Here's a little lore from Attempt #10: "Reed Sorenson died on the final lap of the 2007 Daytona 500. The official cause of death was ruled as g-forces exceeding human tolerance limits. Sorenson was the first fatality in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series competition since Dale Earnhardt in 2001. Sorenson's car flipped sixteen times at a high speed, faster than any other flip in NASCAR. Centrifgual forces on the car were too much for Sorenson's body to handle. Safety crews found him with blood coming out of his eyes, ears, and nose, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, many rallied for the early mandatory implementation of the Car of Tomorrow. However, tests showed that Sorenson's chances of survival in the Car of Tomorrow were about the same as in the Car of Yesterday, and that the speed of the roll and the centrifgual force on the car made the situation unsurviveable. Others began rallying for NASCAR to eliminate Daytona and Talladega from the schedule completely, which NASCAR rejected, stating that the accident could have happened at any track on the circuit, even short tracks. Further testing showed that, had the accident occurred in the Car of Tomorrow, it actually would have caused the car to crumple from abnormal aerodynamic forces, cracking the rollcage and crushing the driver to death. Therefore, NASCAR announced that some of the safety features of the Car of Tomorrow would be implemented into the current car, and the Car of Tomorrow itself would be scrapped, especially after testing showed a reduced ability to pass and the rear wing serving to lift cars off the ground and render the roof flaps useless."
