The stovebolt six had cast iron pistons right up to the mid 50s and from 53 they used a full pressure oiling system and discontinued with the oil scoops on the rod caps and toyota bought the rights to the patent of this motor by early 50s and used in the landcruser and some trucks in the 60s and 70s.

Did you consider powder welding the cracks? We used the ceramic sealer for years when we IMCA dirt raced and built claimer engines. There was a many of those claimer engines that ended up in pickups and made many of mile without water loss issues. We didn't buy top quality blocks to sell at the claimer races. JB weld and Ceramic coat was good to us for years on keeping our hobby cost much lower. How many 882 chevy V8 cylinder heads have you seen that are not cracked?

@pneumatic005 жыл бұрын
You're working on this now today, so I can not doubt you, but the 216 I rebuilt out of my '53 Chevy truck had babbit bearings rods? On one hand, I sure don't remember it that way but it was in 1974, 45 years ago. On the other hand, I don't recall renewing any babbit---and maybe that was why the thing blew up after about 10K miles!

@@wilburfinnigan2142 Aha about the convert-to insert rods. Yeah, it was so long ago, I barely understood what I was doing; I was lucky enough to be able to use a pal's shop and I certainly overstayed my welcome. I believe the early 235's *also* had the scooper oil deals. But as I said, it's been a while. It was when I was done that I learned the diffs between a 216 and 235. @Hagerty5 жыл бұрын
It wasn't severely cracked. As far as we could tell, the cracks were mostly superficial. None of them went through to the water jacket. It pressure tested just fine. We took the steps to mitigate any further cracking and damage. Simple as that. Like Davin mentioned, this engine won't see a ton of miles. It's a unique engine that doesn't get rebuilt very often, so we thought it would be an interesting project.
@cwiggy345 жыл бұрын

@Hagerty5 жыл бұрын
@@cwiggy34 You're right. It could pose problems in the future. But we had to look at the situation logically. We knew we wanted to rebuild this engine. There are no aftermarket heads available, and like Davin said, all the originals are cracked. The combo of it having a low compression ratio and most likely not seeing a lot of use over the next 5 to 10 years is the reason we proceeded how we did. Thanks for watching and commenting!
