naw she didn't practice. She was too busy on the Robot spider. The bigger issue wasn't the mistake, it's how she handled the apology with a non-apology by throwing other people under the bus
@JohnUssher-jk2qo4 ай бұрын
Yep, this, I’m sorry, but in my mind, and as someone who has Dj’d for years, played festivals, and promoted loads of international acts etc etc, the fact that she “outsourced” a 50 minute set to someone else for preparation is an absolute indictment on what this industry has become, and to me, only exemplifies this image of entitled wannabes who haven’t actually mastered their trade. Let her perform to a freakin backing track, or at least hire a professional to Dj in the background, but there is nothing, nothing to redeem from this embarrassment.
@derkohler23804 ай бұрын
what should she have practiced - pushing one button at a time, maybe even when signaled from a console?! f*ck that - the major issue ist, that she is of the opinion to be able to entertain a crowd by "disk jockeying".. what she is clearly not, never was.. and i suppose never will be - because she won't ever put in the effort necessary to return the ca$h she's used to and/or expecting.. that spoiled, presumptuous brat..

As well as not being prepared. Grimes only finished some of the songs 1 hour before her performance and did not check or run through her set before going on. It was ultimately her responsibility. Grimes didn't have any backups; and spent more focus/attention on riding in on the mechanical spider and looking ''cool'', then she did on the music and her actual performance. Blaming not being able to do the math due to the tempo doubling, or correcting things in Rekordbox, blatantly showed that she didn't really know how to use the tech. ( The way Grimes talked down to the audience by telling them it was '' hard to explain due to being a very complex technology'' was a cop out, and pretty condescending) Grimes trying not to accept the blame for her choices was pretty immature, So many smaller, lesser known musicians and Dj's would have Killed to have the opportunity to perform at Coachella. They would have put in the work, time and effort to be properly prepared and professional, and would have handled things better. They also wouldn't be getting paid the 1-2 hundred thousand dollar performance fee that Grimes is rumoured to get. People have also speculated that Grimes seemed drunk or under the influence of drugs during her set, and that she was slurring her words. Grimes has been professionally performing for over 10 years and should have known better.

There's really no discussion to have about Grimes, or what happened, other than, she fucked up, it literally was on her (knowing how to actually DJ, prepping your files yourself, knowing your set, practicing or even learning how to DJ even at the most basic level with or without SYNC), this shines a huge spotlight on what Electtronic music has become on many levels, and this whole Twitch / Influencer miming DJ'ing bs really needs to go the way of the dinosaur, there are very few acts left in the world with real appreciation or integrity in this global scene, having been involved in it my entire adult life and almost 30 years now and counting, I hope this whole wave of 'performers / whatever tf you want to call them', go the way of the dinosaur sooner than later.

I've been in that situation a few times, had to focus my concentration and motor skills to not "crash the bus" so to speak. It was definitely a test of my mettle as a DJ and me as a person. Not that it was always a win or that I was in that state every time. There's been plenty and mostly wins, the times I lost always had a profound and deep lesson that I needed to learn. They stay in the memory more than the rest and I always ended up achieving considerable growth as a repercussion. Hopefully Grimes has the same outcome... eventually 🤷

As a dj since 1998 I'd make sure I knew what to do. Don't hand anything off to anyone. I don't plan anything and I never use cue points....ever. I just set the track to where I need it just like I did with vinyl. In fact I set everything to be as vinyl as possible (that's my personal preference) and then I read the crowd to choose the next track based on crowd response. Mix and match the beats by ear. That's the number one thing when djing at least in electronic music. Many djs don't know how to programs mixes, ride out long mixes, read the room/crowd, mix on the fly, and some rely on the sync button. Hey if you want to use cue points, the sync button and so forth fine, just don't be surprised when something goes sideways because it will.
@kevinvodek4 ай бұрын
She can’t mix by ear plain and simple. So she is no DJ. She used the Sync button instead of her ears and never prepared her own set in Rekordbox. Which is crazy as she is a professional musician apparently.

You are right she is not a DJ. She is actually a producer who makes her own music. There are many good producers who never DJ and apparently DJ'ing was never her gig. DJing a club there is a lot of crowd reading/reacting...something that big is more along the lines of people are paying to come to see the DJ perform and that DJ has a setlist just like a band. And, just like a band there is some wiggle room with a song here and there to mix in.

