The Grizzl-E Smart is the smart-charging version of the very popular Grizzl-E CVlassic which we reviewed a few months ago. It's a 40-amp smart-charger for electric vehicles from Canada-based United Chargers that is built to survive even the most challenging weather conditions. We put it through our tests and offer our thoughts on this reasonably-priced EV smart-charging option.

THANK YOU TOM! One year after producing this video and I still rate this one as the best bang for the buck. This is a solid unit, even the plates that hold it in place to the wall are made from metal and not cheap @ss plastic. I ordered mine yesterday, I'll be setting it at 32amp(personal 'safety' choice) when I get it installed in a few weeks.

Tom's EV reports are some of the best you'll find on YT and no one analyzes charging better. I know dozens of people who live in condominiums who won't buy an EV because the association won't give away electricity. A few commercial charging units are available with direct user billing, but they are expensive and like Chargepoint take a percentage of the revenue collected. Hopefully the Grizz-E Smart charger supports multiple accounts soon because it looks like a great charger at an economical price. Enel-X is another brand that's high quality per Tom's review and may be supporting multiple accounts / direct billing.

Hey man, I just want to say that I really appreciate the dives that you do on each of these chargers. Your website is also super helpful as well. It seems like there are a lot of features for this charger that were still in development at the time of this video. Do you think you'd be able to do a shorter, follow-up video and see how well those features work or if they are still non-existent?

Tom, I enjoy your charger reviews as they are comprehensive and objective. Two questions for you, please: 1. Do I need a smart charger if the car can control charging start time, minimum and maximum charge levels, etc,? 2. Have you ever run into a situation where the smart charger conflicts with what has been programmed into the car? What happens then?
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

Hi Patrick. No, you don't "need" a smart charging station. Most EVs today can perform the tasks that you mentioned, without the need of a smart charging station. However, there are plenty of other features that are good smart home charging station can offer that the EV cannot do. Schedules can conflict between the vehicle and the EVSE if you set them that way. In that case the vehicle won't charge unless both the schedule that's set for the charging station and in the car both agree it's time to charge.

I would love to see a review of the Shell Recharge 32 or 40 amp portable EVSEs. I own the 32a version, but I haven’t seen a lot of reviews, and most people I talk to have never seen one. It is one of the few portable (or mounted, for that matter) EVSEs that not only has adjustable amperage (12, 16, 24, or 32), but also works on 120v with the included adapter. It also has a small, but informative display, including incoming voltage and total kWh delivered. So far, I am really happy with this unit. I am using it at work and will use it on trips as well.

We have had the Grizzl-e original for three years and really like it. The holster caused some concern once. Bugs got into it once and then got crushed inside the car receptacle. I saw the mess and thought something awful must be happening electrically. Now we always put the rubber cover on the end. Have you ever done a video on how we do not all get electrified when we plug in during a rain storm.

About flexibility, don't mix flexible with supple. In cable engineering, a supple cable a cable that is easy to bend (with little force). A flexible cable is a cable that can be bend many times without breaking. When building a cable, you can favor one characteristics, but you loose on the other one. IE: making a supple cable will last less time (be less flexible).

I'm considering something like this for my Tesla vs just going with the Tesla wall charger. I was originally considering just doing the NEMA 14-50 outlets with the mobile charger, but really want something installed so I can keep the mobile charger in the car for when we travel, considering an extra mobile charger is nearly as expensive as a wall charger - this is a viable option. The Tesla wall charger charges faster since it can use a 60a circuit (48a used), it costs less than other smart wall chargers, and no need for an adapter. Of course the downside is that if we sell the house, a hardwired wall charger will be of little value to new owners unless they also have (or get) and EV - specifically a Tesla. Which is why I'm considering going with a non-Tesla wall charger that can plug into a standard NEMA outlet. I can take the charger with me and the outlet can provide value to the new owners for other uses. Of course, perhaps I'm over thinking this.
@rkgsd
@rkgsd Жыл бұрын
I'd consider the Emporia charger for $399 which he's also reviewed. It CAN do 48 amps (hardwired). If you're not thinking of moving anytime soon, I'd still go hardwired and enjoy the benefits of that. Cut you losses if/when it's time to move. A home buyer might find it a nice enough perk to buy the home. A $399 EV donation is easier pill to swallow than a $650 Tesla charger donation.
@JasonTaylor-po5xc
@JasonTaylor-po5xc Жыл бұрын
@@rkgsd Sure. A general purpose EV charger would be more appealing overall (slightly less to Tesla owners) although both can charge any EV with the right adapters. However, the 14-50 plug is even more useful since RVs and power tools can use it.

