When cats start to fall at there terminal velocity tgeh spread their legs out like a parachute and land on there chest to increase the surface area that hits minimizing the damage but they can still get injured from the fall as they are still falling quire fast from a high high. Because of this a cat is more likely to survive a fall from the 10th story unharmed than the 5th story

I have 6 cats, they're both inside and outside cats, so they just roam around the woods then come back home after an hour or two. with that being said, I once watched one of my cats that prefers being outside the most, fall about 15 to 20 feet from the top of a tree and land on all fours and being perfectly fine after words.

Fun fact Grizzy, a cat reaches terminal velocity very fast and when a cat falls above the 7th floor pure instinct causes them to splay out their limbs and land belly first like a parachuter which again is aimed at reducing their speed and reducing the direct impact on their legs upon landing. So while not 100% they'd have a pretty high chance of surviving a fall from the Empire State.

They next tuck in their arms in order for them to flip if they’re belly up, then they put out their arms to both stop rotating and to slow their fall. When they get to the ground they use their feet for shock absorption, and lay down to make the landing less painful

Funny thing about cats, while they don’t always land on their feet, they’re more likely to suffer less damage depending on how high up they are. There’s been cats who jumped off of some pretty damn high buildings and barely suffered any damage. The highest recorded jump by a cat (I don’t remember exactly how high up) only ended with the cat having a punctured lung, and it was out of the hospital after two days. A lot of cats actually suffer worse injuries if they fall from lower heights because they have less time to react and adapt to the situation. So if your cat ever jumps from a 3 story building, good chances that the cat is just fine. Empire State Building is too high though lmao.

Cats land on their feet because they have a fluid in their ears that helps them understand how to land upright, this is also the cause why cats spasm in no gravity, since the fluid is floating, the cat doesn't understand what's upright. Bit late to the video, but, for context, the longer/higher cats fall in the air, the easier it is to adjust to land on their feet. It’s called the Cat Righting Reflex. There was a study that showed cats that fell from above seven stories had less injuries than cats that fell from below seven stories (including one cat that fell from an obscene height and came out without a scratch).

Cats have an inbuilt reflex that let them switch positions almost immediately while midair, coupled with the fact that they’re really light and have strong legs helps them basically land on their feet and walk away (relatively) unharmed. From a higher fall (eg. A tall tree) they have extra skin around their legs that when they spread out add a little drag resistance to their fall, so they don’t injure themselves from those falls either. A cat **could** survive and land on their feet from falling off the Empire State Building, it really depends on how much drag resistance it can create (say, how fluffy it is and how much surface area it adds to itself when falling and spreading out it’s limbs)

As to answer your cat question, more often then not, yes they do land on their feet. They have an inbuilt reflex system that makes them orientate themselves very quickly, obviously there are some cases where they can't do it fast enough or just won't survive the fall, like your example with the empire state building. But in most cases, cats will reflexively land on their feet.
