My girlfriend and I adopted a greyhound from Joyce and Fastfriends.org in July. It's been a wonderful experience. We couldn't be happier! Thanks for making this video and helping to promote the fostering and adoption of these dogs. I'm sharing this on my facebook!

They can also be intensely stubborn and hard to train. Especially those bred for and used at the track. I don't recommend them for beginners. They often have a lot of insecurities and fears they need to get over when they come off the track. They don't have much obedience training and they don't have any experience being taught to learn. It's something that needs to be noted. People are always so quick to suggest greyhounds as the perfect dog, but they have their pros AND cons like any other.
@dallascoug8 жыл бұрын
I understand why you feel that way. It took me awhile to realize how to train my greyhound. they are smart, sensitive and independent. so training is gentle, patient, calm and short. I had to adjust my training to the breed. =)

Did you include food in your training? lol Mine loves Mozzarella cheese, I know I can teach him to text on my iphone in exchange of a mozzarella string. They do tend have the "What's in it for me?" attitude.

Florida has a 98% adoption rate. A greyhound in the UK called riverside tadgh had a career ending injury due to a broken hock. What happened did he get put down? NO! The track put a metal plate in his leg and he shows no signs of previous injury and the track has insured the injury for the life of the dog!

Oh man, you have done such a great service just by producing this beautiful piece, promoting awareness about greyhounds. Like Joyce says, they are incredibly loving and human, and should never have seen the risks of racing. Our grey walks right up to us after every meal or treat, as if to thank us for providing her a great home life, away from racing. Thank you!
@momtoty3 жыл бұрын
sixten3 Greyhounds love to race, it's what they are bred to do, run and chase. You can't stop a greyhound from racing when those trap doors open. The risks are very minimal. There is a greater risk of injury to adopted greyhounds. They are loved and cared for from birth until they retire. That's what makes them the best family pet.

My 1st husband and I rescued a greyhound from the track in Plainfield CT. Excellent dog! Donovan (who has now crossed the rainbow bridge), had such an amazing, gentle and sweet personality. Oddly, he would LOVE any red food. Tomato's, raspberries, even red jello! If he didn't want his plain dog food we only had to put catsup on it. Fun Fact- Greyhounds are the only dog breed mentioned in the Bible!

Greyhounds are one of the most loving breeds. My mom used to live in Arizona where there was a track in the 80s-90s and she said that greyhounds deserve better. Once they are unfit for racing, lose or other nonsense the owners simply leave them on the road for dead, and too often they don't get abused. If you are looking for a pet, definitely find a greyhound rescue center. They are great pets, relatively low maintenance and easy to train. I personally don't own one, but a good family friend does and I spend a lot of time with it. Thanks for reading 😄

Video approved by moi! I broke my leg racing, one week before my mandatory retirement. Luckily a shelter took me right away and fixed my leg. I was at the shelter for a whole year, then I got adopted. Now I get to eat cookies, nap, and visit my friends all day, every day. I also have a tiny fur brother I love very much and I have no desire to eat him at all ;) Thanks for making this video about all my brothers and sisters. If anyone wants to see me race, just google Gable Warjab, but don't watch the last one, it was no fun...

Greyhounds are an awesome breed! But, they will not become extinct once racing ends. The breed has been around for thousands of years before racing started and it will be around long after it's gone. If you do not believe me go and visit a racing kennels for yourself and you will see how well they are looked after. Top quality food and exercises and daily massages! I own two retired racers and after visiting trainers Patrick Janssens kennels me and my daughter were so impressed that my daughter got a job there. Galgos are the greyhounds of Spain fI there is no more racing in the USA, there are still many wonderful greyhounds (called Galgos in Spain) to adopt. Rather than racing, Galgos are used for hunting rabbits. After the hunting season (like when greyhounds stop winning at the track), so many galgos (greyhounds al a Spain) need warm, loving "forever homes". Please consider adopting a Spanish version of the greyhound - the GALGO. Same loveable dogs, same couch potatoes, same sweet deminers. I love these animals!!!

Greyhounds are subjected to cruelty in racing. They are the sweetest animals and have a lovely temperament. I would encourage anyone thinking of getting a dog to get a greyhound. People see, to think that they need a lot of exercise but actually they just sprint for a bit and then they are done for the day and they sleep for the rest of the day ☺️ everything the lady says is true, my greyhound loves to stick her face as close as possible to mine and stare into my eyes. They are just the sweetest dogs.
@momtoty3 жыл бұрын
Kit T Greyhounds are not abused. An abused greyhound can't race. These dogs are treated with the best love and care. They are kept in top physical condition so they can race. It's ridiculous to think you can abuse a dog and expect them to perform their best.

