I remember my first time on a multiplayer server (GS Open Conflict). Took of with in a F-14, AWACS was constantly talking. Jester identified some targets and with the press of a button (not a green one) the first AIM-54 left the rail. TWS mode, more targets confirmed hostile on the TID. More AIM-54s launched. Two targets hit, two missiles went to space. Got shot down. 2:1 KR, not too bad. Next start: beautiful silence, data link did not show any targets. Apparently AWACS was down. Later I reviewed the tacview file. My first Aim-54 killed our AWACS and the other hit a friendly SU-25. Thought I would be banned for lifetime.

Red Storm Rising is a PvP base capture map with CSAR, and unit creation with Slinging and CTLD. The campaigns go until one side captures the whole map. J-11s and Su33s have SD10s too! Only banned weapon is the Nuke. Community is super friendly and all opinions and suggestions are encouraged on the discord, with many ideas being implemented after proposed by the community.

I said in GS that the effective range against a maneuvering target at sea level was 8 miles for an amraam. He told me "Shut up, I fly in SATAL squadron and I know better." He was a phoenix spamming f14 pilot with 0% hit rate.

@Patrick Doolittle DCS amraam or real amraam? Also, which type? I can only speak for DCS amraams, which have a less optimistic effective range against maneuvering targets at sea level. Effective range for missiles in DCS isn't set in stone, depends on several fundamental variables (leaving countermeasures aside): - DeltaV of the missile - Drag coefficient of the missile - Altitude of the attacker - Altitude of the target - Speed of the attacker - Speed of the target - Aspect of the attacker - Aspect of the target - Defensive maneuvers of the target - Ability of the attacker to keep a lock on the target (until the missile goes pitbull, if it's a fox3, or all the way, if it's a fox1) At sea level, when engaging a cold bandit going supersonic, I wouldn't fire amraams beyond 4nm (B type) or 5nm (C type), since there's simply too much drag down there for amraams to catch up (I've had to get within 3nm for amraams to catch up, in some cases). If the bandit is flanking instead of cold, you can increase the range by 1-2 nm, but that's it (since the bandit can quickly turn cold, reverting to the situation described above). If the bandit is hot, range can be increased a bit more, by 2-3 nm, nothing crazy, since we're still talking sea level here. All this is assuming both you and the bandit are going supersonic, ofc. Obviously, effective range increases when both the attacker and the target are flying at higher altitudes, where there's much less drag. Some people have a simple rule of dividing their altitude in feet by 1000 (aka angels), and use that as the effective range in nm, which isn't great but isn't terrible either.

@@hardcard254 I'd say it's not as much about "feeling safe" as it is about not wanting to deal with all kinds of people. In my opinion it's best to start with people you know and trust, either in a LAN environment or a closed Internet server one.

Hard Card I play some other multiplayer games, and have played fighting games competitively. I’m not afraid of losing or mingling with people. It’s a couple simple things really. 1) kids are asleep when I play so voice comms can wake them up and they already are like their parent in that they aren’t good sleepers 2) even in the evening I need to pause to speak with wife or do something. Just small stuff. I need to install that radio software but other than that I’ll hop on eventually. My very first online match was last year when I competed in the folds of honor tournament :)

How do you get such high FPS? If FPS usually higher on multiplayer servers? I haven’t tried a multiple player server yet, but in DCS single player I’m usually around 45 to 65 FPS. I’m running a Intel 10900K, 64 GB 3600 RAM, NVME SSD’s, and a hybrid water-cooled EVGA RTX 2080ti FTW3, which is one of the best previous-gen GPU’s.

You brought up about how most of these servers run off the beta build. For those looking to get into the multiplayer like myself, do most players use the beta build or the stable build of DCS? I’m on the stable build at present, was going to switch because of the latest campaigns, but discovered the logbook doesn’t carry over.

Most servers run on the Openbeta because it has the most content. If you play multiplayer, play on openbeta

@@AnErrantArcher logbook.lua (which should contain all your logbook info) is saved in the DCS Saved Games folder. You'll find it in C:\Users\YourUsername\Saved Games\DCS\MissionEditor Try overwriting the default logbook.lua from the Openbeta build, see if that works.

The random air spawns in a lot of servers, especially 4YA, are annoying AF when you're trying to learn/practice things, if you make a training server, just some advice, zone it, have areas for Air to Air, have areas for air to ground, and have areas for mixed, if it's a "campaign" style server, don't call it a "practice" server. If you're going to run a "campaign" style server, don't do air spawns unless they're flying in from "outside" the map, if there's an airbase right there, and it's on their coalition, have them take off, not suddenly pop up a 25kft as if by magic, it ruins it, there's no way a Su-27 is sneaking in past every sensor looking at the area at that altitude only 20 miles away from AWACs for example, that'd never ever happen.