And from what I saw it wasn't once...it was multiple times to dead air. Worst case she should be able to mix by sound or even just segue mix the songs as they are probably all similar. @@TheEvox81 amen brother, I've also been in that situation and messed up plenty of mixes for one or another reason. I even had all the music I was going to mix with my tracks for an experimental set not read, opera, Gregorian/Indian/Buddhist/Amazonian/Aboriginal chanting, video game tracks... nothing worked. Ended up with my mobile on KZbin hooked up via the headphone jack and any signal I could get on a hill in the Australian bush hours from civilisation. Somehow I turned an epic failure to a massive success and the experiment was a huge hit with everyone at the party, done on the fly with whatever I could get. I later explained to mates that had come and do a bit of video/audio recording what had happened to me and that the set was not what I had planned or practiced. They were totally blown away as they thought nothing had gone wrong and I absolutely killed it like I meant to and I thought it was obvious to everyone (especially them) that I was having major issues. It wasn't until the morning when we were all having a good laugh together that it came out and I explained what had happened. I assumed they clearly noticed and had gone through the battle inside my head with me, so I didn't feel the need to mention it. This is why DJ should learn how to actually DJ. I don't mean play records but she could have had a thumb drive with her tracks and just played by ear. She would have to make sure Master tempo was turned off on the CDJ. It's a pain in the ass but it's doable. She could have also just played her tracks one after the other without really mixing if she was crafty. She also could have actually put her songs on CDs as another contingency plan and mixed by ear. I guess I don't know what it's like growing up in an era where actually DJing my ear is a common place. It blows my mind that people depend on visuals to play audio. I started DJing back in like 99 so I have a lot of experience on many different mediums. She was obviously drunk or she probably would have been able to think faster. Always have a back-up plan especially if you are privileged enough to play on a big stage like that. I don't know who this girl is but evidently she has a big fan base and I'm sure she's going to be okay because she's not depending on a DJ career. From what I understand she's more of a singer-songwriter. If anything this has given her tons of publicity. I'm sure she'll learn from this. I know I have because I've ran into problems with rekordbox. I swear technology is out of control with all the extra features. These companies add more and more to try to sell more product but the features end up getting in the way of basic functionality sometimes. I run into this problem with smartphones. Too many damn features.

Opposite is a true for a lot of great DJs, many of them can't produce worth a lick. She should have done a playback set, not dj. And considering she was DJ'ing she should have had support as backup which was nowhere to be seen. Its just funny all the people throwing under the bus for botching a DJ set when she is not even a DJ. I agree a DJ should learn to DJ. But again she is not a DJ but a producer, who tried to play a DJ set.

I wonder if that "someone else" who did the record prep was left to some AI program to complete. At the end of the day, and Dj Jazzy Jeff will tell you, the first rule is to KNOW YOUR RECORDS. Then, of course, prep your set and practice your set forwards, backward, and blindfolded. Learn how to mix without relying on beat grids; we used to do it with vinyl and have a backup plan. Sometimes cords get loose, the power might trip, drinks get spilled, and sh-t happens, and things can go viral in minutes, and you'll have the infamous #DjFail hashtag embedded with your content for life. Preparation is like 90% of what we do.

The problem was she doesn't know how to mix music with her ears. She relied on the sync button. We can thank Jazzy Jeff for giving people the okay. He should have said you need to learn how to mix with your ears because you're going to need that when the sync button goes out and you have your ears as a backup.

WTF is with the DJs nowadays? I prepare atleast 2 weeks before my set. I mix by ear even on the most recent controllers/mixers/cdj's. It really isnt that hard. And it didn't sound like Grimes were juggling 6 decks. Sounded like she was fiddling with 2. Fail to prepare, Prepare to fail. It is really that simple. I have failed on stage. I owned my mistakes. Grimes just blames everyone and everything else. She is just obnoxious.

If it was she wouldn’t have had tempo issues. Those issues she had could have only happened if she was actually mixing in tracks.

that's why she is relying on all that bs-software: it tells her when to push one button at a time. that's all she is doing. maybe she even selects one or two songs beforehand. but her stage performance could be done by a trained monkey as well..

You don't get out of you bedroom with that level of skills. Stay and learn and practice... 😂 I think a lot of djs (real djs) wanna have the chance to be in front of a big crowd!!! What she did should be done in her bedroom not on a stage!

Of course you're defending her because you clearly do not understand the big oops she had which was followed by her dumb reasons/excuses! Singing, writing songs and producing does not equal a good DJ. This is a clear example of this! She's wack, and she should stop passing herself off as a DJ.

If you don't trust your ears FIRST & FOREMOST, you're the problem. 10 to 1 odds this ain't the first time one of these deeeeeejays failed because they relied on the unartful/artless technology as opposed to the human tools that make it art. If you want to be a DJ, learn the job. Just because you are a performer, doesn’t mean you’re qualified to just have a crack because it might make you look cool. The whole concept of “outsourcing” is everything that is wrong with this industry now, and considering it was for a 50 minute set is even more cringeworthy. She the. Blamed the people who put together her playlist, and she obviously did not test stuff out, which for a festival of this size means she should be forever blacklisted. She could’ve hired an actual dj to play the tunes while she sang or whatever, but nup, had to try to look cool, because Djing is “cool” right now. No excuses, this exemplifies all that is wrong in dance music at the moment, and I just hope this is the beginning of the end for this “influencer DJ” reign of terror that’s been going on for the last 15 years. Walk before you can run.

99.9% of so called DJs have their set prerecorded on a computer and push one button. go. The only person you can call a DJ are those who bring vinyl and scratch live. These guys/gals do it cuz they have talent. Anyone can use software to mix music. 😂

I disagree completely. I think her whole time as a "Musician" has been outsourced. She had very limited skill if any and has a team to make her look like she has a musical bone but really people produce songs for her. Then she is just a fashion manikin on stage. If she had any skill as a DJ and couldn't beat match herself she could have done bass EQ fades and still mixed in the next track but she couldn't even do that she slammed the track with reverb then talked for 3 mins and then tried loading another track
