Leica M11 EVF - VisoFlex 2. How does it compare to Leica EVF2 for M240 and Nikon Z6 EVF?

Very good test - the bit of blurriness with the Leica EVFs simply was a bit of a focusing issue with the DSLR and macro lens on the external EVF back screens. Good to see the difference in pixel size as expected. In regard to optical performance the M11 EVF is obviously as good as the one from the Z6. A bit too bulky for a smaller sized camera like the M11 but this is only my subjective preference.

I use the visoflex for macro, with an 8 or 10mm extension "tube". The wider the lens the close you can get. My oldish (year1999) summicron 50mm gives particularly superb results.

An evf on an M is wonderful for wide angle... summilux 24 and super elmar 21 and eases the diffictask , for me, of focusing a noctilux f1 and summilux 75.

I still rarely use the EVF. My fault. Rangefinder is my first choice and then sometimes I use the back screen. I will have to make a video where I only use the EVF and see what impact it has on my photography. At this stage, I have no preference of the VisoFlex 2 over the EVF2 on the M10R (M10M).

Great vics . I've a question , does the Live View Image Stabilization feature available on the Visoflex 2 ?

Yes, to activate the Live View Image Stabilisation feature, you turn on this within the menu system. It is called EVF Extension. When this is turned on, only the EVF works in live view, not the back screen. When EVF Extension is turned off, the back screen Live View works and when display is set to Auto in the menu, Live View flips automatically to the EVF when you put your eye to the EVF.

Thanks for your review. I just bought the Visoflex 2 for my M11. Would you please illustrate the procedure on how to adjust the diopter so to match the rangefinder perfect focus?

I wear glasses, so I adjusted the diopter while looking into the EVF until I got a clear image of the EVF screen. There are no marks on the diopter so its just a matter of adjusting it to your sight.

I have a question. In typ020, information about the camera appears, but strangely, Visoflex ii does not appear in the video, but I wonder if this is not displayed or not.

I don't have and did not test the type 020 EVF. So any info in the video ht type 020 is from Leica's fact sheets.

the best evf is the one found on sl2/s, beating those on Z9 and R3.

Think it will be interesting to see how you get on with the visoflex during normal type use. For example, having more/better viewfinder information available in the visoflex vs the rangefinder view. As a relatively new Leica shooter coming from, and using cameras such as Sony A7R3/S3 & Fuji GFX 50r, the criticism I have of the Leica OVF rangefinder experience, is primarily the information that’s conveyed in the OVF.

I like using the range finder. Its the closest to shooting old school film etc. Once you get used to using the rangefinder, its quick and accurate to use.

@@Adventure8 I see that the rangefinder can have some advantages over other forms of viewfinder. The 'issue' I have is the data given in the rangefinder view, not the rangefinder itself

New Visoflex seems better than the M10 Visoflex, which was an afterthought borrowed from the Leica TL and covers the shutter speed dial. But it did have a GPS (which takes 10 minutes to find a signal).

Can you set the M11 goes to into zoom mode automatically as you start focusing when using Visoflex 2 like with the M240 or you do have to push the button to zoom in?

M11 is like the M240, the Auto Focus Assist can be be turned on and off in the menu when focusing the lens.

Currently the VisoFlex 2 will not work with the M10. Leica will be releasing a firmware update for the M10 scheduled for March 2022 which will make the EVF work with the M10.

Thanks Peter for the great and detailed review! I don't think anyone will do it better. I have been in the throes of choosing an external viewfinder since I bought the 21mm lens. Electronic or optical. Optical looks better and more harmonious, but on the other hand electronic helps to break lines and frame clearly, and so rarely can be applied to other lenses, but it looks so bad on this body... I like using just the rangefinder and don't like the extra construction. What is your advice?

My preference for focus is also rangefinder, then live view back screen, then guess the distance, then the optional EVF. So, right now, the EVF is in 4th (last position) for preferred focusing method. Nevertheless, I will continue experimenting to find a unique situation. Possibly for studio work???? Totally agree about the focus preference. This is the reason I still haven't bought an external viewfinder for my 21mm. I was waiting for the visoflex2 to show up, but frankly I was disappointed with its design and size. It might have looked neutral on the M10M, but on a body with black paint it would have been a stranger...

Over many years of buying cameras, in most cases I tend to keep the camera. Often going back to use older cameras and often being surprised by their unique features and how wonderful they are. So, the M11 is different to the M10R. Once I have used the M11 more I will do a video comparing both M11 and M10R and any unique use cases for both.
