@@tehgerbil yeah i mean my take has always been its a good game, far from great, but no immediate sequel to a masterpiece like Deus Ex wouldve ever been good enough, and the only reason DX2 gets so much crap and HR doesnt is time. they're about equally simplistic and "casualized" or console-friendly, but DX2 came out right away and HR came out long past anyone gave up on getting any more deus ex at all, so it's hyped when DX2 is maligned, when both deserve appreciation for how good-not-great they are.

I never had a problem with the game when it came out, besides not really liking the way they changed augs, but it wasn't a huge deal. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Same with Thief: Deadly Shadows, people gave it a lot of hate but it's one of my favorite games along with the first two.

IW gets a ton of shit and I never got it. I mean I understand on a base level that it simplified the DE formula and people see it as talking down to them and repeat "accessible" as if it's a slur. But while I can understand the base comments I don't get why there's such a venomous hatred for this game. Because it's still good, not the best game in the world but a perfectly capable game with its own pros and cons. I personally don't see it being "accessible" as the worst thing in the world, as good as the original DE is it's also a massive hurdle to want to ever play it again, whereas this accessibility makes IW immediately replayable. It still offers a wealth of options and has a pretty awesome coat of paint for the time it was released. TL'DR? - IW may not be a perfect game but I think people who hate it only do so because they have a romanticized, nostalgia-tinged view of the original.

I like the addition of Rumble Roses to the intro. Beneath all the smut there's a really underappreciated wrestling game, mechanically. It's definitely one of the better efforts from Yuke's. Fun fact: the character designer for Rumble Roses and Rumble Roses XX, Shiro Kotobuki, became a commercial artist and eventually entered the games industry after he was paralyzed from the neck down due to a car accident in his early 20's. He taught himself to draw digitally on a tablet with nothing but his mouth, clenching the stylus in his teeth. He unfortunately passed away unexpectedly in June, 2016.

Some great songs from the Trickster album in the game, including S+M. Back then in the old gaming mags, I remember reading at least once a year about "the death of PC gaming". The ps1-2 / xbox era was such a huge leap from earlier generations that I think there was a certain anxiety among pc devs regarding the relevance of pc gaming. Consoles which were reaching graphical parity while being less expensive and more user friendly. At least thats the only explanation I can get my head around. Whats really sad is thinking if they had stuck to their guns and expanded upon what made the first one great.

Over the last couple of days, I have watched a number of your videos. They're interesting, well edited, well paced, thoughtful, genuinely funny and thoroughly enjoyable. More than once I've been surprised by the end of a video, because it didn't feel like an hour or more passing in the slightest. Your channel specific "lore"/reoccuring cast/youknowthewholespiel and especially your brand of humor feel unique, never forced and just plain authentic. I've rarely seen a channel, that catches me off guard and actually makes me laugh out loud as much as your content. Beyond that, you always give the reviewed content a fair and thorough shake, really trying to understand it and mentioning when you're not sure about something. That only increases the authenticity of it all. To be honest, when I encountered my first historical context excursion surrounding a game, I wasn't quite sure about it, but very quickly I started looking forward to it. Even with games, that have a well reported history, you still dig up interesting details and anecdotes I've never heard about. Genuinely fantastic content, keep it up. Also, your choice of games in some instances further give off the vibe, that I - as a viewer - kind of stumbled upon this niche, underground little channel, like it wasn't recommended to me by a quasi omniscient algorithm. No, my refined tatste lead me here. And I have, once again, outdone myself in uncovering the true gems in this mess. That's just really funny to me.

I think it was Errant Signal's video from 2011 that helped to define Invisible War as a failure in my eyes, where he compared the limited ways of tackling different rooms, the consolised interface and the rushed for a Christmas launch date (plus those lengthy scenes of having to give up your weapons in certain areas, with the same over-explanation of why it had to be done and that Jensen would get them back upon leaving the area), very negatively to the first game. So it has only taken twelve years to hear a much needed counterargument defence of it! Thanks Grim!

