Grieving father to Trump: I'm pissed

President Donald Trump heard a series of heartfelt stories and pleas for change during a meeting Wednesday with people affected by some of the nation's highest-profile deadly school shootings, including the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre and last week's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Andrew Pollack, a father of one of the 17 victims who died in last week's Florida shooting, said he was speaking Wednesday because his daughter couldn't.
"We as a country failed our children," he said. "This shouldn't happen."
He asked how it was that America could protect its airports, its concerts, its embassies and even the elevators at the Department of Education, but not its schools.
"How many schools, how many children have to get shot? It stops here with this administration and me. I'm not going to sleep until it is fixed. And Mr. President, we'll fix it. Because I'm going to fix it. I'm not going to rest," he said.
"My beautiful daughter, I'm never going to see her again. It's simple. Let's fix it," he said.

I'm 22 and Australian and I will tell you this. At school we never even learned about guns, half of us didn't know what a real life gun looked or felt like. Besides the police and armed forces I can not name one person that has ever held a gun for any other reason than to admire it at a gun show or when they were in Army Cadets. Guns simply do not exist in the Australian society. I can not speak on behalf of all of Australia as I live in a small town down South. But I will say that the day I meet someone who actually owns a gun in Australia for the purpose of self defense whom are not in the police or armed forces will be the day I become very afraid.

What's good, I'm a junior right now in high school, and I can tell you for certain that whatever people are saying about schools and about things of that nature and that pertain to the problem at hand aren't true. I want nothing more than to get the hell out of high school so that I, diploma in hand, can go to college and put more good stuff in my brain, and then get the hell out of there and have a career, buy a house, get married, do all the things adults want to do. Take me, for instance. I want to major in Broadcast Journalism or Communications, work with a handful of different news agencies, with the intent of going to one place in particular, the name of which I will not disclose for the future. The thing is, it's difficult to do that knowing that someone, anyone that's a student or even a teacher or a custodian, can come to school with a weapon and start opening fire. As a member of the generation of kids and teens who are impacted most by this tragedy, I can say for certain that we're not out to take guns away from the people; that's a whole other issue, and frankly, if they did that, a lot of different demographics would just up and raise Hell. What we DO aim to do is get right to the minds of our lawmakers and say "look, get your heads out of your holes, just say 'no' to the money the NRA wants to give you, and let's get right down to it and make our schools a safe place to work and to study." I don't care about the conspiracies that are going around regarding this and other horrible incidents of its ilk. Until someone I trust 100% tells me that one or all of them were faked, I will choose to believe that each and every one of them occurred, as well I should. Thank you.

I disagree if you are saying that anyone who wants to buy a gun must undergo psych testing. The medical industry is a business and most of their opinions are subjective as opposed to objective based on medical evidence. Would you like it if you had to get psych screening prior to getting a drivers license, even though you have no psych issues? What if the doctor did not really know what they were doing and decided you had mental health issues and that kept you from getting a license. Would you like it?

Samuel Zeif got only one thing wrong, but given his state of grief it can be forgiven. The shooting he refers to in Australia took place in 1996 not 1999. But he was absolutely right about the rest of it. Since the Port Arthur Massacre as its become known. Australia has had zero mass shootings within its borders. & yes people still can get guns in Australia. You have a strict series of checks (background, mental health ect.) to go through. & you can't buy automatic or semi automatic weapons. Concealed weapons are also forbidden. As are things like knifes, martial art weapons, swords (unless they're prop replicas), grenades ect. But a lot of people who live in the country own rifles, shotguns ect. to help protect their livestock. I've lived in Australia for over 15 years after moving here from America as a teen. & must say I feel safer here because of the strict gun laws, then I ever did in America. At least I know if I get into an argument here that no ones going to shoot me.

My 34 year old brother has had his gun licence for years, for hunting and camping, and recently got court driving while disqualified and they took his gun licence and guns off him for 5 years. Just for driving to work without a licence. I feel very sad for America. The situation they're in is a very long process but I believe it can change= peace Jess 💗
