I remember the second time I saw it. My dad threw it on shortly before he died. I remember being shocked that the movie was better than I remembered. And it felt both long and engaging. So I was also shocked that it's less than an hour and a half! The paranoia really stood out the second watch. I was even like... Dammit, nobody can trust each other, and with good reason! I also remember reading about this game in magazines and I've almost always had a computer a generation too late. But the articles described this game as a true sequel and a new direction for sequels of films. Which never really happened. Anyway, today I'm learning what this game was like. I'll never play it so I'm happy this guy is great at reviews and is reviewing this

As I get older I look back at actors like Kurt Russell with renewed respect. The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, Tang and Cash, Tombstone, etc, etc. The guy oozes cool and never mails in a performance. Even when the movie is trash, Kurt delivers. His performance in the Thing was exceptional.

On a slightly related note, I just respect him for being one of the few actors out there that gets that his political views are separate from his work as an actor and only get in the way of allowing people to enjoy his work. He leans conservative but makes it very clear that he thinks actors who run their mouths about their political leanings are stepping on their own feet. He also adopted his wife's daughter and is very close with her, which is irrelevant, but a nice thing to note.

The reason the "most ominous line" is missing, is because in the film you can see Macready rewinding the tape and recording on the top of the "most ominous line". Most likely not to disencourage the people fighting the thing if the research team fails. So it is not a mistake, it is as it should be by what was showed in the film. ☝🏻😑

I just recall being really annoyed by the trust/transformation mechanics because there were points where you could test a guy, see he's clean, walk four steps down a hall, trip a script trigger, and he'd instantly change into a Thing. It's like they got partway through development before realizing it was going to be *way* more difficult to implement as intended, but they'd already invested super heavily into marketing revolving around those systems so they couldn't just take it out. So what we get is a game that still has the UI elements and basic interactions for those mechanics, but they functionally barely exist.

As a kid it felt much more in line with the idea that no one could be trusted. I found an abandonware iso of the game and played it a few times over. Conceptually the game is awesome and it was so deliciously nostalgic to play again. But especially on the hard difficulty, non necessary followers turn almost instantly when you go around a corner. They 100% didn’t get to realize that mechanic to it’s fullest. Maybe the gods will grant us another game in the modern era with these mechanics fleshed out

One of my favorite boys talking about one of my favorite movies. Thank you dude, your stuff always makes me happy! Edit: Also Grimbo, I think they omitted MacReady's "Nobody trusts anybody now" line from that tape because in the film he rewinds that section, hears it and then records back over it. It's never explained why, but I always assumed MacReady thought it sounded too hopeless, or maybe he wanted to keep some shred of dignity for him and his team. Up to the viewer, but that was certainly a good attention to detail on the dev's part (you know... except for the whole virus and stupid hidden lab stuff).

Good points. I'm sure there could be many competing motivations, I think that's why people find MacReady (and the other characters) nuanced and compelling. They feel real in that regard. Could be a coping mechanism too, as MacReady suspects he doesn't have much time left. Wants a positive mark behind somehow. Now if only we could have played an interesting character like this in the game...
@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 3 жыл бұрын
I’m honestly pissed they killed Childs off and had his body be found at the beginning, used only to highlight the missing MacReady to the informed player. Childs is one of the more enigmatic and competent characters in the movie, a dramatic foil to MacReady due to the very crux of the film and the creature’s greatest strength - the ability to inspire distrust and infighting amongst the group and move undetected. Were it any other mechanism of reproduction, Childs and MacReady could effectively cooperate and direct the rest of the beardy boys to take care of the threat. Instead, its greatest strength is the ability to use the survival instincts and competency of the group and turn it inward on itself in the form of paranoia - making potentially powerful cooperation into deadly antagonism as individuals begin the machinate against each other. Childs and MacReady embody this more subtle form of paranoia, when compared to the other more overt examples of the behavior such as Wilfred Brimley’s character’s violent lashing out and psychotic break. The film ends for a reason with Childs and MacReady silently acknowledging that there’s no more need for the antagonistic distrust - as they’ll both be dead soon regardless, making the competing survival drives moot. (Unless you headcanon this game or the 2011 prequel where hypothetically Marie Elizabeth Winstead could’ve made it to the Russian base in time to send a party to check on the American base before Childs and MacReady froze, I guess) Idk, I guess my point is that Childs wasn’t exactly a throw-away character. He was kinda thematically important to the underlying conflict of the plot and they done him dirty.

