When Halsey talks about men in this song, she doesn't (only) mean ex boyfriends. They're talking about men in general, the way journalists and people in her life act like they have any say in the way she lives her life. The "They talk shit, but I love it everytime" is mostly about rumors about her, though. This song is about Halsey coming to terms with the fact that she's allowed to feel angry at how she's been mistreated. For example, the line "I've pinched my skin in between my two fingers, and wished I could cut some parts off with some scissors" is obviously about beauty standars and they way that they, being raised their whole life as a woman, have had to deal with these expectations. "Come on, little lady, give us a smile" / "No, I ain't got nothin' to smile about" refers to how women are usually told to smile even when they feel uncomfortable, we must be good, kind and be silent, even if we're being harrased or we're in abusive situations. Whatever we do, women are "hysterical" and we're "always overreacting". You should listen to Halsey's poem "a story like mine" to understand better the context of this song and the things she talks about here. I respect her so much for being brave enough to talk about these things openly. TW// sexual abuse kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYaZnoGOdqudbLs

“I gotta recognize the weapon in my mind” and she said “someone like me can be a real nightmare completely aware, but I’d rather be a real nightmare than die unaware” so she did indeed say nightmare in the song.

Oh, and she does say "nightmare" in the bridge! "Someone like me can be a real nightmare completely aware of it...."

I think the fact she doesn't actually say the word nightMARE in the chorus but made you keep waiting for it is a proof of the good writing of this song. It feels needed at the end of that sentence by the melody, an its the opposite of dream, but she is saying-get out of your illusions about me and about women, this is reality. What you'd have with me is a hell of a night. Not a nightmare. Not a drean either. I'm amazingly powerful and I'm real and you could love it or you could hate but I don't give a damn. She does say nightmare in the c part :)

the lyrics are: "i keep a record of the wreckage in my life i gotta recognize the weapon in my mind they talk shit, but i love it every time" i interpret that more like, her mind says a lot of mean things (taking the pattern you saw in their last 2 mvs) most probably about themselves. and because halsey is a writer, she recognizes their mind as a weapon that she can use to write with or about. i take it as a meta way they talk about being a writer
@Orion_TheyThem2 жыл бұрын
You need to look up the lyrics. She says, "I'm no sweet dream but I'm a hell of a knife." And "I keep a record of the wreckage in my life, I need to recognize the weapon in my mind."

The intro to this MV is inspired by the character selection menu in GTA. It’s her version of the choose you character concept. The sound used is also either identical or almost identical to the sound when you select your character.

"No I won't smile but I'll show you my teeth, and Imma let you speak if you just let me breathe, I've been polite but won't be caught dead, Letting a man tell me what I can do in my bed." I can't count the number of times of scream-singed this with friends at karaoke.

This dropped right as woman’s reproductive rights came under attack again in the US and this song fits in our fight for control over our bodies, everyone asked Halsey if that was on purpose and Halsey said something like we are always under attack, something is always happening where we have to fight basically.

My favourite line in the song is "and imma let you speak if you just let me breathe". It shows how for men these arguments about feminism and womanhood are intellectual conversations and debates, but for women it's literally about life and death. She's saying "fine, I'm going to let you have these pointless 'devil's advocate' discussions with me if it keeps you from hurting me physically.