The dying out of racing line greyhounds would be nothing but a tragedy and it will happen if greyhound racing comes to an end. Please consider talking to some pro racing groups or trainers.
@eilidhsomerville55549 жыл бұрын
+acalmarises If there were so many caring individuals within the industry who supposedly love the breed then surely they would keep the racing lines going. However there are also coursing and show lines so the breed wouldn't go extinct.
@acalmarises9 жыл бұрын
+Eilidh Somerville Hi, I don't believe that racing breeders would have the means to maintain the current breeding program as it is if the greyhound industry were to close down. Financially, responsible breeding is quite expensive and most responsible breeders turn a very small profit. Many responsible breeders (of other dog breeds) do it more as a hobby than as a way to make a living. Right now, racing greyhound genetic lines are very highly regulated/tracked and very specific dogs are bred for health and athleticism. With the end of the racing industry, regulations go out the window and leaves it open for irresponsible and backyard breeders to capitalize on the breed without selecting for traits in the same way that racing breeders do (i.e. selecting for colour or size instead of health and speed). Racing line greyhounds may not go extinct the same way that wildlife species are going extinct (due to habitat loss, hunting, etc.) but the breed will change and the racing line greyhounds as they are right now will disappear. This was even acknowledged by Joyce in this video. She said it would be bittersweet or a mixed blessing. I feel differently- I think it would be an absolute tragedy. Also, I was specific in stating that racing line greyhounds would go extinct as they are very distinct in characteristics, conformation, and health from show line greyhounds. I'm unsure about coursing line greyhounds as, to my knowledge, the greyhounds that participate in coursing are usually retired racers (but I'm not sure so I can't speak confidently about that). Of course this is all hypothetical. Luckily, this is not currently the situation so there are still lots of retired racing greyhounds available for adoption.
@carolbeckerrizzo81319 жыл бұрын
This was nicely done, however, for anyone watching this, VERY FEW greyhounds get put down when they are done racing.... maybe a few that have injuries too serious to fix. Healthy, retired greyhounds are in high demand by greyhound adoption groups all over the country. It is GETTING THEM THERE that is the real problem. If anyone can help with transportation of dogs from Florida to other states, contact your local greyhound adoption group and volunteer to drive! Also, retired racing greyhounds should NEVER be off leash unless they are in a completely fenced area with no means of escape. This video had clips where it looked like dogs were running loose. That is a big "no-no"! carolB, president - God's Greyts Greyhounds, Orlando FL.

Hi, this video has been weighing heavy on my mind and I wanted to say a few things that I think are important for this discussion. I think that it's important to point out that, while there are some bad apples amongst trainers and breeders, the US greyhound racing industry is very strictly policed by the NGA and AGC. Greyhound owners and trainers care deeply for the dogs and work hard to make sure that any rescue groups that needlessly euthanize a greyhound are kicked out of the community. Greyhound racing is a complex situation in the US. I wish you had spoken to some trainers or some pro-racing adoption groups in this video as I think there are many misconceptions about how greyhounds are treated. Alternative perspective are important for understanding nuanced issues. What's less seen is the amount care and love trainers and owners have for the dogs and the collaborative efforts they make to ensure that they're not abused or mistreated during their working and retirement lives.
@paulaotteson20449 жыл бұрын
+acalmarises Why don't you take a look at the websites of Fast Friends, The Greyhound Adoption Center and GreySave? You will see the huge amount of broken leg dogs these groups take in. Dogs that the GROUPS pay to fix, not the racing owners or trainers. Many greyhounds in our area come in with coat loss, various injuries, scars - especially on their muzzles. It's apparently not strictly policed enough as ex-racing greyhounds from the US end up in the hands of good 'ol boys who breed them with other hunting dogs for underground racing or they end up in other countries like India and China.
@momtoty3 жыл бұрын
@@paulaotteson2044 Do you have proof of these allegations? Did you see it yourself? Broken legs are very rare and most owners do pay to have them healed up. The tracks are the safest place for them to run. They are groomed before each race so there are no holes or obstacles for them. The scars are from playing hard with their siblings for the 1st 14 months of their lives. They stay on the farms and play and just are puppies before they begin training to race. Racing greyhounds DO NOT end up with the good old boys and get bred for hunting. Every retired racing greyhound that gets retired gets spayed and neutered so they can't be bred with other dogs. You really don't know anything about how this works. They don't go to India or China either. Those countries breed their own.

No greyhound is euthanized because they have no where to go. There are over 100 adoption groups in the USA right now and they all have waiting lists just waiting for retired racers to come to them. There is a shortage of retired racing greyhounds now because the tracks in FL had to close. You can't just go and adopt a greyhound whenever you want to. You have to get your name on a waiting list at an adoption group near you and then you'll have to wait awhile before one becomes available. Greyhounds owners do not put their greyhounds down.Many owners take their greyhounds home with them.
@kitt54188 жыл бұрын
I think it's disgusting to kill a dog purely because they are not at their prime. Most are euthanised at 3 years old. 3 years. Let that sink in. Sure they start to slow down at that age but they are still pretty damn fast. I love greyhounds they are the most loving breed I have ever had the pleasure of owning and I would never regret owning my Greyhound ☺️😊

Hi, just wanted to point out that live baiting is not practiced in the United States (where this was filmed). I'm almost certain it's illegal- but I'm not entirely sure. In either case, US greyhounds aren't trained with live baiting.

+Robert black Hi, I really can't speak to practices in Australia as I'm unfamiliar with the situation.
