My daughter is studying in a music school, in the 7th grade. Just today she received a task to learn and play this nocturne (training takes place remotely (not at school, but at home) due to covid and therefore almost all alone, without teacher (parsing) and I found your video, which will help a lot now!) How happy is your video so comes! You are so wonderful and explain everything in detail! Thank you very much!!!

Hello Kronoseonok, thank you for your beautiful message! It makes me very happy that this lesson came at just the right time for you as your daughter learns the Grieg Notturno remotely. These are difficult times not having a teacher in person. It is a pleasure and a privilege to be able to help especially during the challenges of Covid 19 social distancing. I send you all best wishes, and a successful and gratifying experience learning this beautiful piece!

Thank you Sally. Your interpretation of this song when you play it is so touching and eloquently played. I am an amateur pianist who is learning this song for the first time. I appreciate how you explained different sections of it and how to nail that heart beat which plays throughout the song. Your unique way of structuring each phase of it helps tremendously understanding a very complex song. What a beautiful way you unwrapped this song so we can all appreciate Grieg's genius.

Your inspirational thoughts bring tears to my eyes! Seriously, your words provide inspiration and comfort by reminding me to focus on the positive things in life. I very much appreciate the emotion and the heartfelt words you shared at the end of this video. I am in a dark, low time in my life after being recently laid off from a company I had been with for over seventeen years. It's been a challenge to stay positive and not let the situation get the best of me (feeling worthless, unwanted, etc). And your statements about life, beauty, staying connected with nature, etc, are all so very encouraging and appreciated! This music is truly transcendent, reaching out across time and space. It seems like our society and our culture is being torn apart by petty differences, bitterness, and an almost tribal hostility between differing factions. But the sentiments that you share in this video are a stirring reminder that there are far more important things in life. I sincerely thank you for this. You have literally made my day.

@@minoracademy Hello Minor Academy, thank you for your requests. The Canción by Manuel de Falla is a beautiful and haunting work which I will consider doing in the future. Balakirev's Islamey is an extremely difficult and virtuoso piece. Comparable to Stravinsky's Petrouchka, these are works I played in my youth and do not anticipate playing again. When giving any comprehensive tutorial, it is essential for me that the pieces are memorized and fluently in my fingers. Best regards to you and your son.

Thank you - I can really tell by your playing and your words that you have the heart of an artist. its great to see someone analyzing the chord changes and structure behind the music as well. thats one of the most rewarding parts of studying a new piece of music to me. Hope to see more videos in the future - Chopin Etude 7 in C# minor or anything Scriabin gets my vote :)

What a beautiful lesson, as always with you Sally! You are a wonderful teacher and the emotion you put into your lessons is rare to find, yet makes them so much more enjoyable engaging. I especially liked what you said about that final "Nightingale" theme being like a memory that just comes and goes, before the closing chords. Almost brought me to tears, in fact. I'd like to share my own interpretation on one section of the piece too, as I think you may appreciate it. When the opening theme comes back after the middle section, I like to voice the chromatic bass line loudly (while keeping it understated in the beginning) for the B and Bb, before quieting it down when the melody comes in on the A. In my mind I see it as an emotional outburst that gets comforted by the melody, like loving caress that calms down that crying out chromatic descent. Thank you for the lovely lesson, there are definitely many aspects of your teaching that I will be trying to apply to my own playing of this masterpiece. Hope you and your family are doing will during these weird times we find ourselves in!

Hello Jora, I am so moved and grateful to read your beautiful words! Thank you for the generous things you said about the lessons being engaging and enjoyable. I adore this music, and it really is a privilege to make the lessons and companion charts. I loved your imaginative scenario after the recapitulation describing the emotional outburst of the bass being "comforted" by the A of the soprano melody. This is just wonderful! It really is a never-ending field of discoveries for us communing with the music. In these strange times and challenges of Covid 19, music has become all the more cherished and foundational for me. I'm sure you feel the same way. I wish you much joy and fulfillment on your journey with the piano. Many blessings to you.

Definitely! I'm going to. Came out of a period of burnout last year, and am ready to try and come back to so much music. It'll be so interesting, since I won't be playing it the same as was done as a grade 9 student. :)

For sure! I had that experience with Debusy's Arabesque 1 last year. That was just in the start of coming back. And this Grieg piece gave me so many of the feelings you describe here. So much mystery and wonder. That's what attracted me in the first place as a music student back then. That nightingale section is so mysterious and graceful all at the same time. All the sevenths/9ths etc and harmonies between, fleshing the piece out. He must've been pleased with composing this. It's great to revisit it and find the review so much easier than the process of learning it from scratch. That was fun, but coming back to polish/refine it further, and then performing it eventually. It will make a lovely contrast to the two new uber difficult pieces I'm working on now. Will put a video up once I have it securely in hand.

