Part 3 of 3. Here's the tanning process for this fur pelt I got from a good looking male California Grey fox late this season. After skinning and fleshing, I salt the flesh side well with 2 or 3 changes of salt, until the hide is very stiff and utterly dry. This preserves the hide and prevents the hair from slipping. in this case I had trouble removing the flesh with my knife so I used a dremel tool to do the fleshing after the pelt was dried, before proceeding to step 4 of the instructions which come with the hide tanning formula. I made a few mistakes throughout the process, but the performance of the tanning formula still exceeded my expectations by producing a soft, supple hair-on tan. It is important to let the hide dry after tanning before getting too rough with it during the breaking process, especially around the ears and tail, so the hair doesn't slip. Once it is dry, the hair should hold tight.

Just a tip if you want to make the stretching faster you can pull the skin side around a tree and pull it back and forth

did you cover the hides in salt for a day or two before this process? or did you go straight from the stretcher to the steps in the video?

Yeah thats one of the benefits of smoking. I can't say for sure but its a good idea to keep it dry.

Anyone got a easy way to get flesh off raccoons and possums?
@mountainbound
@mountainbound Жыл бұрын
The best fastest way of doing it is using a fleshing beam and a fleshing knife you can get on amazon for around 20 - $30. to make an easy makeshift beam, all you need are 2 2x4s and a 6-12" diameter plastic pipe. Screw the 2x4s together to make an X, and cut a deep notch about a foot from the end of the pipe. Stand the connected 2x4s upright while taking your notched pipe and securing it in the crook of the 2 planks. Make sure all 3 points of contact are firmly planted in the ground so they won't budge when you lean up against it. To flesh, drape the hide over the end of the beam and lean into it to hold everything in place. Then start scraping away all fat and tissue off of the skin using firm downward strokes with the fleshing knife, repositioning the hide as needed to expose different areas that need work. keep in mind that if you wait more than a day after killing the critter to do this step, the amount of effort needed to flesh it will compound until eventually it will be impossible, and instead you'll need to dry everything with salt and then sand off the flesh with a power tool. This works well too and is how I did it in this video, but it's not the ideal way you want to go about it.
