Love the fey aspect of this monster. I immediately thought of using this as an NPC who originally presents to the party as an old witch or wise woman. With several housecats, of course. But it turns out she's watching this rural community and works as a hidden protector for them.

In our casual guild campaign I did a session where a godlike Cat Lord manifested his temple to replace the interior of the guild hall-- in the way cats will sit themselves wherever they please-- and the party had to go inside and try to convince him to go somewhere else. The temple featured a big hall with cats sunning themselves, and stepping into the sunlight made a character just curl up and fall asleep on the floor if they missed their wisdom save. Also had sections where different types of cat monsters tested and/or fought the party before they could go talk to the cat god.

Part of me forgot about these creatures. It's definitely been a while since I last saw them. The stat block is pretty good. Looking at other ones, I'd add in their stunning howl/roar and their hissing spit (cause opponent to go blind), bumping it up to a CR 15. I saw the comment about a potential warlock patron. That's a good idea.

Plot hook: cat lord vs (moon)rats. A group of moonrats are trying to kill a cat lord in the area. But since they only get the big brain during a full moon there is little evidence of their plan. But the cat lord is certain someone is out to kill them and because of this has recruited all the local cats to stay by them to protect them. The pcs can be recruited to retrieve someone cat to find this or hired by the cat lord as extra muscle or by a benefactor of the rats (3e mm2 for moonrats)

I think it'd be pretty cool to have a town that previously had rat problems, until seemingly out of nowhere cats that appear friendly yet have no owners turn up and keep the rats under control, so all the townsfolk love the cats while in the background a Cat Lord has taken up residence, probably not even for any nefarious reason, just that he looks after his group of small time thieves, urchins and other outcast members of society. More of a flavour aspect than a large plot hook, but it seems really cool to me.

I would add polymorph type ability : Cat Also if more a god like figure : Geas I like the idea of a Catlord in a thieves guild who changes friends and foes alike to do his bidding adds more of a chaotic nature in there. The adventure could start with one of the party members being shifted into a cat and rest of party trying to find their friend, while the changed party member try’s to find a way out of his/her situation.

I think theres only one Cat Lord at a time, I think it mentions that in the 2nd edition sheet on it as well as it not taking sides in human affairs much. But playing as a warlock whos patron sounds pretty fun maybe even become the next cat lord at the end of the campaign.

In an older campaign I ran a few years ago one of the PCs was the grand-daughter of the Cat Lord (the player loves cats). Throughout the campaign the Cat Lord would gift the PC certain items and powers eventually meeting the Cat Lord face to face. The relationship was never revealed in the campaign and the player didn't know. I'm now running a campaign with the same players using PCs that are descendants of the original PCs. The original PC is now the Cat Lord and is subtley influencing the PCs behind the scenes as they start their own adventures. The original player loves bringing her old PC in every once in a while to interact with the new PCs.

I think the rogues guild idea. I had an idea of the “nine lives” guild. Basically they pay a little old lady to live their and be the head of the guild while they run it. Who would suspect the cats of the crazy cat lady to run it. And if they kill off the grandma, they just get another one to live their rent free. Bonus if they get the grandmother of the person who just killed their past leader.

You could meet in the middle of having it be a tittle and having it be something more common like a race by having it be like a territorial thing, maybe have different ranks on it, low ranks can't become any non beasts or beast of x int or higher, mid can become beasts but not anything of x int or higher, high rank can have no restrictions, then you can both have the powerful demi god one and the smaller gang leader, you could even have a nerfed pc version and say that they only have accesses to those powers in a area they aren't out ranked in so the dm can even just turn it off if they want to

I like to imagine, that you can encounter many different Cat Lords all over the world, but there is only _one_ Cat Lord. The Cat Lord is only one single, very powerful deity, but holding Domain over all things feline has to imprint on the deity, so in true Cat fashion, they went _veni, vidi, et terebrata,_ and immediatelly wandered off, presumably in chase of a butterfly. There is only one Cat Lord, but being insatiatly curious, they abandoned their divine place, and split themself into countless beings, and scattered over the Multiverse, each and every one of them still a Cat Lord, but due to the split their power lessened to that of a powerful Fey Lord. Many Cat Lords speak of themself in third person, as they still are vaguely aware of the other Cat Lords, some more powerful fragments knowing the exact location of several other Cat Lords at any given time and being able to telepathically communicate with them, while other shards will obtain this knowledge only after they run into another Cat Lord for the first time. But each one will feel it, when another Cat Lord enters their domain/comes within a certain distance. There could be a bunch of weaker shards working together, possibly posing as one single character, or one more powerful one, that poses as several different beings, or even splitting itself into several bodies. Some are good natured, others are more malicious, but they all share a spark of collective conciousness, often times subconciously. Those that are entirely aware of their origin, usually don't care much to become one entity again, seeing it as way more convenient to be split into countless bodies and personalities, as that lets them experiance the most of the worlds. And if one is ever killed, it is either absorbed by the nearest other Cat Lord, or forms anew over time.

An additional power I'd add would be that whatever form a Cat Lord is in will always seem to be it's natural form. No detection short of a wish or maybe a demi-god can detect otherwise. (Except maybe if a mage has a feline familiar. All felines should know the King of the Cats, but would they reveal that to their master?)

In one frpg I play, there is an alien spice called Catlords. And they are polymorphic, among other stuff. I bet the authors had nothing to do with the D&D deep lore, so... It's pretty interesting.

I always think of this magnificent creature as some sort of rarely-known god. Not like equal to angels, eldritch monstrosities, or what have you, but a powerful god nonetheless. So I can already imagine a Catlord and Moonrats, my second favorite kinds of creatures in D&D, being in some crazy alliance together. The Moonrats help the Catlord and the cats it commands by infiltrating through small places or areas that have magic to deflect the Catlord, allowing them to pass through unbothered, and the Catlord in return gives them protection and friendliness of the cats it commands, even at some times giving them food or other materials to build their underground city. Yes sure, it does not sound very idealistic. But this is the magic of D&D. Anything is possible with enough imagination.

Tabaxi prefer stories over actual treasure (not always of course) so I have my tabaxi player visited by the Cat Lord and asks to hear her stories. She tells him about the campaign so far and the next morning the bartender said that tabaxi she was talking with left her a gift. +1 rapier.

Once in visual contact the cats are in psyic contact with the cat lord and will follow their order but until then the party has been tasked to literally hers cats. What does the Cat Lord do with the cats afterwards? Thats up to the DM.

Then have the Army of cats and the party wage a war against the BBEG where the army grows with every cat in each city the cat army moves across as the ever growing army proceeds to conquer the BBEG's kingdom with the cat army in order to form the Kingdom of cat!

I remember the Cat Lord. I did just a basic search, because the way you described it and the way I remember it was two different things. The wiki list what forms it can take on and whole bunch abilities. It states the Cat Lord is faster than a horse, a riding horse has a movement speed of 60 feet. You even make fun of it having the ability to change form. There's a bunch of creatures in D&D that shape change. It seems like it's almost to silly or outrageous for you to cover. You present it as a wimp, you definitely missed the mark on this one. To me if your hearts not into it, why do it!?
