upper part of the pickup is not closer to the strings than the bottom part. If the upper part is closer, the bass tone will be louder and sometimes it muddies up the sound. Also it can create feedback. Play around with your amp settings. Put the guitar volume and tone at 10. Put the amp midrange at about 60-65%. Put the treble and bass both to 50%. Adjust the volume on the amp to the volume you want. You need to have a pretty decent volume for it to sound good. because if the volume is too low, you will never get a good sound. If you dont like the sound with those setting drop the base by 1 and readjust volume on amp if needed. See if that helps the sound. If it improves it, consider dropping the bass another 1 unit to see if it further improves. If it still isnt good try adjusting the treble by 1 unit, keeping the bass at whatever sounded best. Adjust the volume to whatever is needed to give a good volume.

I bought it for the light weight. The fret ends needed dressing and the controls were almost non-functional. Sent it back. It sounds like you are adding more effects than previously. Nice playing.

Good advice, thank you. Am no longer interested in 17" bodies but DeArmonds are great. Am thinking of selling Heri-GE. Have played 60's Starfires in the 60's. I will be on the lookout for one. Why the 98-99?@@rickberry4477

I have this guitar but mine has the coil splits. Weird that yours doesn’t. I do play some jazz on it but it’s really my guitar for blues. Love the Gretsch guitars. You get a lot for your money.

Wonderful jazz playing, thanks. I'm skipping through and at :42 minutes. Your spec sheet is for the 2023 G2622 models and you're holding the previous gen model. No push pull master coil-splitting, Brod'Tron 2 not 3 pickups and large block fretboard inlays not thumb inlays. Otherwise pretty much the same guitar.

The first question i'd ask to anyone charging $4,300 for their Guitars would be, is it better than a Heritage? They're the best i've ever heard and they don't even cost that much, most of the time.
