Pollarding can refer to both the removal of all a trees leafy branches, or all of its branches and limbs entirely, leaving only trunk. In neither circumstance does it form a crotch or cause multi-stemming, that's just natural tree formation. Pollarded trees have chunky trunks and limbs, and wispy thin new growth sprouts, but lack mid level scaffolding branches. Your tree looks absolutely awesome, but as a normal, natural tree, tbh. It's technically okay for certain trees, but it still causes some amount of stress for them. Stress the engineering term, trees obviously don't have an internal experience of distress or discomfort.

As a manager of an ancient woodland, I'm very proud to hear Grian talk about coppicing and pollarding. You can also propagate coppice-capable trees by layering them, which allows small branches to form new roots and become its own tree a few years down the line.

@personperson.7744 Layering is a specific way of cutting a branch, where you leave a layer of bark intact. You can then fold that tree down to the ground and peg the end, so it stays in contact with the ground. This is what allows them to regrow and help rejuvenate older trees. In theory, a tree can live indefinitely so long as it is coppiced every so often. Hazel likes being coppiced every 7 years. Willow can be as short at 5 years. You can also coppice oak, but that works on a 60 year cycle.

@personperson.7744 Mm, yeah! Some big trees start sprouting branches that droop to the floor. Trees know how to keep themselves in balance naturally, and especially in Beech trees, this will involve bringing branches down to form more supports and roots, or dropping limbs entirely. After a certain point in a trees life, when they get too big, it's more efficient for them to grow a branch downward and develop more roots than it is to grow more of the canopy. As Grian said, when branches split, they're usually roughly even and make up the thickness of the parent branch. At least that's the general idea in most trees.

Depends on the tree! Some species can even only be cut during specific times of years/after a bloom like hydrangeas!

Not sure about better or worse for them, but most cases I've seen it has been natural (hurricanes do as hurricanes do) so it is a survival mechanism. In other words, I don't know if it makes them better or worse off, but it isn't bad, per se. And it also helps with safety, as shorter trunks are less likely to blow over and take a chunk off your house.

It is used where I am but we don't let the new branches grow big. The new branches are pruned as closed to the trunk again and used to build tools. That means we have very big trunk with something looking like spiky hair on them 😂

Grian, just a little wee bit of a tip: Mud allows for hoppers to collect 100% of the output of the sugarcane farms., since sugarcane can be planted on top of mud. That allows you to compact the design even more.