I remember playing "The Thing" back in the day. Eventually I came across a boss I just could not kill. If I remember it right, the boss was behind a roller shutter that eventually opened to reveal it. I blasted it with everything I had but it was somehow not enough. To this day I have no idea if I really didn't have enough ammo, it was a bug, or I wasn't hitting the right body parts.

That might have been the second boss he showed off where he tossed a grenade and hit himself? Before the base is detonated and you have to flee to the elevator. Yeah, the boss fights were not much of a highlight for this game. They really don't fit with the tone of the series at all, but they wanted an action-y sort of game and that's what they gave us. Problem is, it was survival horror in a lot of elements, so it didn't really mesh well with the genres they were mixing. There are great examples of that working, like RE4, but this game's controls were a bit too awkward to pull it off effectively. Eventually you realize that either you're going to suffer a lot to get through the game's bullshit boss and environmental segments or you were gonna cheat to see it to the end and the latter is what I went with and felt pretty justified about when I came across the staircase with fire shooting out at every spot and explosives around every corner (and tons of Things dropping out of vents and charging at you...). The game just has so many issues, but it's a neat attempt at making a game out of the movie concept. It just could have gone better.

The movie is actually pretty ambiguous about how exactly someone becomes a host of the thing, it's entirely possible that it does infect people and just systematically overtake their body without their knowledge. As far as I understand the classification of the Thing as an average Joe, it's what is generally called a supercell organism: it somewhat combines the aspects of a multicellular organism and a virus. It infects and injects cells to change the genetic makeup like a virus can. Meanwhile it changes the cells into duplicates of itself and it also archives the genetic makeup of those cells within itself. That last part allows the Thing to shape-shift into variations and combinations of whatever it has assimilated up to that point. In short the Thing's pathology functions mostly like a virus, but unlike a virus it is multicellular and definitely sapient.

Forgot to mention this when I originally watched the video on release but found this on my playthrough a few years ago. If you enable mouse aiming you then lose the damage indicators for the enemies. They are a bracket around the enemy which changes from green to red as they take damage. This is useful as you use bullets till they are red and then they are vulnerable to fire. This is especially useful for the bosses and to conserve both types of ammo. The game refers to this mechanic when it first tells you about the larger things and I remembered it from the console. Even with mouse aiming off you can still use the mouse to look around in the horizontal axis. Aiming would mostly be via auto aim. For most enemies you eventually get a feel for how much bullet damage they need before they are vulnerable to fire and the precision of being able to aim where you want out weighs the damage info. This is especially true for the human enemies and the critters. In boss fights it is useful to know when you have done enough damage so either turning it off for a second to check or turning it off for the boss fights can be useful. Hope this might be useful for anyone doing a playthrough.

Since remakes/remasters are still such a craze this game sure as hell could benefit from one. I liked it at the time, but ho boy did it not quite deliver on it's promises.

@5:49 Woah, the Lamb Chop lady was a real cutie back in the day! My inner small child who remembers her from that dreadful show I was forced to watch in the 90s (and it’s awful theme, “The Song That Doesn’t End”) feels very… confused.

The guy who is infected and kills himself earlier in the game. I thought the fact that he didn't transform was supposed to show that he wasn't infected after all. Though this is later made more confusing by the virus stuff. But I haven't played this game through in a long time.

