I started with 'Mechanicum' by Graham McNeil, being that I'm a great Adeptus Mechanicus fan. I then reverted back to the beginning of Horus Heresy series. But my recommendation is to start with WH40K Librarium or WH40k Wiki to get the rough outline of the setting, context, main figures and timeline, and the audiobooks recommendations will naturally follow as you explore.
