Fantastic BTS -- I'm curious what's the budget and type of client you're doing on a shoot like this? Decent sized crew, lots of gears (and options available) for 2 interviews. I like to always be able to balance client expectations and budget by showing examples: this is what you can get at this price point versus this is what you get a this one. Thanks!
@GriffinConway2 жыл бұрын
I should do a pricing video at some point. This shoot was part of a 3 day shoot so it’s hard to break out pricing for just this interview. I charge a flare DP day rate which includes me and my gear. The other guys on set have a flat day rate as well.
@SuperCleary2 жыл бұрын
@@GriffinConway Thanks Yes I'd love for you to dig in and break that out. I think one of the hardest things for me is understanding how to breakout from being a one-man-band on everything and understanding how to price a whole crew.

Love your videos, thank you for the insights! For further redundancy with audio, I like to split up my tracks even further pushing a lav to one camera and a shotgun to another. This way if one camera/card fails at least you have a backup audio file.

An amazing great work ! Beyond sound and picture quality, we can see the confidence on the client and talents faces. They all seem relaxed, while focused, and never tensed... a proof of the good job you produced. The crew also appeared invested but on a steady pace, no one rushing for some random reason. All this positive atmosphere, you have built along the set-up, showed into the final results... bravo !

Hey Ryan, I get a lot of DM's from people asking to come out to set for a day or two and observe/learn. Great stuff as always. I'm always a bit scared of lav audio. I get so much clothing scratchy sound with it when it's hidden. I'm using a Sennheiser ME 2 which has a bit of a strange capsule on it. Wondering if I should grab an MKE 2 to help avoid this issue?
@En1gm4tic2 жыл бұрын
A tip I've picked up is to attach the mic to something that makes the most noise when rubbing up against it. For instance, if you have a choice between skin and a rough or generally noisy garment, attach the microphone to the garment, so that skin rubbing will have the least amount of impact. If the subject is moving fairly quickly, use a mini dead cat to reduce wind noise through the garment. I hope these help - remember the gear doesn't make everything, it's mostly the technique!
@ScottBell2 жыл бұрын
@@En1gm4tic Thanks for the tip. I find that a person's chest hair ends up being just as noisy as the clothing. It's mostly what I'm picking up in the audio. I've tried the moleskin and tape sandwich methods, but both have been pretty unsuccessful.
@WhenWillILearn2 жыл бұрын
I screwed myself with this same setup, usually works perfectly and it did for most of the interviews by one guy had a recently shaved chest and the lab audio sounds like someone took a wire brush to it every time he moved
@En1gm4tic2 жыл бұрын
@@ScottBell in this instance, where the skin/hair and shirt have the same problem, you might have to use under the collar and instruct them not to move as much. When going to the collar, try to avoid the center and go to the "bottom left" or "bottom right". In extreme cases, you may need to tape to both the skin and the shirt to ensure the least amount of movement possible, but you risk showing it to the camera due to how weird it will be while moving.
@GriffinConway2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Scott! I have the ME2 and the MKE2 is way, way better IMO. I never like the audio out of the ME2 and the larger capsul makes it harder to hide.

@GriffinConway2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kamal! Nice to see you here again bro! With the C70 I usually use the speedbooster so it's like "fake full frame" haha. But if I was using the standard adapter I would go 35mm A cam / 50mm B cam as a starting place and then adjust from there as the shot requires.

Awesome tips! One thing I did pick up was that you shot both wide and close up at f2. I doubt anyone but a person who does these will notice, but the background bokah is different in that case between the two shots. Have you ever considered shooting closeups at e.g. f4 and wides at f2 to match the bokah? Again, nitpicking but just something I noticed. good...no...EXCELLENT job otherwise!
@GriffinConway2 жыл бұрын
