Wow! I am incredibly humbled with tears of joy watching this video. So funny! We were just kids figuring out how to make a video game at a pioneering time when game knowledge and tech wasn't broadly accessible as it is today. After 30 years, more people have seen this video than have played the game (by an order of magnitude). Grimbeard, you are both a creative genius and a diligent researcher. I can't imagine how much time you've put into making this video. Many thanks to this amazing community of retro adventure game fans preserving the history and finding the stories behind the stories. And a special shout out to Resulka for being the first to figure out the easter eggs in the game and reaching out for the interview. Much gratitude to you all! Karthik

Glad to hear from you Karthik, welcome to Goth Gamer Nation! Learning the story behind this game's creation has been really interesting and inspiring, what you guys managed to pull off was incredibly impressive. I love these stories of people with little experience or resources but a ton of passion and ideas that they need the world to see. I haven't played the game but learning about it and projects like it reminds me not to give up on my own dreams. In that way 30 years later it's still making a difference in people's lives. Grimbeard's choice of topics never disappoints, just one of many reasons why he's without question my favorite video game related channel.

When an industry is still young enough that the rot of the corpos hasn't set in, you'll often see artisans communicating with each other, sharing secrets and tips. Even as just a fan, I was able to chat with Ken Williams of Sierra on a BBS as a young man. It was not unusual for people to actually answer emails and devs and gamers were basically one and the same. These guys were always out to make money and watch their businesses grow, but I think there comes a point when simple commerce becomes twisted and corrupt, and it always seems to strike right when the megacorps start to form.
@xBINARYGODx Жыл бұрын
oh palease, the rot had set in long before this game came out - and the abuse of devs by other devs was not born yesterday. The "rot" is more than just "I dont like this trend".
@Funko77711 ай бұрын
@@xBINARYGODxI mean, yes there were big fish during this time for sure, but it was still a period where most investment institutions severely underestimated the internet and video game industry and consequently lacked the manipulation power seen today. Most small companies were formed with friends who had started as modders and still carried a deep passion that wasn't flayed out of the final product due to whiny investors and out of touch publishers. They did in fact see other devs as fellow explorers in the use of this new technology. There's plenty of stories from this time where kids basically gained ceo positions over night and yet would still go out of their way to provide their self made software engine for essentially free just because they trusted a kid or liked his ides at a new (and potentially a future competitor) company they were starting. This specific example occurred with the first ID tech engine and I believe the original devs of deus ex but it may have been another game. Point is just helping each other wasn't seen as trading corporate secrets. Plus you had Valve creating the core of their company with modders fresh out of high school and of course you had Looking Glass essentially being a party office that still produced some of the most important games of all time. So yeah, companies like SEGA, Nintendo, and Sony were still corporate shit bags but grassroots dev studios really were pretty brotherly amongst themselves because most didn't care about money or competition but instead just wanted to create. This of course led to many going bankrupt but it's a very magic and important period in gaming history. One can't help but think we'd have consistently better releases and more in-touch/receptive devs if they didn't have to answer to micromanaging Corp hacks. That communal characteristic is important for all artists but gets perverted once the sole focus is squeezing every last cent out of customers. Just getting into the industry now or even an internship is ridiculous. There's zero face to face interaction or even phone calls. You are subjected to the will of a faceless corporation that doesn't even fully communicate its wants, goals, annoyances, etc. At least the indie scene is still alive and well albeit a bit over saturated with shit.

I mean, Vicarious Visions' was actually pretty well known to Nintendo fans around the early 2000s since they were an _expert_ port house known for a good amount of impossible ports. Like getting Tony Hawk 2 on the GBA with 3D skaters, or Guitar Hero on the DS. Even their handheld version of Tony Hawk Downhill Jam actually ran a full 3D engine on the GBA. If you weren't a hardcore Nintendo fan, they did the "impossible" Xbox port of Doom 3 too. They were also the first non-Naughty Dog team to handle Crash Bandicoot thanks to their GBA Crash games that utilized pre-rendered sprites a la DKC but also FMV backgrounds for the "run towards the camera" stages. Like, they were real good. Just have to point that out. They may have been attached to loads of licensed stuff, but they did not thumb their noses at the opportunities given to them. It was a genuine blow to the industry that Activision forced them to work on stupid Diablo II Remaster and then just.... smushed them into Blizzard as a support studio for garbage Diablo games. There's a reason many people hope that Microsoft gives them their independence back now that they own Activision. They were a real ambitious jack-of-all-trades studio that always gave 100% and could deliver a great Spider-Man game one year, then a great Crash game the next, and then a great FPS the next. Now I wanna hear about their weird little FMV game they made as a bunch of kids who just called up other developers to borrow their game engines, lol.

Grats on a 100k subs! Hate to harp on the tone police thing but I have no clue what brand you are even trying to make here anymore. Offensive content and mature themes, and we love body horor, but don't say weird things about autism and don't show realistic depictions of sex workers! Do what you want but I and many others would just hate to see you become a breadtuber who has to inject their 'correct' morals in everything. Also as a note, you can't consider yourself punk or even counter-culture and simultaneously align yourself with the co-opted beliefs of a near complete majority of corporations and government officials/departments, as well as trying to limit 'harsh' speech. You do you though, but you just seemed a bit too intelligent to fall for this shit.

Seriously you deserve a much biggee audience, I told a few people about the channel who enjoy longform content/niche games. You have expanded both my knowledge of these stranger games as well as my desire to get a half decent PC to try them out, then I realised most of the games you review could be played on a modern phone if they were made for it, saving me money at thd same time. You’ve got a fresh style which is so rare for gaming channels on youtube, I found you through “I have no mouth and I must scream” as I was listening to the audiobook on YT and your video was there as a suggestion, I subbed after looking in your channel and seeing Max Payne on there! You put so much effort in to yhe visuals but you also have a soothing voice so sometimes I’ll stick a longer video on to fall asleep to or I’ll just be laughing along during the day as your humor is perfectly dark and angry… Also your Co-host(s) are a frigging haunted pug and videogame characters, one date-r*ping you essentially while giving you augmentations against your will 😂 this would by cynical people be compared to say AVGN but even that element is so different of an angle its not comparable in my opinion. Sorry for how long this comment was, I hope you (Grimace Beardington the 3rd) read this comment and feel uncomfortable about the praise, getting a cold sweat imagining someone connects to your opinions and content in any way…😎 STAY GOTH 🧐

Grimmy your Doubles Entendres and Innuendos are positively getting out of hand, you're keeping me on the edge (of my seat) for so long and I can't help but bust out (a chuckle)!

Great video as always lmao, just wanted to say your FO: Tactics video and Noah Caldwell-Gervais' segment on it in his new video have really made me appreciate it as a look into a how a project can fail. The honesty of the devs is also very much appreciated lol

No way! Let’s goooo! Also, if you can provide a list of the instrumentals you use in your vids, that’d be great! It’d be sick to get them on a playlist!

Continuing my personal mission to "like" every one of Grimbeard's (much under-appreciated) videos.

The nü metal references in this episode are off the charts and I am very pleased!