No. It one hundred percent is total biscuits fault. He never ever shut the fk up about deus ex being his favourite game, and how much of a masterpiece it is to him. The only thing he actually talked about more than that, is how BAD invisible war is, and he'd go on multiple tangents, even in videos entirely unrelated to deus ex. Given his immense popularity in gaming industry before he popped his clogs, bit the dust, stopped breathing, a LOT of his little small brained fanbase took his word as gospel and stopped thinking for themselves entirely. Much like you will find with any fan base of any popular youtube critic of any kind. The sad people watching them actually adopt the opinions of the critic as their own. Its a very strange phenomenon, and absolutely incredibly sad on levels hitherto unknown. A bunch of pathetic human beings that have decided that this one person they watch on KZbin will henceforth decide what they do or don't like. Absolutely incredible. 😅 but yeah, it's definitely TB (cynicalbrit) that caused most of the widespread and perpetual/ longlasting hated towards invisible war. Given the fact he never fcking stopped crying about it, until, fortunately he wasn't given a choice but to shut up.

I still have a copy of this. It's floatin' around here somewhere... To answer your question about the universal ammo, it's basically a nanomaterial gel capsule that contains all the raw materials for the various ammo types (chemical explosives and propellants included). It's assembled by the weapon itself using a built-in microfactory in the weapon itself. So the 10mm pistol manufactures each bullet as needed from the Mako BluGoo; same with each stun dart, rocket, etc. That's my homebrewed explanation that I literally just rambled out in the past four minutes, but it does make sense in-context.

I have a soft spot for this game as it was my first Deus Ex game, it has problems but even now I will still occasionally go back and play through it, and I still remember exact enemy placement in maps. Interesting to hear your opinions on it. Good video.

same experience for me. i remember torrenting this game randomly when it came out in 2003 while i was still a broke middle schooler. its story that tied in a bunch of conspiracies that i loved reading about made me an instant fan. because i never played the first game, i did not know how much more simple gameplay was compared to the first, so i throughly enjoyed it. i remember playing the first game a few years later when i was able to afford it in high school (for some reason there were no pirated copies of this game back then), and realizing how much deeper it was. i still love this game as well..the ending were very very interesting as well..especially the omar ending, that one definitely piqued my imagination..

I remember when Invisible War came out and people complained about all the gameplay changes... THAT THE PEOPLE ASKED FOR. My college roommate complained about the universal ammo, and then I had to remind him of the AIM chat log we had about the original game where he complained there were too many ammo types and he would rather have one or two. Invisible War was a fine sequel: disgruntled gamers are the real problem

2:09:15 This was probably the first large scale, industry-wide design change for any consumer product that created actual nostalgia for me, and I had just started high school. It was even worse when it went from box, to shell around double-wide DVD case, to just the double-wide case, to normal DVD case like console games.

a few Invisible War favorites: 1. When Billie comes after you with the spiderbots in the Area 51 memory, she doesn't actually appear until you step forward. Looking around in place is safe. Preparing your own spiderbot ambush is safe. You can have SO MANY spiderbots stockpiled by this point. 2. Slapping ragdolls with a strong melee weapon makes them wig out real good. Picking up ragdolls freezes them in their current position until you let go. Combine these to turn people into abstract sculpture. 3. Punching robots into being your friend. 4. Fire.

Deus Ex Invisible War was my first jump into the franchise back on the original Xbox and I've never looked back. Maybe I was too much of a kid to realize how simple the concept was, but the freedom the title provided me as a player to tackle problems with stealth, non-lethal, lethal or otherwise was absolute awesomeness for me. It was and is a good game, and if people don't like that, tough cookie, I'm happy to got to enjoy, and still get to enjoy a title for what it is, a good game.

