one of the things i love most about your vids-,save the incredible drums and cymbals- is that your recording of them is true to the sound! I cannot stand it when people make drum videos and the sound is totally over produced, flat and dull... it makes no sense to me when drum manufactures have videos of their drums and they just sound so muted.

Thank you!!! When we play amazing instruments, the right way to record these is to use good mics and a good audio recorder. A perfect tune and great attention and respect on sound, make the rest. Naturalness in sound and naturalness in listening, this must be the rule. Thank you!!

Congratulations on your project, what a fantastic result! And very powerful playing too! I have a 1960s progressive jazz kit that I’m still trying to get the tuning dialled in on, could you possibly share your tuning approach for the kit? I’d love to get my rack, floor tom and snare (I use a 1920s Ludwig) sounding like these, with the bass drum at a slightly lower pitch given it’s a 20”. Thanks

Magnificent restoration. I am curious as to how you have solved the oversized shells. I have seen that you leave a margin without wrap, but in the last photos it seems that you have sanded the wrap at the ends, but these are assumptions and I would like to know how you did it. I always thought of removing the wrap and having a luthier treat the natural finish of the wood. But if your solution is good, the wrap protects the shells and is how those drums looked at the time.

Thank you! When restoring a vintage Gretsch drum with new wrap, I consider stopping the wrap at 15mm, because the modern heads can fit better on shell, tuning is easily and the sound is the best possible. In the 60s the Gretsch factory puts on drums his heads, more larger than the modern heads, so there was no problem for tuning with full wrapping of the shell. Ok, today we can use a Remo Classic Fit or an Aquarian American Vintage which are larger than other modern heads, but stopping the wrap 15 mm from the edge allows any other modern heads to be fitted and look saves as the wrap end stays under the head rim when the drum is assembled. Here you can see, and listening, another Gretsch kit restored in natural varnish gloss finish. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIerk2ajbZ10jq8 If you use the correct varnish or the correct glue for a great wrap, the sound is always great! Thanks again! Franco

Amazing restoration and excellent playing. Can I ask where you got the drum wrap? I know that Gretch stopped making champagne sparkle because the wrap was so expensive.

What’s the spacing for the lugs when cutting down a 16? I saw you filled the holes in and redrilled the lugs. Thanks!
@FRANCODALMONEGODRUMS
@FRANCODALMONEGODRUMS Жыл бұрын
Yes, the original holes had to be filled and redrilled to mount the lugs at the same distance as a regular Gretsch bass drum of 14" deep. Thanks!

Great work , sir , they look and sound wonderful ! Did you retain the internal dampers on the bass drum and what is the fabulous snare ?! Fine drumming , too , if I may say 👏👏

Thank you!! No, in the bass drum I put a very small piece of Moongel only in the batter side head. The snare is an amazing AK copper shell 0,8mm, natural calf skin on batter side. Thanks again!

@@FRANCODALMONEGODRUMS - Thanks for the reply , the kit looks prettier with each view ! Having owned a copper-shell snare ( which sounded like Guns'n'Roses with added anvil and was best suited to generating earache ! ) the calf head makes it sound highly pleasing . Ciao 😃
@FRANCODALMONEGODRUMS
@FRANCODALMONEGODRUMS Жыл бұрын
The difference in sound is in the thickness of the shell...the thickness of the shell in this snare is 0,8 mm only!! So, the volume is much lower.
