Dreamworks did it better. Grimmel is devious, sadistic, manipulative, vile, torturous, intelligent and Cold-hearted antagonist. He serves perfect as a Hiccup's ultimate foe, while being both a great menace and also funny at the same time. Plus it's scary how he posthumously wins at the end, by making the dragons and vikings uproot.

Grimmel is obviously not a dangerous menace as Syndrome, but he was still a big menace due to him actually tormenting Hiccup for his losses, and making him feel insecure about Toothless’ self-discovery. He won a reputation as a hero for slaying dragons, which made it difficult for dragons and humans to live together on the surface

Ngl I still think it would've been way better if they showed him actually killing some night furies instead of saying he did. Or at the very least, show that he had a trophy room of night fury bones and skulls. They've shown dragon skulls used as trophies before. I know its a kids movie, but if youre gonna give your finale villain that evil backstory might as well go the full mile and show examples of it to really cement how terrifying this guy is. Especially since he's supposed to represent what Hiccup would've became if he killed Toothless in the forest.

Like imagine a scene that starts off like the first movie with young Grimmel in his village, making a contraption or hatching a plan or whatever to trap a Night Fury and he does. Then he finds the Night Fury, and for extra evil points let's throw in that it was protecting it's sick mate and/or a nest of hatchlings. It shows sympathy in Grimmel's eyes like what Hiccup did when he was about to stab the knife into a trapped helpless Toothless. Then, like Hiccup, Grimmel stops. He holds his face, seemingly about to let them go but still sinks the knife into it anyway. It shows his face of sympathy turning into sadistic enjoyment of his first kill, then he stares at the sick mate/hatchlings shaking in fear. Cut to him being celebrated as a hero with the corpses of the night fury/furies as the centerpiece of the party. Grimmel is surrounded by people praising him, mirroring the end of the first movie with Hiccup, then with a grin on his face vows to hunt down all the night furies.

Maybe make it the opening scene for the movie as a whole, then cut to him standing on some high place above his armada, just chilling and eating an apple or something, then the Warlords come in and one says "Hey, you, Night Fury slayer!" "I believe it's a title of the past by now, but what might bring you all the way here?" "We might have a job for you." Then there's a cut to Riders freeing dragons scene

I used to think that Grimmel was relatively boring when it came to Dreamworks villains, as it felt like he didn't do all that much to stand out other than be intimidating and scary, something many other villains have done better. Then I realized what he was a representation of narratively. All his weaponry, traps, plans, methods, they're eerily similar to Hiccup's in more ways than one. They were both outcasts of their respective community, yet incredibly crafty tacticians who make up for their physical inadequacy by being extremely shrewd and resourceful. They both make use of everything they have at their disposal to achieve their end goal. The only difference is that when given the opportunity, Grimmel killed that Night Fury and let the act shape him into a merciless trophy hunter while Hiccup's compassion was strengthened and reinforced by his show of mercy. The genius of Grimmel isn't in his presentation, it's instead the fact he's the kind of threat posed by what would happen if Hiccup didn't care.

It's great when you can write a character that can exist in a vacuum, but every character ultimately serves a narrative purpose. It is in the execution of that purpose that they should be judged. Never been a big fan of the HtTYD series overall, but pieces like Grimmel are what keep me coming back.

Grimmel is even weaker as a villan when you compare him to Vigo from the "Race to the edge" series on Netflix, a character that actively adapts to Hiccups strategies and even improves some of Hiccups designs.

I really love the idea Rubius couldn't handle a bow (which he still managed to hit a bull's-eye) in Brave, so he decided to take advantage of that weakness by creating a built-in crossbow to take down his opponents over the years in HTTYD. I can see that happening as well
