An interesting game in that Topalov put up incredible resistance finding great moves and Grischuk just kept on assaulting. Really instructive from both an attacking and defending perspective.

I agree, I'm not sure who to be more impressed with. I suppose it has to be Grischuck--who I love anyway--but Topalov was just fantastic in that loss. It was a game that took two to make a brilliancy, really.

This is a great summary coverage of a fascinating maneuvering game! I just want to point out though that Topalov is not a former World Champion. He has though played in a World Championship match, against then-reigning World Champion Kramnik (who won the title from the great Kasparov, holding it from 2000 to 2007) in 2006, which Topalov lost. It was Anand who next won the World Champion title the very next year by defeating Kramnik, and then in 2013 current World Champion Magnus Carlsen defeated Anand. Topalov was an immensely strong player who plays very exciting games, but I don't think at his age he'll ever become World Champion at this point. His chance was in 2006, and he was even given a free win by a Kramnik forfeit (!), but still Kramnik defeated him.

What strikes me about this game is the number of retreats and re-maneuvers by Grischuk. As opposed to a fatal combination that decapitates him, it's like Grischuk poked him to death.

I think it is worth mentioning that 2 knights need support points to be effective. Otherwise they are loose pieces or they end up defending each other and become paralyzed. (Kinda the opposite concept to overprotection). With the paralyzed knights you keep getting into positions where you have to push a pawn. Eventually you run out of pawn pushes and have an exposed king and must lose material or be checkmated. Once you realize this strategy, playing positions like this against 2 knights does not require a lot of thought but just takes a lot of moves to realize. The same can happen when you are down the exchange a knight for a rook, which has come up in several of my games.

Topalov hung in there quite well for quite some time. He avoided lots of traps and played the best possible defensive moves the majority of the time. Unfortunately for him, Grischuk was more precise and never stopped pushing the advantage.

9:10 what happens if black walks more of their pawns forward after h5 kicking the Queen across with each one? I mean, it might go c7 right away, but then captures captures and knight c to d7 defending the pawn... now the game is more on one side and the knigths get better, right? Haven't kept watching, but assume things don't go well in the line chosen :P

Has the “is Topalov really a former world champion” debate started already? Because I think Kramnik’s win in the Kramnik-Topalov match vindicated Kasparov’s line of champions as the legitimate one, excluding Topalov and the other (ponomariov, kasimdzhanov) from the lineage.

Topalov was NOT world champion, he was FIDE champion. Had he beaten Kramnik, then sure, but I don't understand how the FIDE champions, who essentially won a tournament, are listed as world champions when Kasparov and then Kramnik held the linear title.
