Lugansky turns this workhorse of the piano concerto literature into pure poetry. All of the Lugansky trademarks are there - crisp, clear, virtuosic playing. But it's more than these things alone. His incredible interpretive gift brings out the soul of this great music. He is never afraid to hold back in order to benefit the greater collaborative effort between soloist and orchestra. No doubt, with his unparalleled technical skill he could have given this piece a more trite, banal reading, but he does not. Instead, he finds deep meaning in seemingly every phrase. To listen to this definitive interpretation of an old friend has been a revelatory experience.