My piano teacher played me this last night and wants me to learn... I'm like wow that's a masterpiece out of my depth and I'm watching your video and like hmmm wonder if I can play I have your emotion but not so good with the technicalities wow
@SallyChristianMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ema, thank you for your thoughtful and sincere comment! You bring up a very important subject. I always tell my students that if they love a piece, they should try to learn it. By the same token, if they don't like a piece, it's always going to be a struggle for the student and the teacher. Of course, the challenges should be mostly within your reach, but having to stretch in this way for a piece you adore is worth giving it a try. Begin with the hands alone, and lots of slower practice. If you still find it's technically too advanced for you, put it away for 6-9 months and then come back to it. When I was a young student, I always wanted and attempted to learn the pieces I was "wild" about. My passions kept me going until my hands could manage it technically. Sometimes it took years, but it was always worth the effort. It sounds to me like you have strong feelings for this masterpiece, and I encourage you to approach it with patient, consistent, and accurate practicing. :-) I am pulling for you!

What a magnificent interpretation, I am speechless! I have recently found your channel and I must say that I am trully impressed. May I be so bold of asking, but could you do videos, in the same kind as this one, of the Op. 28 by Chopin? I'd really to like understand the dinamics and interpretations of the n°. 4, 7 and 20 Preludes. They are all fairly short, so it's easy to memorize, but I know that they should be played in specific ways, they are not as simple as them seem to be, and thats what intrigues me the most. Anyway, keep up with the excellent work! Greetings from Brazil!

Your words of encouragement to continue with this work are very much appreciated! Obrigado!

Hi Sally 😊 you play it so beautifully, any tips on how to play the left hand while doing trills? I really struggle with this!
@SallyChristianMusic6 жыл бұрын
Hello Jodie, thank you for your nice words about my playing. Regarding your question, if you are asking to how to play the left hand softly while the right hand is playing the "Tremolo" trills (as I call them) in this piece, it will be the same technique as I talked about in the opening measures of the piece. Use your entire arm and gently "pulse" each eighth note. I hope this helps, and best wishes to you!
@jodiem89745 жыл бұрын
SallyChristianMusic thank you sally! Months later I have mastered the trills thank you so much ❤️ I am now struggling with the balance of the piece, I struggle to keep the left hand quiet while playing the melody of the right hand. Any tips? :)

You are welcome! :) That is another I used to play. But I learn everything by ear, and after listening to several recordings, I discovered it was learned wrong - minus a couple of left-hand notes in the fortissimo chord section. Dropped it, but it's on the list of pieces to be picked up and learned right next time around. :) BTW, your touch is beautiful, and so is the tone of this piano.

According to Arthur Rubinstein, Sergei Rachmaninoff regarded Grieg's piano concerto as the most perfect of all (piano concertos), not an opinion Rubinstein necessarily shared, but considered with respect.

Hello msotil, thank you for sharing this most fascinating and illuminating statement from Rachmaninoff! Such powerful words from a giant that many people would agree with, or seriously ponder at the minimum.

Thank you for your kind reply, dear Mrs Christian. I found the interview where Arthur Rubinstein recalls Rachmaninoff's enthusiasm for the Grieg Piano Concerto: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGTCoGprfq2jpas It is at about 0:10 (the beginning ). By the way, I love all of Grieg's piano music. Back in the mid 70's I discovered Grieg's Lyric Pieces on a LP by Emil Gilels (sadly only about 20 pieces out of 66) and I've been in love with the music ever since.

Hello Miss Capri, I can hear how you resonate so much with this piece by the mood you captured and the tender way you shaped the right hand melodic lines. Congratulations on getting the piece so quickly back under your hands and memorized as well! This will be a piece you will enjoy playing for years to come. Lovely instrument, too.
@MusicalMissCapri6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Sally! It was one of these pieces I was very sorry to leave behind in my student years moving on to the next level. My teacher never encouraged hanging on to pieces for fun when new music took up all of the time. So I'm glad to have picked it up again, and it is definitely a keeper. There's quite a story behind getting this new instrument, too. It was a new discovery several months ago, and I finally broke down and got one. All because a piano was not working at a studio where I accompany dance classes.

Hi Miss Capri, you are welcome! Thank you for bringing up an important point. While it is true that much of our time will be spent on learning new pieces, I recommend that we also have a few pieces we like to play memorized and "ready to go." There is nothing more frustrating than to be asked to play something and have nothing current. I try to dedicate one hour a week for Review Day to be sure to keep these handful of pieces in performance shape!
