His first time through he just wasn’t doing well physically and functioning in the environment as it existed. The money was good obviously but during the period of time when he worked the normal full time schedule of the day it was just wasn’t a good fit for him. If I remember correctly he was dealing with various injuries from the road and was self medicating through it with pain pills and large quantities of vodka. And at that point in time in the roughly two years he’d spent in the WWE on the main roster he’d been the champion or involved in the feuds for the championship for pretty much the entire time and the schedule that came with that role was immense - had to be on every international tour and so on thus always on the road. If you’re a private person who likes to be in nature and check out for periods of time constantly being on the road and having people want things from you would be a bad fit. And lucky for him eventually he got to come back and get the extremely favorable schedule that he wanted but was denied when he had talks to return in 2007 or so. And the accommodations he eventually got later on is about as good of a deal one could ever hope to have gotten and he’s gotten to spend like ten plus years back making truck loads of cash the entire time. In the end it all worked out pretty well for him in the end even though for various points in time it looked iffy. Whether one likes him or not can’t help but have some level of respect for all he’s been able to do.