I feel like I've been blocked on the SAR server. I can't see it, while other people tell me it's there. Happens a lot now. I think someone is behind it, not the server itself. Some stupid people started trouble there with me, and I dealt with them. Now I feel they are behind this. I couldn't see it. I got updated. Still couldn't. Then one day it's there. Monday. The Tues gone until today. I get in. I leave. And now before update I could not see it. And now after an update I still cannot see it. Someone's behind it.

We've had members have the same issue... turned out his ISP was rate limiting international traffic. By VPNing through my firewall on my connection that is not rate limited, he could drop 150ms off his ping, and not get kicked or time out due to big ping.

So I square off against a mig31 in an F16. BVR fight in the 4YA server. I sent two aamrams at him and they didn’t hit him. He sent a missle so I went cold and started running. My bags were dropped so he had little chance of catching me. Then all of a sudden I mysteriously lost afterburners. I had my jammer on flood mode. He gets me on his radar and kills me. Total BS. No doubt it was a moderator that couldn’t take a stalemate and cheated. Not that they care apparently. No 4YA for me anymore.

Start with PvE servers, it's nothing complicated. Briefing + F10 map will give you everything. You will just play with smarter allies.. well, most of them :) Servers like @11:16

Try out a PvE (players vs bots) training server! Plenty of great ones out there, and usually lots of people willing to help out if they can.

@CH Drone Photography If you've only done SP during the 2 years you've been playing DCS, you'll probably get your ass kicked in PVP, make no mistake. You'll find that experienced DCS players are far superior to the "ace" AI you're probably accustomed to. In order to get good at DCS you need lots of PVP experience, there's no way around it. Also remember that there's no shame in getting your ass handed to you (over and over), it's a fundamental part of the learning process. Contrary to what the people above have said, I'd ignore PVE servers, since that's almost the same as playing SP. I'd go directly for PVP servers, starting with simple, noob-friendly ones, like Growling Sidewinder Open Conflict. Once you become competent enough to survive and get kills in these servers and feel like moving to the next level, then you can try your luck in grown-up PVP campaign servers like the BuddySpike BlueFlag ones (be prepared for a pretty hardcore experience).

I figured a baptism by fire would be the best way to do it. Just havent made that leap yet. I dont know what it is, because Im not shy in person at all, but Im shy with the more hardcore online games.

@@stratochief99 why don't you give the PVE a try then, it's a few clicks, or even just a training server or areobatic free flight server, just to see what it's like... The thing I find with PvP, it's so hard to get a good game. The vast majority of people in DCS will join a server, see there's 6 v 5, and they will make it 7 v 5, right up until 20v5, and the only way it changes is the server resets, or a group of buddies swap teams as a group... The said the rare occasions where you get a good couple hours of reasonably balanced action with 20-30 a side is really good fun. It's always the same few people who get all the kills, and it's always rewarding when you kill one of them... It's a game within a game, the pros will know this, even if they pretend not to!

Not sure why but I have terrible FPS on Hoggit (that only uses one half of each map) vs comparable servers that use the entire map. Also, the devs refuse to listen to feedback such as chinese ship damage model being broken, requesting them to at least replace them with Russian ones. The ships also continuously respawn at Khasab every server reset.

As for the Vietnam server, assuming it's the A-4 one, the owner doesn't seem to know the Vietnam war too well. There was a red side at one point me and some others enjoyed a lot, then he removed it because he couldn't be bothered to maintain it, and even then he left brackets in the named slots like (MiG-19 because MiG-17 isn't available), not believing the -19 was in 'Nam. Slowly kept removing weapon options. I'll wait for 4YA to finish the CW server they're developing.

@@hardcard254 it's not "hard core". They even ban weapons because they don't know how to evade them. Unless you mean playing red, because playing 4 to 1 odds with the Blue stack is pretty hardcore. Especially when they ban your fellow red players every time someone mentions it. Sorry. I gave it a chance for many years. I'm not sure what years Kyle was playing but sounds like he was Blue because the bias is real, and the admins rule with emotions, not facts. Then you have Drex show up after a year and try to say it's because he "is so good" that the server still exists. Again, nope. Egotistical schizophrenic is not an ideal person at the helm. There are other servers run by the community, with active development. Much better experience without all the tribalism.