Freedom Fighters came out the year after The Thing. Great game. Freedom Fighters got a surprise digital release on Steam and GOG during the summer too. Was hoping IO Interactive's new game was going to be a sequel or reboot/remake. But, a 007 game using the current Hitman game engine could be good too.

Man, you are so good at what you are doing. I know you hear that kind of shit 100 times a day, but it's true ! It's been a long time I have not watched one of your unique reviews. They are really amongst the most entertainging out there, if not the very best of them all. This one only confirms it. It is quite admirable how you manage to make such quality content from manure. But I guess it is only logical as manure is a fertilizer ! 😄 Gonna support you from now on

10:05 Sort of. In the bonus footage of the DVD there's a long-form video that goes over interviews with the cast and crew and they talk about the movie. Charles Hallahan said in his interpretation of his character, Norris, that he viewed his character turning down responsibility when offered an authority role as a subconscious fear/suspicion of himself being infected. He said something along the lines of "he knew deep down" and it was his human side trying to avoid that fate. This is just an actor's interpretation and really it's up to the viewer to decide how it works, because the whole movie is vague on a lot of levels to keep the suspense and mystery and it's one of the reasons I love the movie so much. No matter how many times you watch it, you can never fully explain everything, you can only theorize and conjecture what might be the truth. Thing cells operate independently, but a human mind operates as if it were a single individual (with the side of the subconscious mind which operates underneath our conscious mind, often against its wishes). So if "a" Thing (many Things cells, but let's just say it's one individual for sake of simplicity) can perfectly replicate a human, why couldn't it think and act like a human? I can't remember who said it in the interview, but there was also the idea floated about by the cast/crew that Things may leave the human personality to operate however it would normally and then "take over" when it needed to sabotage things or when its existence is threatened (in the latter case, transforming and separating the way Norris-Thing's head does). Maybe the Thing cells didn't activate when they should have to stop Pierce from killing himself. Though why shooting himself in the head would matter if he's been infected, idk. Maybe they hadn't managed to take over all of the cells in time. It's a rapid process, but just being spurted with the cells real quick doesn't generally turn people. It seems to need to be a grievous wound and then the cells take over as quickly as possible and eventually form another human-clone Thing. You can argue it doesn't make sense, and I agree it's a little silly to hear, but with how varied the Thing itself is, and how interpretive the entire movie is meant to be as far as what's conclusive, I think it works just fine.

Actually, I just love so much this movie I had to play the game. When I was kis and saw this movie this was the scariest thing in my life (I already saw Alien, and I was like... meh). But you right it has many big letdowns, annoying glitches and I forgot the whole plot about it nearly instantly, so thank you for bringing it up. I really don't know why they not making a sequel since it was a commercial success (lookalikes Freedom Fighters). I don't think the thing it's a virus, it's mimicking perfectly any being (so actually maybe he wasn't that alien which the Norwegians find, maybe that alien was already just a host for it. BUT At that time when the movie hit the theatres, many critics compare this nobody trusts anybody, and you need a blood test to be sure themes to the AIDS which was a new thing at the era. And AIDS kills people mostly the same way, you don't know who has it until it's late. So maybe the whole virus idea crawling from this. Anyway appreciate your work, never stop. And I really hope some day just saw your video about Silent Hill 2. Merry Xmas!

As a HUGE fan of the movie, it's debatable if a person can be infected by the alien organism. They definitely show that a full grown thing can get you and mimic you perfectly, and it's shown that a smaller alien, the size of a forearm, can as well. One of the scientists does say he believes even a single cell can, given enough time, transform all the cells in a person into the alien organism. It's never addressed if said person would be aware it's happening. Also, it's not a virus, but what is called a super cell organism.

ya know, i can see why you'd dislike it, it's a rough game but i still appreciate it's charm. there's a glitch you can do to clip your camera through any barrier, (it's useless in every way but it's fun to look outside the map) u have to open the companion menu (or weapon menu, i guess) while looking in either direction, but you must do it fast or it won't work