Funny how appealing the world of the initial deus ex is, even with all the horror it’s trying to show you, it’s almost completely wholesome and nostalgic. Ironically it’s warm and inviting, and feels lived in, more so than the current set up. Idk if anyone else feels that disconnect, but I think that’s a big portion of the love for the original, feels inviting to re-enter, like watching the sopranos again, or seeing a familiar episode of seinfeld. Very comforting

@@itsdabees Not sure I can be, as I played Dues Ex for the first time last year, and was born in '92. There are certain pieces of media that give off that "nostalgia" feel in a very specific way. "This must be the place" by the talking heads has that as well, just a very specific way of making something warm, but in a "I lost something" sort of way. I would say Dues Ex does the same.

As a kid, I bought Invisible War on release because of solid reviews. My buddy had Deus Ex and I'd borrowed it, but it didn't really grab me - I only got through Libery Island and put it away. So I got to experience IW with a pretty limited grasp of "what Deus Ex was" and it swept li'l cyberpunk me off my feet. The "immersive-sim-lite" options blew my mind, it introduced me to Kidneythieves, atmospherically resonated and gave me just enough space to run around and fall in love with night-time-sci-fi vibes in general. It's one of my favorite, most nostalgic games from childhood and I've loved it since. I went back and really gave Deus Ex a chance, but I'd gotten there about 5 years too late. More modern shooters made DX1 just kinda feel clunky and unexciting to me as a teenager. I could see the appeal and it's still a game I run around in from time to time these days, but Invisible War was really always my go-to DX game. As the years went by, things got weird. People got easier and easier on DX and harder and harder on Invisible War. I stopped talking about IW because people stopped having conversations about it - they'd become so taken by the memes that simply mentioning IW would make me sound like I had no idea what I was talking about. But, of course, it always turned out they'd never actually played it (or, as the reviews you shared - barely finished the opening sequence), because it was so "awful". I do still have a lot of respect for DX1, but I have always been pretty sure that Invisible War was a fine game, of its time, and mostly worth a try for people who like Action-RPG-shooters from the early 00s. I've been pretty sure I wasn't just looking at it through nostalgia goggles. And I've been looking forward to a retrospective that wasn't just echoing memetic trash talk. This was a really fun, very warm-fuzzy nostalgia vid for me in a ton of ways. You did real dang good. Next time people try to talk about how trash my childhood cyberpunk love is, I'm gonna just share this and let it do the talking. Thanks, GrimmyB.

One of the biggest confusions to me with Invisible War is why there isn't a mod that ports it to the original game's engine, merging the segmented levels (with some quality of life geometry changes) and reverts to more of the original game's mechanics. It'd take a lot of elbow grease to do it well (I'm sure there are abandoned attempts at this), but I think it'd help rehabilitate the game a lot.
@-Zakhiel-
@-Zakhiel- Жыл бұрын
I don't think this is possible... You can't just port maps from one engine to another. Plus they would also have to remake all the models... Basically demaking all the game. It would several if not more than 10 years for a group of amateurs to do that.
@kareliask
@kareliask Жыл бұрын
@@-Zakhiel- Thanks, I definitely used the word port incorrectly. While it would have to have been a years long project, the community has shown a lot of staying power with (and continued demand for) certain mods, but for a game which many replay once every couple of years since no other title offers a similar experience, it feels as though that similar experience is lurking in Invisible War's framework. It doesn't need to be particularly faithful, the weapons and enemies could be substituted with things already in DE's engine, especially at first. The biggest issue would be the scripting, which is the bane of most mods that have some nice levels and not much else. All we get instead are scant total conversion projects that are conceptually uninteresting to most people who enjoy the original. It's definitely too late for such a project to exist now, but that it hasn't been one of the long-term ones alongside TNM and Revision feels like an absence. People remade Thief's engine in Doom 3 just to play better versions of Deadly Shadows' levels, for goodness sake, hehe.

What confuses ME is why nobody has ported Deus Ex into Skyrim yet. Seriously, what's the holdup? The engine is perfect and this community is so passionate and full of talent I reckon it could be completed in a couple years. Just shove Skyrim into Invisible Mankind or whatever and dub over the dialogue with recordings of farts. Skydeus Ex: Human Fartolution

That's pretty answer. It's because the engine isn't the greatest issue with the game. There're patches for the closing/reopening of the window, if that bothers you.
