took your advice and got a wolverine jig ... completely transforms the grinder !! I thought it was going to be hard to get a straight bevel using just the tool rest and no "jig" to keep it exactly 90 degrees but it was actually really easy !!! .. I used a white aluminum oxide wheel and got the crooked bevel Dead square first try ... then gave it a few strokes on the shapton glass 1k and 16k and the iron was ready for the barber to shave hair !!! :)

Thanks for the guidelines, i gave the bench grinder a shot when I first got my chisels and burnt right through a side point, never went back for more until I watched this video an hour ago. Patience is a virtue, taking off tiny bits and making sure the metal is quenched as soon as heat is felt, I now have perfectly hollow ground primaries.

Hey Rob, so let's say I follow this guide and then go to hone. Could I still use my diamond plates at 180, 400, and 1200 grit? And if so do I the honing at 25 degrees or a different angle?

How do you double check that the main bevel is a true 25 degree...I thought you were about to show it with the protector but blew past it..lol.. That's what I was looking for..iam completely brain farting on that part. I've got some old planes I need to set new 25 degrees on.. Thanks for all you do for us and us vets..

First don’t sweat exactly 25 degrees +/- a degree or two. Just look at the protractor in the measuring section of robsosman.com and you will instantly see how to measure. You could even trace the profile on some paper and

You made a cardinal mistake, wiping the rest with a shop towel while the wheel is running?

I'm not sure if I'm buying the "heat sink" hypothesis. We're dealing with a razor thin edge that is about a 1/2" from the heat sink. I think the coarse wheel and light touch is surely legit. The chisel he has is much thicker than the plane blade, wouldn't that be a better heat sink?

Dont buy the hypothesis, buy the wheel and see for yourself.

You will need some form or a jig to hold the angle, long and slow process by hand!

@jadan duffin. There are special jigs for sharpening knives with different grinding stones (or diamonds?)..... They are very expensive.....

Unlikely I will get an answer but I am looking at a good bench grinder for woodturning chisels. I have the Delta grinder but it is a high speed wheel and most people are saying a slow speed grinder is needed. I have looked at Tormek but very expensive and not sure the extra money equates to better and easier sharpening.

Hello Rob so that set a hollow grind? I prefer hollow ... makes using the stones much faster
@carlantaya175

Just use a smaller size wheel. If you keep the plane square to the rest it will become a hollow grind because of the radius of the wheel.

Patrick Melchior to save buying and trying to fit a smaller stone, use the corner of the stone which will rapidly hollow grind.
