Derek knew richard was under intense pressure. Richard was pissed derek stayed calm. Thats how you difuse a bad situation. Things get in control if one person stays calm when the other is angry.

That "Go home ..." line was one that the patient (Isaac, the hospital's lab tech) said to Derek when Derek originally stopped the first attempt because it was too risky.

Unfortunately he did become chief at one point but then he ended up getting shot. Every person that became chief didn't like the job and stepped down. That's why Webber stepped down multiple times.

He performed a very risky and *very long and costly* surgery after being told no. The chief only allowed him a limited amount of time to perform the surgery, if he couldn't save Isaac's spinal cord he was to cut the cord to remove the tumor. As I recall, the hospital was not in good financial shape at that time and burning the operating room for as long as he did placed a massive financial burden on the hospital. I don't remember super clearly, I haven't watched this show since Shonda decided to drop an airplane on half the cast.

I understand why he fired Derek I understand why Derek did what Derek did Webber just fired the best surgeon he had and I love Derek I do but Derek held mer back she believed she could never be better then him she was wrong she surpassed Bailey the Webber her mother derek all of them
