I wish I had known about these techniques back in the 1970's....although my horse was very patient with my insecurity and ignorance. Once when I was trying and failing at things, I had a meltdown. He put his head against me and blew. And that was it. He knew I was struggling, and was giving ME encouragement! Talk about humbling...I realized I didn't have a clue what I was doing. And decided I wouldn't ask him anything. We both gained confidence, and he was able to overcome his fears of hills. Our last year together, we would head out into the backcountry for hours. He would actually LOOK for something to climb or slide down. It was the most amazing feeling of connection. I've never forgotten. And those times of just the two of us in the hills, are some of my most favorite memories.

Note Karen Rohlf's comment at start of series, reminds me of lifelong commitment to ALWAYS finish your day with your horse on a positive note, no exceptions, no excuses. Even when the person has just been notified of a tragedy, his/her horse will sense the upset, not understanding its cause. Gather up your emotions, reaffirm to your horse he/she has done well, and you are there for him/her to place their complete trust & faith in.

To the girl worried about social media judging her horse techniques. Hello, I went thru this when Natural Horsemanship was a new title but not new in the tool box of trainers. It just took a while before a few cowboys took it and made billions from it. As far as I am concerned. A mustang is a horse and if you are around HORSE LOVERS then you are with good people. Those of you that feel that you need to intimidate a prey animal to gain any type of response is a BULLY and are not Horse Lovers. Do not change who you are and don't worry about offending a BULLY. Ok :) As far as I can see , you are doing great and your relationship with any horse will be nothing but short of extraordinary! Happy Trails. Deanna Sek (From Animal Lover to Another :)

This is great. I love this documentary. I watch Steve Young Horsemanship from the UK on youtube. He trains problem horses and he films the session from the very beginning to the end showing how he works with them. I have attended a Buck Brennaman clinic just briefly. Yes, in a perfect world, I agree. There is tremendous interference with the mustangs by the corrupt Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This agency terrorizes, injures & breaks up the wild herd families with helicopters, corralling them into holding enclosures. Many are sent to the slaughter pipelines in Canada & Mexico. So if a mustang gets a loving forever home, that's fine by me.

One of the best points you main this episode, is that a horse should not be started until their spine is mature. It should be at least 6 years old before being saddled and ridden.

I don’t understand why if we are putting the horse first are we then training them training them to the bit? If you can train a horse an any discipline you can train them without a bit and the horse will be happier!
@neilrowe1195 жыл бұрын
"With" or "without" a bit is not what makes a horse happy. Its the person using the tools and getting along.
@DaaTwah4 жыл бұрын
I am more in the anti-bit but I do agree it is the relationship with the animals human establish that creates the happiness
@trickedouttech321Ай бұрын
I agree and disagree with the social media part. I agree it's a hell hole. But most of the time it tears down the abusive terrible trainers. if you're a good trainer and don't abuse the horse. don't train with pain devices and just have good horsemanship you will be fine. There is a difference is trolls and constructive criticism. If you put out a video of you hitting your horse with a whip snapping on a pain bit, kick it with spur hard, you going to get trashed on, and rightfully so. We don't need to break horses like they did in the old days when these tools were invented for pain. Horsemanship and horse knowledge have come a very long way. When the bit was invented, we broke horses with pain and fear and wore them out. That is just not the case today. so the bit today is a tool to refine a well-trained horse but it's not to be used for early training. In fact, many have proven they can do anything with a horse and never use a bit. I still use them for refinement but not very often and I don't ride with them, no need I have a well-trained horse.

Two days experience with humans before I got him taught Midnite Star that he could more easily fight off humans than he could other predators. I confused him at first because I didn't behave like a predator. Eventually he smelled every part of me from head to toe and claimed me as his human. Arabians were bred for thousands of years to live as close companions to humans much like family members which makes them very different from other horse breeds.

I have a question : long time ago I knew a mare who reared up all the time, with every rider and so bad, she flipped over a few times. The horse was NOT mine, I only watched her over the years. Her last owner was able to control her, but that habit never stopped completely. Why did she do this?? For a mare, who had fauls this does not happen often. Her first owner did not ride her much, she had no pasture,.. But this all changed when the last owner bought her. I was very very young but I always thought she wants to scream something, tell something. But I did not say it - on the country side the people would think I am crazy. But her whole way of moving, looking, her ears, eys, ect - for me it looked like frustration, but I still don't know why and if I was right?? Grts from Vienna 😏

In regard to the mustangs; the reality is that they are utterly stolen from their homes and family, traumatizing whole tribes! The bureaus/ gov kidnap them to steal their land to use for human use! THEY, the wild horses don't just keep having foals. They foal when the land is bountiful. I so wish it completely illegal to round up wild horses! It's disgusting, sick, and violating to these creatures.
@Done123abc26 күн бұрын
To the Mustang girl in Florida, you’ve got it all wrong. I live out west! There’s plenty of land and there’s plenty of food. Every time they pull the horses off they’re replaced with cattle and sheep.! The horses were federally protected years ago, and the BLM usurped that law and tells that story, so the public is OK with it . BLM (which is now a de facto agency, since the Chevron defference has been overturned ) does it for money. End of story. However Thank you for caring for them.

my issue is a little different the horse i ride has trust issues i just don't understand why rosie my lease uses me as safety she will hide behind me like a kid that is scared of something the issue is rosie is getting harder and harder when scared to keep her off my back not jumping on me she goes sideways into me and starts full body shaking her front shoulder is pressed up against my back the only time rosie will leave food as well if i walk away i can't leave someone her and walk away from her about 7 times she has ignored the rider and took them threw the barn and stops right be side me i go back in she follows if i take a different horse for a ride rosie my lease jumps the paddock fence all my life i have been told horse treat me differently i have autism as well kzbin.info/www/bejne/onSvhmyXhZqbgdU as soon as i walk away she zig xags

The biggest thing wrong is using a metal bit. It is NOT neccessary !!! It causes pain. Metal and horses DO NOT mix. You aren't going to have an animal, or even another human being's trust by using pain to get them to do anything for you. I didn't see too many. The mention of spurs also made me cringe. Metal, horses-a huge no- no ! You get a lot further with sugar than with vinegar.
