Dude, You gotta drive that thing like a submarine in that situation. The window was not helping you. Fly on instruments. Use dead reckoning for getting there. You have a navigator acting as the bridge quartermaster. Give headings and speed changes. Repeat ships status reports regularly for the watch team so they can give vocal back up. Give rudder changes and ‘steady on’ headings. I promise this game’s map feature is already letting you cheat. Trust your instruments because they are way more reliable than your eyes on a night mission.

Comparing this to the trench run in star wars is actually spot on. To edit the movie while waiting for FX and models shots Lucas used bit and parts of "The Dambusters" movie and used it as a canvas for his death star trench run. One clu and easter eggs of that left in the movie is in that bit of dialogue copied word for word from "The Dambusters" : "- How many guns? - I don't know, some in the fields, some on the towers." Refering to the two towers on the dam in one movie, and to the turbolasers towers in SW. (had to pinch myself when i finally got the chance to watch the Dambusters). Also "633 squadron", an other war film, has a "fjord run" to hit a special target with mosquitoes facing a lot of flak similar to the dambusters and SW.
@whousley2 жыл бұрын
I remember on Dam Busters how one of the bouncy bombs bounced over the top of the dam and detonated on the ground behind. On the SW trench run one of their bombs hit near the entrance to the exhaust port.

Watching that shows more than ever the bravery & skill of the crews who flew these missions. Is there not a way to get a full moon for this raid? I’m sure they flew in a full moon specifically for this raid. They were flying up firebreaks in the forests so they must’ve been able to see the ground & trees.
@Power52 жыл бұрын
Correct. The moon was almost full on May 16th 1943 so that should have helped visibility a great deal. And the weather was "good", whatever that means in WW2 air attack strategy. Also, seeing with human eyes at night would be a whole lot easier than DCS has ever been able to replicate. Could also be the compression of YT making it worse.

This would be an absolute meal for F-111C/G's That would be a cool reenactment. On another, related note, my neighbour when I was a kid was one of the Dambusters. Led my Uncle to become a fighter pilot who flew F-86's, Mirage 3 and then retired after bringing the F/A18 into service in the RAAF. My other brother flew F-111's until he died in a training incident in Armidale. I always wanted to be a fighter pilot but, not smart enough. Ended up as a shooter in Australian SF.

I don’t think This mission can really be appreciated in mosquitos. There was no power assisted Flight instruments on the Lancaster. Fighting a 17 ton bomber with 10 tons of explosives at 100ft in the dark…for 2 and a half hours. Is just not the same as flying a 6 ton bomber that was designed for low altitude ops. Dam busters were hard bastards.

Cap : Terrified already. How on Earth did they do this? Well, they did have about two months of low-level and night-flying training, plus a couple of weeks on a simulated dam attack. But they also had to be more accurate on releasing their Upkeep mine. If memory serves, the mine had to be released at 240 mph, at exactly 60 feet above the water, and at a specific distance from the target dam (I don't remember what this distance was, but I think it was in the vicinity of 200 - 300 yards).

There was runway side lighting you know and it can be turned on and off LOL. In real life many lightly trafficked country airports have pilot activated runway lighting. What you do to turn it on is tune the local frequency for the airport and when about 3 miles away click the radio push to talk button 3x and it turns on. It auto turns off after about half an hour or something.

In the actual raid, two Lancs hit electricity pylons. One hit the sea, losing its Upkeep, but continued flying and was able to RTB. One Lanc was shot down by flak over the Dutch coast.
@nigeldepledge37902 жыл бұрын
Another Lanc or two got shot down before reaching the targets. And at least another two Lancs were lost during the actual attacks. One, at the Möhne dam, mistimed the release of the Upkeep, and the mine detonated at the top of the dam, damaging the Lanc that had dropped it.
@nickjoy88682 жыл бұрын
@@nigeldepledge3790 I believe it was John Hopgood in M Mother who released too early as his bomb aimer was hit by flak on the bomb run, the bomb exploded on the power station past the dam and blew up setting the Lanc alight, could be wrong but one of the 3 crash survivors came from this aircraft as Hoppy pulled her up as hard as he could to give his crew at least a minimal chance of bailing out.