Avalanche (white) edition would be great for Phoenix to help keep it cooler. I would actually want a black one for snowy areas. But I guess white would keep your winter wonderland looking pristine. @henrysamek9211

You shouldn't hardwire the weatherproof "EVSE" unit! Whether mounted on an exterior post, mounted on the exterior of the dwelling the "EVSE" unit should have a hard usage #6-3 rubber cord with a 14-50 male W.P. RV plug installed and wired into the unit! The 14-50 male plug should be plugged into a W.P. 14-50 receptacle mounted in a weatherproof box NEMA 3R that has an "In Use Cover" to cover and protect the receptacle! This way, you have a weatherproof disconnecting means where you park the all electric vehicle! If a malfunction in the vehicle should occur, not a short circuit, without going to the electric vehicle you can unplug at the point of disconnect thus stopping the current flow from the receptacle! The supply at the service panel should always be a GFCI breaker!

I'm considering this charger as well and the WiFi performance is not something any review really covers. From an engineering standpoint, the aluminum enclosure is great for sealing the electronics from the environment BUT it is also one of the best ways to shield the electronics from electromagnetic waves, including 2.4GHz WiFi. Ideally, there would some kind of plastic window in the enclosure where the WiFi module's antenna is to improve signal integrity. If your router is very close to where the charger will be then it might not be an issue, but unfortunately the only to figure that out is to buy it and test it...

Hi Tom, at my new house, the electrician has pulled the wires about 2 feet above from the ground for a NEMA 14-50 charger. Should I ask him to flip the receptacle and place the 'Ground' down? I noticed the NEMA 14-50 outlet is lower than the Grizzle-E charger, have you flipped it as well?
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

I have outlets in the garage that are both ground down and ground up, because different units use different configurations. Yes, the Grizzl-E's is ground down, so unless you want to bend the cable in a U shape, you need to switch the outlet.

First, I'd like to say thank you for this excellent review. I am thinking about buying this charger, but I have a question I hope you can answer for me. While searching for a charger, I noticed that chargers can be 24, 32, and 40 amp. Could you explain the difference? Does a 40 amp charge faster than a 24 or 32 amp. Which would you recommend?
@cfldriven
@cfldriven 2 жыл бұрын
The higher the amp rating the more energy that can be supplied to your vehicle. Just make sure the electrical breaker and wiring are rated above the amount you will be using.

After that dunk test and before applying power, I would have opened the box to see if there was any water penetration. Maybe he checked it and wanted to give us some drama. Surely water penetration could "smoke" this beautiful unit, leaving it less than avalanche-white.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Not to criticize, but we saw the rigorous hose test, then opening box to view gasket, followed by bucket dunking, then immediate power up. Maybe that wasn’t actual sequence and it’s lost in editing.

@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnpoldo8817 Yeah, I just rewatched. I thought I edited in the opening of the box after I plugged in, but I didn't. I quickly showed it while I was hosing down the unit. But I did open it up right after I hung it on the wall and plugged it in. There wasn't any moisture inside. I actually recorded and edited this about 10 days ago.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney My only concern is someone to copy these tests on another charger and fail to look inside box for moisture/water before applying power. 10kw shorted by water can easily ignite smoke/fire and safety is so important on EVSEs. Coming from someone with 15 yrs experience in test industry, I must compliment you on an outstanding job

I don't understand what the benefit of using one of these chargers is if you're just going to plug it into an outlet instead of hardwiring. Seems you might as well plug a charging cable directly into the car and let the car's software and app handle the rest.

The separate holster is probably the #1 reason I wont get this one. I really want the Grizzl-e but I am going to be mounting it outside on a brick column that isn;t very wide, and frankly more ugly than an integrated one.

I have the grizzl E smart and have been happy with its performance overall. I just noticed on the chargelab app that my ioniq 5 recorded a 100 Kwh charge. This is difficult to do since the battery is only 77 kwh. I went back through my history and saw one other session that was 74 Kwh (out of 30 charging sessions at my home). I am guessing that my Ioniq 5 protected itself by end the charging the charging session at 80%. The the grizzl-e smart charger keep trying to push power? Is that bad for the battery? Has anyone else had this issue? I don't want to pay for power I am not using?

Yes, you can. The vehicle will limit the power it takes in so you don't have to worry. You can always use a charging station that can deliver more than your EV can accept without any issues. That goes for all EVs.
