Morning lads. Nice to put a picture to a face Barry. I live half a mile from the old Belle Vue greyhound stadium which is where the first ever greyhound race on an oval track took place in 1926. It finally closed in 2020. For a while it was a big part of working class culture but once stories of cruelty to the dogs emerged, people stopped going. Have a great day.

I have a very good friend in Rugby & another friend in Brighton that have Greyhound Rescue dogs. They for me do need a lot of looking after, but the owners say they are the most devoted & great loving dogs. You do have to make sure when you let them free there are no fences or sheep around. But when they get older they are very laid back. One of them still has all her winning flags & awards on the wall. She is 14 now & still going strong. She is a very noble proud, loved & happy dog.

Hi Dave. Was invited to a greyhound race night when i worked in Oxford. I couldn't bring myself to go. Loads of rescue hounds round here all wrapped up in their winter coats. ( Little smiles on their faces) Quite a few rescue race horses too, but i doubt as many make it further than the meat man.

Nice to see Barry. We wouldn't have anything to do with dog racing or horse racing. Both mean exploitation and cruelty to the animals involved especially when they are past their best and treated as a disposable asset to be replaced with another faster, fitter animal. We have a greyhound rescue charity shop in Warsop which we go to and the stories of the treatment of dogs are horrific. Racehorses often meet a sad end as well when they slow down, thats if they aren't killed while on the racetrack.

When i was a kid, we had a neighbour who use to rescue greyhounds he would then find them homes, this is something he told me about young children playing football outside his house, the ball kept going into his garden, the kids would jump his hedge trample his flowers to get the ball, so he went out telling the kids please knock boys I'll get the ball, ok mister one shouted, about half hour later a half-butt came through his window, going to his front door wondering what happened, shout who through that brick, one boy shouted can we have ball back mister, why the brick, the young boy replied, you did ask us to knock..

Morning Dave and Barry Bred for hunting/coursing 1000's of years ago - once hunting was obsolete they were a poor man's racehorse (bit like pigeons too) My granda bred, raced & kept groos when i was a wain so grew up with them. I had a rescue 1 (& a lurcher) as family pets - beautiful dogs with great temperament - I wouldn't have any other breed now.

Walthamstow and Haringey greyhound tracks I remember good to see you highlighting a once thriving traditional sport now declined, I remember my family placing bets. The horses are treated the same once they stop winning those aristocratic and Middle Eastern horsey people dump them out, so if greyhound sporting is ban then so should horse racing.

i used to love going the dogs i was only a kid but the chippy would do a scallop and scraps for10p and it was easy to get 10p of the adults going to watch the racing it seems that past when living in britain was good is gone , no chippy , no dog track , and ten p gets you nowt these days
