Hollywood had to fit in a fictitous angle that the americans cared about the welfare of indians just so that the american version of history made them look compassionate. All the indians wanted was a bit of land and to be left alone but because gold was discovered, it led to their destruction. The real truth is that US military acted like Nazi's even before the word was invented. Custer's sole mission was to ride into the Indian village and kill all the women and children.

The news of Custer's whole command being wiped out - *and reports that his body had been mutilated* - sent the country into a rage and public opinion forced leaders in Washington to send whole armies to the west to crush the American Indians!
